Be it known that I, CLAUDE W. CAMP, a citizen of the United States, residin at Petoskey, in the county of Emmet and tate of Michigan, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Sprinkling Apparams, of which the following is a. specilication. Y

Myinvention has reference to sprinkling apparatusv and more particularly to an improved sprinkler which can be readily and easily used for a novel purpose.

One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a sprinkler having associated therewith suitable raking means, Y

and a deflector element adapted to direct a spray of liquid over the material being raked. Y .f f f A further object consists in having the sprinkler so connected to the'liquid supply f source that it may be conveniently handled by the operator without danger of the liquid feed being impeded or impaired, suitable valve means being arranged within reach of the operator for cutting off or increasing the flow at will.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character particularly adapted for the purpose of moistening ashes prior to their removal from the furnace whereby they may be subsequently taken out without the dust and other inconveniences usually incident to such a task.

With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the details of construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described inthe following specification and particularly pointed out in the drawings, wherein- Figure l. is a view of my improved sprinkler in side elevation,

By particular reference to the drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be seen that I have provided a tubular member 1 to be constructed of any length suitable to the purpose forwhich the device may be employed and having a bore suficiently large to permit of a ready flow of water therethrough. One end of the tubular member 1 is bent as indicated. at 2 and Curved. t0 provide a Sulfff 'specification of 'Letters Patent.

,ablehandle 3. The terminal 4 of thev handle, as willbe noted, lies in proximity to the, bend 2 and is `joined with a flexible tube or hose 5. The tube 5 extends up into engagement with a container 6 wherein is kept a suitable supply of water. The iow of the water from the container 6 into the tube .5 is vcontrolled by a regulating valve 7 vpositioned adjacent the lower end of thevcontainer and to which the tube is directly attached. The container 6 is naturally to be supported upon a shelf or other holder 8 at a suiicient height to cause a steady flow of water through Vthe tube l5 and into the tubular :member 1 when the valve is'properly adjusted. Y

A rake element 9 `is associated with the tubular member 1 and consistsof a cross head 10 from which depends the raking prongs or teeth 11. Extending rearwardly from the cross head 10 is the shank 12 which rests upon the upper end of the tubular portion 1, which member, in fact, constitutes the handle of the device. Suitable U clamps 13 are engaged about the member 1 at the end upon e'which the shank 12 rests and are provided with plates 14 which bear against the shank of the rake, being securely held thereagainst by tightening nuts 15,. By loosening the nuts 15, the shank l2 may be adjusted longitudinally of the member 1.

It is ofcourse common experience that the handling of finely sifted ashes causes the same to permeate the atmosphere in line dustlike particles, which is injurious to the lungs when inhaled and which also renders the task of cleaning furnaces, etc., both difficult and annoying, and as my invention has in view to prevent this line dust from arising during the handling of ashes, through the spraying of liquid thereon, I provide the tubular member '1, already described, with a deflecting or sprayer plate 16. This defiecting plate has a tubular connecting shank 17 adapted to be suitably engaged with the dis charge end 18 of the member 1 so that the water may readily pass through the member against the plate 16 and be thus deiected or sprinkled upon the ashes. The deflector plate extends laterally on both sides of the member 1 and rake shank 12 so as to prevent any water from being thrown into engagement with the furnace grate while the ashes beneath the same are being raked by the member 9. The inner face of the Sprayer is @neared and @wel @Qrawedly in proximity to the discharge end of the shank 17 so that the liquid, in being thrown against the delector plate will be caused'to innnediately scatter and spray over the sub-V jacent ashes.
