Specification oil-Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1918.
Application filed May 25, 1917. Serial N 0. 170,946.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES MoINTYRE a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object to vide an efiicient and particularly co able truss designed to retain the intestine in place on persons afilicted with protruding plles. With this and other objects in view, the
invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the invention applied to use,
Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the truss removed,
Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal sectional view through the supporting bulb or pad,
Fig. 4 represents a plan view of one of the elastic sections of the supporting elements removed, and
Fig. 5 represents an edge elevation, partly in section, of the rear support for the cords.
Referring to the drawing in detail, where in similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates a belt constructed of leather or other suitable material and of a sufficient length to embrace the waist of the user. One end of the belt is provided with a buckle 6 for engagement in the spaced apertures 7 formed in the opposite end thereof, whereby the size of the belt may be varied to suit the requirements of the user.
The rear or medial portion of the belt 5 is passed through a longitudinal slot 8 formed in the elastic supporting member 9, p which is constructed of rubber or similar 1 elastic material and is provided at its lower terminal with an aperture 10, in which the medial portion of asupporting cord 11 is secured. The free ends of the cord 11 are 0091 of this patent my be obtained for ortave cents each, by addresii belt to secure the cords in position.
Adjacent its forward end, each cord is secured, as lndlcated at 13, in apertures 14 formed in the opposite ends of an elastic member 15 and intermediate of the points of connection 13 between the cord and the elastic member the cord is secured, as indicated at 16, to 'the elastic member. As clearly shown in Fig. 2, the length of the portion of the cords 11 lying between the points of connection 13 with the elastic member 15 are greater than the length of the elastic members, so as to permit the latter to be expanded or stretched.
The bulb or pad 16, which is of suitable shape and size for insertion in the anus, is provided with a longitudinal bore 17 and tubular extensions 18 projecting outwardly of the opposite ends thereof and communicating with the bore 17. 'The cords ll are slidably positioned through the bore 17 of the pad or bulb and also through the tubular extensions 18, and thus permit the bulb to be adjusted longitudinally of the cords. The bulb 16 is preferably constructed of pure gum rubber andthe wall of the bore 17 is reinforced in an adequate malmer to, prevent the bulb or pad from collapsing or being distorted. r A linin of fabric 19 is secured inter? nally of t e pad or bulb and the tubular extensions 18 and is designed topermit free sliding movement of the bulb 0r pad longitudinally of the cords 11. V 7
What I claim is: I
In a truss, a yieldable pad or bulb having a longitudinal bore, tubular extensions 'connected to the opposite ends of the bulb or pad and communicating with the bore thereof, and a fabric lining secured in the bulb or pad and the extensions.
In testimony whereofl aflix my signature in presence of two wltnesses'.
