Description
M G FREEMAN. Improvement in Ra i lway-Rail Chair.
Patented June 4,1572.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAILWAV RAIL-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,588, dated June 4, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that, I, MOODY G. FREEMAN, of Bloomington, in the county of McLean and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad Chair; and do hereby declare that the followin g is a full, clear, and exact'description thereof, reference being had.to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
' I The nature of my invention consists in the so that it is held snugly and firmly in place.
One of the shoulders, D, is made detachable or removable, its lower edge being formed to fit intoa V-shaped groove, 00, in the body of the chair, as seen. A half-round hole is made through the rail (or each rail) at its end in such a manner that when the two rails contiguous have their ends placed together a round hole is formed to receive the bolt E, which passes through the two shoulders of the chair to confine'them to the rails. By means of this arran gement the rails are allowed to move endwise by contraction or expansion. The holes in the rails may be elongated, if desired, and the bolts be flattened at their centers to correspond. The upper edges of the shoulders, it will be, seen, are formed upon the same curve as the rail, so that they fit snugly against-it to support and strengthen it.
By this construction and formation of chair and rail the two are fitted and adapted to each other, so as to insure great strength of joints, as well as a sure and easy adjustment of the rails endwise, without fear of binding or straining the chair or the bolt.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The chair B, having the fish-piece G fitting the web and against the shoulder of the rail, in combination with the removable piece I), the lower edge of which enters the notch a: in the chair, and is bolted to the part 0 through a notch in the webs, as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto .set my hand this 5th day of July, 1871.
' MOODY Gr. FREEMAN.
Witnesses Tnos. SLADE, J. D. HARBUT.
