DRIVING MECHANISM.
Specication of Letters Patent.

Application filed November 17, 1916. Serial No. 131,848.
To all whom t may concern.
Be it known that I, JAY M. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Driving Mechanism; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved construction and assembly of driving mechanisms particularly adapted foi` use on talking machines, whereby a silent and vibrationless drive may be imparted through suitable gearing to the record carrying,` disk of the machine on which a record is placed to be played.
It is an object therefore of this invention to construct a driving mechanism wherein a motor is pivotally and adjustably mounted, and is provided with a yieldable friction driving wheel in contact with a friction wheel on a jack shaft provided with centrifugal governing mechanism, whereby the speed of the jack shaft may be controlled independently of the motor.
It is also an object of this inventiony to construct a driving mechanism wherein a governor controlled jack shaft is frictionally driven by a motor, and with manually adjustable means for regulating the governing effect of the governor on said jack shaft, so that the speed of operation thereof may be regulated as desired.
It is furthermore an important object of this invention toconstruct an improved construction and arrangement of parts of a driving mechanism wherein a suitably mounted motor adjustable into different positions serves to drive a jack shaft through a yieldable friction driving wheel, and with said jack shaft provided with an improved type of adjusting means for a governor mechanism thereon, whereby any desired rate of drive thereof may be obtained.
It is iinally an object of this invention to provide an improved construction and as sembly of the elements of a driving mechanism whereby a compact, simple andl eflicient mechanism is obtained, silent and vibrationless in operation, and readily adjustable for different driving speeds.
The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.

As shown in the drawings:
The reference numeral 1, indicates a horizontal partition wall or floor of a talking machine, and attached therebeneath is a frame plate 2, carrying driving mechanisms embodying the principles of myinvention. As clearly shown in Fig. 4, a pivot' stud 3, is recessed through the frame plate 2, and the lower threaded end thereof is engaged into the casing of the motor 4, so that said stud, thus supporting said motor suspended therefrom, is capable of pivotal movement during pivotal adjustments of said motor.
Secured upon the outer end of the motor casing L1, is a bearing 5, for the motor shaft, and engaged around said bearing, is the hooked end 6, of an adjusting rod or bolt 7 which extends through a depending bracket 8, from the frame plate 2, and has threaded thereon a knurled adjusting head 9, which is prevented from movement away from said depending bracket 8, by a pivoted finger 10, engaging overa flanged portion of said head. 2ecured upon the other end of the motor shaft is a yieldable rubber friction driving wheel 11, which bears against and is adapted to drive a wheel 12, secured upon a jack shaft 13, which is journaled in center bearings 14, which are adjustably mounted on depending bearing arms or brackets 15, integral with the frame late 2. The speed of drive of the jack shaft 13, is controlled by a centrifugal governor mechanism of a familiar type, comprising weights 1G, secured on spring arms 17 one end of each of which is secured to the hub of the wheel 12, and the other end of each of which is secured to the hub of a slidable friction disk 1S, which as the speed of the shaft increases, is drawn inwardly, due to the movement of the weights outwardly by centrifugal force.
A friction brake is provided to bear against the surface of said friction disk 1S, of the governor mechanism, comprising a bent rod 19, one end of which carries a brake shoe 20, for contact with the disk 1.8, said rod being journaled in bearing members 21, secured on the under surface of the frame plate 2, as clearly shown in Figs. 1, G and 7. The other end of the rod or shaft 19, is bent to form an arm adapted to track over the inclined surface of a cam segment which is horizontally rotatable. Said horizontally rotatable cam 22, is secured upon the lower end of a vertical shaft 23, which extends upwardly through the frame plate 2, and, oirits upper end is provided with an actuating handle 2l, movable over a graduated dial 25. Bolted on the under surface of the frame plate 2, is a depending semicylindrical carrying bracket 26, alfording a step bearing for a vertical shaft 27, which extends ujnvardly through the frame plate 2, and partition 1, and serves to drive a record carrying disk attached thereon (not shown). Said shaft 27. is provided with a worm wheel 2S, which is in mesh with and is driven by a worm 29, secured upon the countershaft 13. As shown in the detail view in Fig. 5, the lower end of said shaft 27, rests upon a ball 30, in the bearing bracket, and a collar 31, secured upon said shaft near the upper end thereof, bears beneath a washer 32, which is disposed beneath a boss formed on the under surface of the frame plate 2, to prevent vertical movement of said shaft 27, except by loosening of the collar 31.
As clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 6, the governor brake arm rod 19, is normally held outwardly from the friction disk 18, so that the other bent arm thereof is closely in contact with the cam 22, by a tension spring 33, attached thereto, and to a fixed point 0n the under surface of the frame plate 2.
The operation is as follows:
The vertical drive shaft 27, receives its drive from the governor controlled countershaft 13, which is in turn driven through the contact friction wheels 11 and 12. The friction wheel 11, of the driving motor 4, is of soft porous rubber, or other suitable inaterial, aording a resilient means of drive as well as one transmitting no vibrations from the motor. The bearing pressure of the yieldable friction wheel 11, upon the wheel 12, of the countershaft, may be varied by adjustment of the bolt or rod 7, attached to the bearing on the other end of the motor casing ll, said adjustment being effected by turning the knurled threaded head for the purpose, and said motor, swinging as a whole on its pivot 3, by which it is suspended from beneath the frame plate 2. Thus one form of governing means is provided dependent upon the driving friction between said friction wheels. The centrifugal governing mechanism acts automatically to control the rate of drive of the jack shaft 13, to a predetermined speed, owing to the fact that the outward movement of the weights 16, serves to draw the slidable friction disk 1S, against the brakeshoe 20, on the bent rod 19, and this shoe may be moved into different positions for different governing speeds by movement of the handle 2l, whereby the cam 22, is rotated to tilt the rod 19, different amounts, and thereby vary the position of said brake shoe.
I am aware that various details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing` from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. A driving mechanism of the class described comprising a pivoted adjustable motor, a drive wheel thereon, a countershaft, a friction wheel secured thereon and driven by the drive wheel of the motor, a hooked rod for adjusting the motor on its pivot whereby the bearing pressure between said wheels may be changed by adjustment of the motor, governing mechanism on said countershaft, and a shaft journaled transversely and adjacent to said countershaft and driven thereby.
2. A driving mechanism of the class described comprising a frame plate, a motor pivotally suspended therefrom, a motor shaft, a yieldable friction drive wheel on said motor shaft, a countershaft, a friction wheel secured thereon driven by the yieldable friction wheel of said motor, curved means engaging the motor shaft for changing the adjustment of said motor to vary the friction pressure between said respective friction wheels, governing mechanism controlling the rate of rotation of said countershaft, means adjusting said governing mechanism for different governing speeds, and
Aanother shaft driven by said countershaft.
3. A driving mechanism of the class described comprising a frame plate, a driving motor pivotally and adj ustably mounted therebeneath, a motor shaft, hooked means engaging said shaft for horizontally swinging said motor to different positions, a yieldable friction wheel on said motor, a countershaft, afriction wheel thereon contacted by said motor friction wheel with a bearing pressure dependent upon the adjustment of said motor, and a vertically disposed shaft projecting through said frame plate driven by said countershaft.
4. A driving mechanism of the. class described comprising a pivotally suspended adjustable motor, a yieldable friction wheel thereon, a countershaft, a friction Wheel secured thereon driven by said motor friction Wheel, a hook engaging the motor, a rod integral therewith for swinging the motor whereby the gearing friction between said wheels may be varied by adjustment of said motor, a worm on said countershaft, a vertical shaft disposed adjacent thereto, and a worm wheel on said vertical shaft meshing with said worm whereby the vertical shaft is driven thereby.
5. A driving mechanism comprising a counter shaft, a friction wheel thereon, a governor mechanism on said shaft, a pivotally mounted motor, a bearing at one end thereof, an adjusting rod having a hooked end engaging the bearing, means for adjusting the rod to swing the motor, and a friction wheel carried by the motor adapted to engage the friction wheel on the counter shaf G. A driving mechanism comprising a pivotally suspended motor provided with a motor shaft, a bearing on one end of the motor shaft, an adjusting rod connected with the bearing, means for adjusting the rod to swing the motor on its pivot, a friction wheel on the opposite end of the motor shaft, a counter shaft, a friction wheel thereon driven by the friction wheel on the motor shaft, an upright shaft, and a worm and worm gear connection between the upright shaft and countershaft.
7. In a driving mechanism a support, a pivot bolt depending therefrom, a motor suspended thereto, a shaft, friction members on the motor and said shaft, a governor on said shaft, a friction element on said shaft connected to the governor, a friction member for co-acting therewith for controlling the speed of the shaft, a bent lever connected with said friction member, a cam segment for adjusting the bent lever to vary the position of the friction member, and means for rotating the motor to vary the degree of friction contact between the friction members to provide an independent means for controlling the speed of the shaft.
