To all whom t may concern;
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. SoHooN- oven, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Belvidere, in the county of Boone and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gearin for Washing-Machines, of which the fo lowing is a full, clear, and exact specification,
My invention is concerned with gearing for washing machines of the high-speed iiywheel, lever-actuated pounder type, and 1s designed to produce a gearing of the class described that shall be extremely simple in its construction and withal effective in its operation. It is further concerned with a Simple combination whereby the pounder shaft may Aalso be rotated through a few degrees during its movement in one direction, but not in the other.
To illustrate my invention, I annex hereto two sheets of drawings, in which the same reference characters are used to designate identical parts in all the figures, of which- Figure 1 is a central vertical section through the machine;

n carr ing out my invention, the gearing is or inarily applied to the tub 10, of the customary construction, supported on the legs 11 and provided with the cover 12, which is connected to the top by the hinges 13, which are of a peculiar design and con struction, as will be hereinafter explained.
Secured on the cover is the casting 14 which furnishes the framework for the aring, and at one end thereof is the pair of downturned ears 15, forming a. part of the aforesaid hinge 13, in which, .upon the pm 16, is fulcrumed the hand lever, which preferably takes the form of the panof bers 17, pivoted as above described, and having the-customary wooden handle 18 Securedbe- `of the rib 32, is a horizontal shaft lin upward from the casti tween their upper` ends. At the inner end of the casting 14 is formed the cup 19, which 1s seated 1n the center of the cover, and has extending downward from its center the cylindrical bearing sleeve 20, through which recrprocates the pounder shaft 21, which has the customary spider 22 secured at its lower end, this spider having the inverted ou s 23 secured thereon, one at the outer end o each radial arm. The pounder shaft 2l is secured, so that it can rotate therein, in the bearing sleeve 24, which projects outwardly from the center of the yoke or cross-head 25, a convenient method of securing the shaft in pla'ce being that shown in Fig. 1, where it will be seen that a pair of collars 26 and 27 are pinned to the shaft 21 directly above and below the sleeve 24. As a further guide for the vertically reciprocating shaft 21, I preferably provide the bearing 28, which cooperates with the upper end of the shaft 21 and is preferably formed at the uppermost portion of the gear casing 29, which is supported at the upper end of the bracket 30 secured to or near the inner end of the cast ing 14. Projecting inwardly from the bearing sleeve 31 formed at the 'center of -the gear casing 29, and connected to the bracket 30 by the rib 32, is the -bearing stud 33, on which is journaled the spur gear wheel 34, which has the eccentric bearing pin 35 projecting outwardly therefrom into the horizontal channel 36 formed in the rear face of the yoke or crosshead 25, and preferabl provided with a. rectangular bearing bloc the channel 36. Between the block 37 and the gear wheel 34 on the pin 35 is pivoted the inner end of the itman 38, the outer end of which is pivotesf) on the in 39 secured between the barsl'. To revent the crosshead 25 from swinging a ut the shaft 21 as a center, I secure on it a small plate 44 spaced away from the cross-head to form an lopen slot which slides up and down on the vertical rod 45 secured tolnd projectith the construction s own and described, ift will be obvious that as the hand lever 18 is operated, the spur gear wheel will be rotated at a speed corresponding to the speed at which the handle is operated, and in its rotation will raise and lower the pounder shaft, with the attached cups 23 in the tub, and at thc saine time the fly-wheel 43 will be speedcd up so that its momentum will assist in the operation of the machine.
While the construction thus far described Vwould reciprocate the pounder shaft 21 verhave one oi their .-itles vertical, while the other sides are inclined in the manner of an ordinary saw-tooth. Pressed against these teeth 48 are the teeth 49 of a ratchet disk 50, which is splined on the shaft 21 by the spline tooth 51 formed or secured in the edge of the central aperture thereof, and entering the helical groove 52 formed in the shaft 21. It will of course be understood that this groove can be given an desired shape to produce any desired num er of degrees of rotation at any desired part of the downward movement, say, of the shaft 21. A helically coiled expandlng spring 53 interposed between the bottom of the cup 19 and the under side of the ratchet disk 50 holds the latter yieldingly in engagement with the teeth 48, and it will of course be understood that the teeth 48 are complementary of the teeth 49, so that the disk 50 is free to turn in one direction under the action of the spline groove as the shaft 21 rises without rotation, the friction between the sleeve 2O and the bearing 28 and the shaft 21, augmented by the resistance to rising oered by the cups 23, being sufficient to overcome the sli ht friction between the two sets of teeth. W ern-however, the sleeve 24 is forced down, the coperation of Ythe vertical faces of the two sets of teeth prevents the ratchet disk 50 from rotatin in the other direction, and the disk not yiel ing, the spline groove 52 compels the shaft 21 to rotate through the anguiar distance for which the groove 52 is esigned.
The other member of the hinge is best shown in Fi 7, where it will be seen to consist of a casting 53* screwed or otherwise secured to the side. of the tub well below the top, and provided with the pair of ears 54 coperatin with `the ears l and the fulcrum in 6. This Aconstruction and location o the hinge lowers the fulcrum of the lid 12 so that the large, eccentricall -located cups 23 can be freely swun out o` the top, which would not be possibe with the same `sized cups in the same eccentric location if the side of the tu as by the hook 56 formedon the downward extension 57 of the casting 53. The other end is hooked over the arm 58, which is secured to the casting 14in any desired manner, projectin rearwardly between the bars 17 of the andlc, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
While I have shown and described my invention as embodied in the form which I at present consider best adapted to carry out its urposes, it will be understood that it is capa le of modifications, and that I do not desire to be limited in the interpretation of the followin claims except as may be necessitated by tie state of the prior art. For
instance, I might make the frame of two or morecastings, instead of a single one.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United State, is:
1. In a gearing, the combination with a support having bearing ears at one end thereof, of a hand lever of the second class fulcrumed between said ears, a bearing for a reciprocating rod in the other end of the support, a rod in said bearin a cross-head carried by said rod, a gear w eel `journaled on an axle 'carried by the support in the plane in which the rod reciprocates, an eccentric bearing pin projecting from the wheel into the cross-head, anda pitman connectng the hand lever and the eccentric bearing-pin.
2. In a gearing, the combination with a. supr port having bearin ears at one end thereof, of a hand lever of t e second class fulcrumed .between said ears, a bearing for a reciprosaid rod, a ear wheel 'ournaled on an axle` carried by t e support 1n the plane in which the rod reciprocates, an eccentric bearingpin(projecting from the wheel into the crosshea a pitman connecting the hand lever and the eccentric bearing-pin, a iy wheel also journaled on the support, and a pinion rigidly connected to the {1y-wheel meshing with' the gear wheel.
3. In a erin the combination with a support, o a sha t reciprocating. to and fro in said support having a.4 helical spline oove therein, a ratchet disk mounted in t e support and throu h which the 'shaft reciprocates having a sp 'ne lug entering the groove, a det/ent lug on the support coperating'with the ratchet disk to prevent its rotation in one direction, and means for holding the ratchet disk yieldingly in engagement with the lug.
4. In a earin the combination with a support, o a sha t reciprocating to and fro in said support having a helical spline groove therein, a ratchet disk mounted in the support and throu h which the shaft reciprocates having a sp ine lug entering the groove, a detent lug on the support coperating with the ratchet disk to prevent its rotation in one direction, and a helicallycoiled expanding spring interposed between the support and the ratchet disk to hold the i latter yieldingly in engagement with the detent lug.
5. In a gearing, the combination with a frame having bearing ears at one end thereof, of a hand lever of the second class fulcrumed between said ears, a bearing for a reciprocating rod in the other end of the frame, said bearing being associated with a cup recess, a rod having a helical spline groove therein mounted to reciprocate in said bearing, a. cross-head in which the rod is mountedto rotate, a gear wheel journaled on an axis carried by the frame in the plane in which the rod reciprocates, an eccentric bearing-pin projecting from the wheel into the cross-head, a pitman connecting the hand lever and the eccentric bearing-pin, a. cover for the cup recess having a radial detent lug on its under surface, a ratchet disk mounted in the cup and havm ratchet teeth coperating with the detent ug, and having a spline lug co @rating with the groove in the rod, and a elically-coiled expanding spring interposed between the bottom of the cup and the adjacent side of the ratchet disk.
6. In a gearing, the combination with a support having bearing ears at one end thereof, of a hand lever of the second class fulcrumed between said ears, a bearing for a reciprocating rod in the other end of the support, a rod in said bearing, a cross-head carried by said rod, a gear wheel journaled on an axle carried by the support in the plane in which the rod reciprocates, an eccentric bearing-pin projecting from the wheel into the cross-head, a pitman connecting the hand lever and the eccentric bearing-pin, and means for preventing the rotation of the cross-head.
7. In a washing machine, the combination with a tub, o a hinged cover therefor, operating mechanism on said cover and a counterbalance sgring interposed between said cover and tu 8. In a washing machine, the combination with a tub, of a cover therefor, operating mechanism on said cover depending into the tub, and a hinge secured to said tub and cover with its pivot below the top of the tub, for the purpose described.
9. In a washing machine, the combination with a. tub, of a cover therefor, operating mechanism on said cover depending into the tub, the casting on the lid having a pair of ears overhangmg the edge and extending below the top of the tub, and a hinge member coperatmg therewith having coperating ears also elow the top of the tub secured to the side thereof.
10. In a washing machine, the combination with a tub, of a cover therefor operating mechanism on said cover depending into the tub, the casting on the lid having a air of ears overhanging the edge and exten ing below the top of the tub, a hinge member coperating therewith having coperati ears also below the top of the tub securli to the side thereof, and an operating lever for said mechanism pivoted on the hinge pin between the two pairs of ears.
11. In a washing machine, the combination with a tub, of a cover therefor, operating mechanism on said cover depending into the tub, the casting on the lid having a air of ears overhanging the edge and exten ing below the top of the tub, a hinge member cooperating therewith having coperating ears also below the top of the tub secured to the side thereof, an operating lever for said mechanism pivoted on the hinge pin between the two pairs of ears, and having a slot therethrough in the plane of the top of the lid, an arm projecting rearwardly from the top of the cover through said slot, a hook extending outwardly from the hinge member, and a helically-coiled contractile spring connecting the arm and the hook.
