To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H; LooAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sedalia, in the county of Pettis and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wire-Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends the provision of a wire stretcher by means of which wire fences can be easily and quickly put up, or repaired with the least eifort.
The invention aims to provide a device of the above mentioned character which can be quickly applied to the fence post or removed therefrom as the occasion-may require, the device being simple in construction yet very efficient for the purpose intended.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed. a

The device forming the subject matter of my invention embodles a pipe indicated at 10 and adapted to be clamped upon the fence post A to project horizontally therefrom. A vise is preferably employed for this purpose, and includes a fixed jaw 11 secured to one extremity of thepipe, and a movable jaw 12 disposed in confronting relation to the fixed jaw. A screw bolt 13 forming part of the vise is associated with the movable jaw 12 and works through a threaded opening in the fixed jaw 11, a manipulating element 14 carried by the head of the bolt being provided, so that upon rotation of the bolt in either one or the other direction will cause the movable jaw 12 to Specification of Letters Patent. The fixed jaw 11 is also provided with a socket 16 disposed at the side of the bolt 13 opposite the shank 15, the socket receiving the adjacent end of the pipelO, while a set screw 17 is employed to bind against the pipe whereby the jaw 11 and its associated parts isheld in a fixed position upon the pipe. acent its opposite extremity is a cross piece 19 to the opposite extremities of which'i's pivotally secured the corresponding bifurcated terminals-20 of thearms 21. These arms converge forwardly and terminate in hook-like portions 22 which are normally disposed in close proximity to each: other. These arms are pivotally connected together adjacent the cross piece by means of links 23, while the arms operate for the purpose to be hereinafter more fully described, in a guide 24. The cross piece 19 preferably defines a socket for the reception of one end of a lever 25, which lever is 'deta chably'associated with the cross piece and capable of being used at either end of the latter. The lever is adapted to rock the cross piece 19 on its pivot for the purpose of alternately moving the arms 21'forwa-rdly and backwardly, with a view of permitting the hooklike extremities thereof to alternately engage in the links 26 of a chain toexert a pullupon the wire or fabric constituting the fence B. One end of the chain is connected to a flexible element 27, whilethe opposite extremities of the latter are secured'to a clamp indicated generally at V The clamp- C preferably comprises a pair ssl of elongated members 28 and 29 respectively,
'which'members' may be constructed from any suitable material and of any partlcular of threaded bolts 31 are extended through openings in the extension of the member 28 andhave their headed extremities secured to a rod 32 which is journaled'in a bearing formed on the extension of the member 29.
A pair of nuts 33 for each of the bolts 31 are provided, these nuts being arranged at the opposite sides of the extension of the member 28 to hold the-respective members operatively associated. vianifestly by reason of thisconstruction the members 28 and 29 are hingedly connected together at one end, whereby these members can be readilyseparated to receive therebetween the wire fabric B constituting the fence. The members have their adjacent faces or sides corrugated for the purpose of effectively clampingtherebetween the wire fence fabrib B in the manner clearly illustratedin the drawings. The member 29 is provided with a plurality of spaced threaded bolts 34; that project through suitable openingsin the other member of the clamp, and when the nuts are tightened upon these bolts the respective members are effectively held in clamping relation. It might here be stated that the respective members of the clampcanibe spaced: from each other different distances to accommodate the particular size of the material to be clamped therebetween, this adjustment being effected by adjusting the nuts 33 aswill be readily understood.
A In practice the wire fence fabric B is clamped between the members 28 and 29, subsequent to the positioning of the pipelO upon the fence post-A. The chain 283s then engaged by one of the arms 21,- and by oscillating-the lever 25, thearm-s are-alternately-moved forward and backward, each time the hook-like extremity 22 ofone of the arms is m ved forward. and engages one of the links 26 of the chain, so that when this particular arm is moved rearwardlv a pull is exerted-upon the chainin a direction to stretch the'wire fabric B. The cross piece 19 carries an arcuatesl1aped-plate 36 which is provided with aplurality of openings 3'? adapted to be successively brought into registration with an opening 88 of a bracket 39. Thesealined openings are adapted to receive a pin 4.0m lock the cross piece 19 against further movement when the wire fabric has been drawn sufficientl taut, thus permitting'use ofboth handsofthe operator in stapling-cor other-wise securing the fabric B to the post A. It will be noted that the pipe 10 can be quickly and easily attached to or removed from the fence post A. as the occasion may require, and that the adjustment of the jaw 12 permits the device to be clamped uponposts of different dimensions.
Attention is now directed to the fact that by loosening the set screw 17 the pipe 10 can be turned in its socket with a view of arranging the stretcher in many different positions for use,and by tightening the set screw 17 these parts may be held fixed relatively. By reason of this adjustment it is manifest that the stretcherm ay be attached to either side of the post and that the stretcher may be placed in a position for stretching the wire in either'dir'ection along either side ofthe proposed line of fence. Again the lever 25 may thusbe placed in a 110*izontal position with the free end extending at right angles to the pipe 10 on either the right or left side thereof, or the lever 25 may be arranged vertically 'ith respect'to the pipe 10, so as to be conveniently operated from 'a most advantageous POSIi lOH;
It is believedthat from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent without requiring a more extended explanation and therefore the same has been omitted! However I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction and arrangement of parts herein shown as the same is merely illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention-and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
