Description

DAVID WEYGANDT.
\mprovement in Cor'n-Coverer.
Patented June 4,1872.
WI NESSES INVEN O UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
DAVID WEYGANDT, OF JEROMESVILLE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO SAMUEL STACHER.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-COVERERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,534, dated J une 4, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID WEYGANDT, of Jeromesville, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuble Improvement in Oorn-Goverers; and I do hereby declare that the following is at'ull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification and to the letters and figures'of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a longitudinal central section. Fig. 2 is a plan view.
This invention has relation to corncoverers, and consists in the construction and novel arrangement'of the shovels, land-roller, gaugewheel, and roller-scraper, as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, Arepresents the draft-beam, provided with the ordinary plow-handles B. 0 represents apost depending from the beam A near its forward end. D is a gauge-wheel journaled to an adjustable slotted plate, E, se-
cured to the post 0. F designates standards bolted to the sides of the handles B. G are the shovels, concave in vertical cross-section, and constructed with theirforward edges sli ghtlybeveledfromtheirupper edges totheir points, as shown. The shovels are secured to the lower ends of the standards F, and are arranged in an oblique manner, diverging from their rear to their points. The object of this arrangement is to enable the shovels to gather and throw the earth close to the corn. The beveled forward edges of the shovels allow the surplus earth to fall to the sides, thus preventing the ridges from being made too high. H represents diagonal braces, reaching from the forward part of the beam to the standards F. I represents aland-roller, journaled to the lower parts of hinged U-shapcd stirrups K. The lower ends of the latter are hinged to the standards F, and the upper ends are secured to the standards in an adjustable manner, so that the roller may be raised or loweredto suit the depth of plowing. L denotes a transverse scraper secured to the supports K in front of the roller. The roller is designed to follow the shovels and to crush all clods, so as to render the soil fine and the surface even. The scraper serves to keep the roller-surface clean.
In regulating the depth of the plowing both the gauge-wheel and the roller should be adjusted, theobject being to keep the lower edges of the cultivator-shovels horizontal, or on such inclination as the nature of the soil may re quire.
I claim as my invention-- The corn-coverer herein described, having the adjustable gauge-wheel D, the inclined shovels G, facing forward and inward, and the adjustable roller I, pivoted to the U-shaped stirrups K carrying the scraper L, all constructed and arranged substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
DAVID WEYGANDT.
