SOFA-BED.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 'Jly .30, .17918,
Application :ned August 1, 191s. serial No. 112,592.
To all whomlzft maji/ concern Be it known that I, Ln GRAND S. WHEDON,
citizen of the United States, residing at Medina, in the county of Orleans and State of New York,'have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sofa-Beds, of which the following is a specification. l
This invention relates to davenports or sofa beds of that kind which are convertible for use either as a sofa or as a bed.
The object of the invention is to provide a couch or sofa, preferably of the davenport type, of desirable and attractive construction and appearance which can be quickly and easily converted into a bed by simply removing the back, and which, when so converted` forms a comfortable bed which has the same attractive appearance from all sides and has no mechanism or parts to show that it is a converted sofa.
Vith this end in View, the sofa has a back which consists of aseparate removable piece that is retained in place by intertting or coperating parts, such as tongues and grooves, on the back and frame of the sofa whereby the back is securely and rigidly retained in place but can be removed. The cooperating holding parts for the back are of such a nature that when the back is removed the bed will present the same appearance both back and front and can be placed in 'any position in a room with either side to the front Without detracting from its ornamental appearance or indicating its con.- vertible nature.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a perspective view of a convertible sofa bed embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of one end thereof in the plane of the back.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section of one of the end frames on line 3 3, Fig. 4.
Figs. 4 and 5 are enlarged sections on iine 4 4, and 5-5, respectively, Fig. 2.
The sofa or davenport comprises a rectangular bottom frame A, upright head and foot or end frames B, a seat C, and a back D which extends from one end frame to the other at the rear side of the seat. These parts, except as to the formation of the frame and back for removably securing the back in place may be constructed, upholstered and ornamented in any suitable way. Preferably the sofa frame is provided with Vornamental supporting legs al and theend frames are of scroll form at their upper portions. f
The back D isreniovably retained in place at the back of the seat, preferably as 4foly The back is shaped to t in betweenthe end frames with its lower edge resting upon 'and supported by the horizontalback rail e ofthe bottom frame. lThe end edges of the back and the Aend frames B are provided with interfitting tongues f and grooves f', sec Figs. 9.44, and thebottom rail e andthe lower edge of the back Dare provided with 4interfitting tongues g and grooves g', see
Figs. 2 and As shown, the grooves f are formed in the end frames B and receive the end edges of the back which are fitted thereto, forming-the tongues f, while the bottom tongue g is formed on the bottom rail e and the groove g therefor is in the lower edge of the back, but the arrangement of the tongues and grooves could be different if desired, so long as the arrangement insures a secure attachment and permits the ready re moval of the back.
Preferably, grooves 7 are formed in the end frames and a tongue g formed on the bottom rail at the front of the sofa the same as at the rear so that when the back is removed the bed will have the same appear-Y ance, front and back, and so that the back can be used at either the back or the front side of the sofa. The grooves and tongues are also preferably made broad and shallow and of an ornamental contour so that they will insure a strong connection and will not be readily marred or injured and will add to, rather than detract from the ornamental appearance of the sofa. c
The back can be readily slid into and out of place between the end frames and no fastening means for the back other than the tongues and. grooves are employed. When the back is removed the bed has the same appearance, front and back, and there are no objectionable looking fastening devices or parts thereon indicating the convertibility of the sofa, as clearly shown at the front in Fig. l. A three-quarter size bed is providedv when the back is removed and as its ap pearance front and back is the same, it can be used without objection in any desired position in the room. By having two of the sofas; they can bc used side by side, as regular twin size beds.
I claim asV my invention 1. In a sofa bed, the combination of end frames, horizontal front and back rails rigidly connecting said end frames, a removable back, tongue and groove sliding connections between said back and said end frames ,which hold the ends of the back in connection with said endirames to permit the removal of the back, and a tongue and groove connection between the lower portion ofsaid back and one of said bottom rails whereby said back is held rigid with said rail between said end frames. A
2. In a sofa bed, the combination of end frames, horizontal iront and back rails rigidly connecting said end frames, said end frames having upright grooves, and one of said bottom rails having a longitudinal tongue, and a removable back having tongues at its ends which slidably t said grooves to removably connect said back with said end frames, and a groove in the lower portion of said back which receives said tongue on saidv rail to hold said back rigid with said rail between said end frames.
V3. In a sofa. bed, the combination of end frames, horizontal front and back rails rigidly connecting said end iframes, and a removable back7 said end frames having at the frontand rear portions thereof integral parts which cooperate with integral parts at the ends of said back to form interlocking connections to hold said back in connection with said end frames either'atthe front or Aback of thesofa, and said front andbaok rails having integral parts adapted to interlock with the lower portion of said back to hold ythe back rigid between said end frames. fitness my hand this 28th day of July,
LE GRAND S. WHEDON. Witnesses:
