VEHICLE-SPRING. v
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 23,1918.
Application filed December 15, 1916. Serial No. 137,106.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH MARIE ETIENNE FRANG, a citizen of the French Republic, residing at Lyon, in France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Springs, of which the following is a specificatio This invention relates to improvements in vehicle springs more especially applicable to motor cars.
The device comprises a leaf-spring connected to the chassis of the vehicle by means of a support on which it can oscillate freely. Combined with this leaf sprin is a spiral spring, set in action by said lea '-spring,.and
connected at one end to an arm connected to the coupling member of the plates of the leaf-spring and at the other end to a double armed lever, provided with a lateral arm connected by a link to a pivot around which is rolled the mainleaf of the leaf spring,
while the second arm of the lever which is in extension of the first is connected to the chassis. 1
The annexed drawings illustrate the invention. or .U
Fi re 1 is an elevation of the improved vehi e spring. l a o Fig. 2 is a section on the dotted line in Fig. 1.
The device is essentially composed of a leaf-spring a secured to the coupling plate a and eye block 0 by straps I) provided with nuts 6 the coupling plate being situated not in the middle of the leaf spring but at about one third of its length from the front end thereof. The eye block 0 rocks on a bolt d projecting from a bracket Z secured to the chassis frame. The eye block 0 has a downwardly extending arm d having at its end an eye e to receive a screw threaded rod f, regulatable in length, by means of the nut g; to this rod is attached a spiral spring h the other end of which is fixed to a member 2' surrounding and sliding on a lever j rovided at right angles with an arm I: to w ich is pivoted as at Z a link m provided with a pivot n around which is rolled the main leaf 0 of the leaf-sprin a.
The fulcrum of t e lever 7', his connected by a link p pivoted at g on the chassls frame 1' of the car. The main leaf is connected at the other end to the rear axle of the vehicle as at r The WW9? of the s iral spring h is r g lmble ypasse 0f 1 9 W f and is also regulatable by sliding the mem ber z'lalong the lever j by means of a screw it engaging a screw threaded hole 1n sa1d-mem her so that the position of the hook or point of attachment *0 of the'spring to the lever j can be adjusted according to the weight of wise movement in a brid e 2 and is pro vlded with a'hexagonal head a.
- Owing to this arrangement the springlh acts as a compensating or check sp'ring.
WVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure my Letters Patent of the United States is 1, A vehicle spring comprising in combination a leaf spring, a coupling plate there for, situated at about onethird the length of said leaf spring, means for attaching said coupling plate to said leaf spring, a support for said coupling plate, a depending lever pivoted on said plate, a double armed lever having one end pivoted to thecar frame, a plvot for'said double armed lever, a lateral 7 arm on said double armed lever,a link connecting the extremity of said lateral arm to the short end of said leaf spring with respect to said coupling plate, the long end of said leaf springbeingconnected to the vehicle axle and a traction spring connecting the extremity of said depending lever to the free end of said double armed lever.
2. A vehicle spring comprising in combination a leaf spring, a coupling plate therefor, situated at about one third the length of said leaf spring, means for attaching said coupling plate to said leaf spring, a support for said coupling plate, a depending lever pivoted on said support, a double armed lever having one end pivoted tothe car frame, a pivot for said double armed lever, a lateral arm on said double armed lever, a link connecting the extremity of said lateral arm to the short end of said leaf spring with respect to said coupling plate, the long end of said leaf spring being connected to the vehicle axle, a traction spring connecting the extremity of 'said depending lever to the free end of said double the car. The screw 23 revolvesjwithout' endpivoted on said support, a double armed lever having one end pivoted to the car said eye block, a double armed lever, a link connecting the fulcrum of the double armed frame, an aXle-fonsaid double-armed -lever,--=lever to'-the car-frame, a link connecting a lateral arm on said double armed lever, a link connectlng the extremity of'saidlateral' arm to the short end of said leaf spring with ---respect to said-coupl i-ng plate,"thelong end of said leaf spring; .b eing connected.to the vehicle axle, a block slidable on the free cendlof saidsdouble armed lever, means for sliding'andifixing said block on said free.-
7 end, a spiral spring,;l1aving one extremityzpconnected to saidnslidable block, a screw ...threaded rodrpassing-through an .eye of the; aforesaididepending lever and to which the other extremityof saidspiralspring is con- 7 .nected,.,and.a nut for adjusting theprojection of said' rod: through said eye.
7 A. A vehicle spring comprising -1n combination a leaf:spr1ng,:an eye .block,.means for.-
attaching said eye block to said leafspring,
one of the arms of said lever to the end of said leaf spring nearer to the coupling plate the end of said leaf spring remote from the coupling plate being connected to the vehicle axle a traction spring connecting the said eye bolt arm to the other arm of said double armedlever and means for adjusting vthe tension of said traction spring.
. '6; A vehiclespringcomprising in combi- -Xnation.a leafsprlng, an eye block therefor,
means. fonattachingsaid eye. block to said .leaf spring, bolt on which said eye block pivots, a depending arm lntegralpwith said ey ebolnwadouble armed lever, a link connecting the'fulcrumof the double arm lever to the car frame, a link connecting the eX- .tremity. of one of thearms .o'fsaid lever to theend'of said leaf spring, a sleeve slidable if .-,a b olt on' which said eye block pivots, a de. a
