PROFILING-JIG.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAYMOND D. EMERY,
a citizen of the United States, residing at VVinchendon, county of Worcester, w and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Profiling-Jigs, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification,

The invention tobe hereinafter described relates to wood-working and othermachines,
and among other objects, provides simple and effective means for controlling the relation of the work to the tool operating thereon.
The character of the invention may be if best understood by reference to the following description of an embodiment thereof, shown in the accompanying-drawings, wherein Figure 1' is a rear perspective view showing a'portion of a wood-working machine and a work holder therefor, embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a front perspective view of the machine and holder shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3, on a reduced scale, is a vertical transverse section through parts shown in Figs. 1 and 2;and
Figs; 4 and 5 show illustrative articles which may be shaped by the machine.
Referring to the drawings: 1 designates k a portion of a standard supporting a table 3, provided with a cutter tool 5" mounted on a shaft projecting down through an opening in said table and driven by 'a pulley (not shown) and a belt 7 in the usual manner;
A guide member, in the present instance of the invention, in the form of a bar 9 is fixed by a clamp 11 or other appropriate securing means onto said table, and may have an aperture 13 therein to accommodate the cutter tool shaft. Preferably, the front edge of said bar is elevated somewhat above the table by a strip 15 beneath thesame, and
projecting out beyond the said edge topre sent a ledge for a purpose to be hereinafter described.

tool. In the present instance of the invention, this holder .is in the form of a frame which may be constructed and arranged to receive WOrk of difierent shapes and sizes, as required. The illustrative frame shown herein comprises a base plate 25 and ends 27 a secured thereto, and adapted to receive the work between them, herein in the form ofa post having square ends and a rounded reversely-curved portion between said ends. said blocks. These hooks have shanks projecting through long bores in saidblocks and on their outer ends are'threaded butterfly nuts 39. When these nuts aretightened, they will act on the hooks and draw the square ends of the stock securely against said shoulders.
-The blocks may be adjusted relatively to the ends of the frame and; be secured by bolts 11 entered through bores in said endsand elongated slots in'saidblocks. These bolts mayalso pass through cleats-43 to distribute their pressure to said'blocks and ends. To further contribute tothe positioning of the stock, feet 45 maybe provided adapted to rest'against the stock intermediate the ends of the latter. These feet may be adjustably mounted on the base plate 25 of the frame, and be secured in different positions of ad-. justment by butterfly nuts 47 on screws 49 projecting up through slots in said feet.
To determine the curve or other form to be given to the stock, the frame may be provided with suitable pattern means. In the present instance of the invention, this means is in the form of a plate 51 having an edge 53 curved to conform to the contour to,
'adjust'ably secured to said ends by bolts 61 projecting through selected holes of the series of holes in said cleats and through elongated slots 63 in said ends.
The opposed edges ofthe guide bar 9 and the frame base plate 25 may be beveled as:
I shown in Fig. 3, to facilitate the rocking of the frame relative to the tool, as more fully hereinafter described.
An elbow block 65 may be secured to one of the ends of the base plate 25 projecting beyond one of the ends 27 of the frame to limit the rocking movement thereof.
In use, the work to be shaped is clamped into the holder and then the latter is grasped and placed on the table with the rear edge of the base plate resting on the'ledge and abutting against the front edge of the guide bar. The holder is then given a rearward rocking movement to cause the curved edge of the pattern plate to engage the rounded edge ofthe guide arm. The holder is then slid along said ledge and the bar, and in the course of this movement, the holder will be automatically rocked on said ledge as a fulcrum to vary the distance of the work from the axis of the tool and thereby vary the depth of out made by the tool in the work.
The plate 51 is shown herein merely to illustrate one form of pattern which may be used. Appropriate pattern plates may be used for forming the stock with the contour shown in the article a'ppearing'in Fig. 4, or to produce the rifle stock shown in Fig. 5, or other shapes, as desired.
It will be understood that whilethe invention is described herein more particularly withreferenceto a wood workingmachine,'it is applicable to other machines for operating on othermaterials;
The invention is not limited to the specific details illustrated herein, but extensive deviations may be made therefrom without departing from the spirit and scope of the claims.
lVhat is clai1ned,is:
1. A" wood working machine, comprising in combination, a supporting table, a rotary cutter mounted above said table, a right line and rocks about said guide member, that thecutter may give the work .a form determined by the shape of said: pattern. 7
2. A wood working machine, comprising in combination, a supporting tableya rotary cutter mounted above said-table, a guide member mounted on said table, a guide element mounted on said table above said guide member, a separate work, carrier for sliding and rocking engagement with said guide member, meansto secure-the work on said carrier, a pattern having an edge for engagement with said element, and means to secure said pattern to said carrier in predetermined relation to the work, that the work may-receive a form determined by the relation of the pattern to the work.
3. A wood working machine, comprising in combination, asupporting table, a rotary cutter mounted above said table with a substantially vertical axis, a work carrier comprising a base, end members secured to said base for receiving the work between them, means to secure the work on said carrier, a' pattern secured to said end members in predetermined relation to the work and'having a longitudinal edge shaped according'to the form to be given the Work, means to guide said :base in a rectilinear direction as it is fed relatively'to said cutter, and-a fixed element to engage said pattern edge and cause said carrier base to rock on said guide as a fulcrum as the'carrier is fed relatively to the cutter.
