Each of the cranks 15 of the pair of driving wheels 9 is pinned to a side rod 26, and the cranks 1G and 17 of the driving wheels 10 and 11 are pinned to a side rod 27. The rod 25 is provided with a bifurcated end portion which its over an end portion of the motor rod 24 and is pinned thereto by a jaclrshaft pin 28. T he bifurcated end portion of the motor rod 25 also fits over the side rod 27 and is pinned thereto by a pin 29. The side rod 26 is provided witha bifurcated end portion which extends over, and is pinned to, an end portion of the motor rod 24.
Referring to Figs. 2 and 3 of the .drawing, the motor rods 24 and 25 are directly mounted on a bushin 30 which is loosely fitted to the jacloshaft pin 28 so that. the motor and side rods may have a limited free movement, relative to the jack shaft, in the plane of the rod system. However, the jack shaft 28 is provided with a washer 31 and a nut 32 for preventing any lateral vibration of the rods 24 and 25.
In describing Figs. 4 to 13, inclusive, the various elements are designated by reference characters corresponding to those used in Figs. 1 to 33, inclusive. In the modification illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, the motor rod 25 is provided with a bifurcated end portion which includes end portions of the motor rod 24 and the side rod 26. between arms thereof and is respectively pinned thereto by the jack-shaft pin 28 and a pin 33. The side rod 27 is provided with a bifurcated end portion which includes an end portion of the motor rod 24 between the arms thereof and is joined thereto by means of the pin 29.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7, the motor rod 25 is provided with a bifurcated end portion which includes end portions of the rods 24 and 27 between the arms thereof and is respectively pinned to said rods by pins 34 and 29. The side rod 26 is provided with a bifurcated end portion ,which includes an end portion of the motor 24 between the arms thereof and is pinned thereto by a pin 33. The motor rod 24 is directly joined to the crank 19 by means of the crank pin 28. In the modification illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9, the side rod 26 is provided with a bifurcated end portion which includes end portions of the motor rod 24 and the side rod 27 between the arms thereof and is pinned to the side rod 27 by the jack-shaft pin 28 and to the motor rod 24 by the pin 33. The motor rod 25 is provided with a bifurcated end portion which includes an end portion of the side rod 27 between the arms thereof and is joined thereto by the pin 29.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 10 and 11, the side rod 26 is provided with a bifurcated end portion whidh is connected to end portions of the motor rod 25 and the side rod 27, and the motor rod 24 is pro vided with a bifurcated end portion which is pinned to an end portion of the side rod 27. In this modification, the jack-sl1ait pin 28 serves as a means for connecting the side rods 26 and 27. In Figs. 12 and 13 of the drawing, the motor rod 25 is provided with a bifurcated end portion which is joined to I end portions of the two side rods 20 and 27, and the motor rod 24 is provided with :1 bifurcated end portion which. is pinned to the side rod 26. The jack-shaft pin 28 connects the motor rod 25 and the side rod 26 together and to the jack-shaft crank 15').
Although I have shown and desrribcd locomotive driving mechanisms embodying more or less specific structural details and arrangement and location of parts, my invention, in its broadest aspect, is not limited in these respects, and many modifications thereof may be effected without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. I desire, therefore, that only such limitations shall be imposed as are indicated in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a-locomotive, the combination with a cab, of two articulated running gears, each of said running gears com )rising two auxiliary trucks, a plurality of pairs of driving wheels located between the auxiliary trucks, side-rod members for joining said driving wheels, motors mounted above said driving wheels, and means for joining the motors to a point on the side-rod members intermediate two pairs of said'driving wheels.
2. In a locomotive, the combination with a cab, of two articulated running gears, each of said running gears com rising two auxiliary trucks, a plurality 0 pairs of driving wheels located between the auxiliary trucks, a jack shaft disposed between two pairs of said drivin wheels, a plurality of motors mounted a ove said driving wheels, and rods for joining said jack shaft to the motors and to the driving wheels.
3. In a locomotive, the combination with a cab, of two articulated running gears, each of said running gears comprising a fourwheel ivotal truck, a two-wheel radial truck, t ree pairs of driving wheels disposed between said radial and said pivotal trucks, a jack shaft disposed between two pairs of the driving wheels, two motors mounted above the driving Wheels, and means comprising rod members for joining the jack shaft to the motors and to the driving wheels.
4. In a locomotive, a jack shaft, two motor rods connected to said jack shaft, and two side rods independently and directly joined to said motor rods.
5. In a locomotive, the combination with Til a plurality of pairs of driving wheels and a plurality of motors mounted adjacent to said driving wheels, of a jack shaft, motor rods for connecting said motors to the ack shaft, and side rods independently and directly joined to said motor rods.
6. In a locomotive, the combination with a plurality of pairs of driving wheels and two motors mounted above said wheels, of a jack shaft located between two pairs of said wheels, and four rods for joining said motors to the driving wheels, two of said rods being joined to the jack shaft and the remaining rods being joined to the first-mentioned rods.
7. In a locomotive, the combination with three pairs of driving wheels, side rods for connecting said driving wheels, and two motors mounted above said driving wheels, of a jack shaft located between two pairs of said driving wheels, motor rods for joining the motors to the jack shaft, and side rods for joining the driving wheels to the motor rods.
8. In a locomotive, the combination with a plurality of pairs of driving wheels, two motors mounted above said driving wheels,
and a jack shaft located between two pairs of said driving wheels, of two motor rods and side rods for joining said motors to the driving wheels, and a jack shaft having a pin for joining the two motor rods together, said side rods being pivotally joined to the motor rod adjacent to said jaclcshaft pin.
9. In a locomotive, the combination with two motor rods, two side rods and a jack shaft, of a pin mounted on said jack shaft for joining the two motor rods and for preventing lateral vibration of said rods, each of said side rods being pivotally joined to the motor rod adjacent thereto.
10. In a locomotive, the combination with a plurality of motors and a plurality of driving wheels, of two side rods and two motor rods for joining the motors to the driving wheels, said rods being disposed in one vertical plane and each motor rod being directly connected to the other motor rod and also directly and pivotally connected to the adjacent side rod.
