I l l ISAAC UNSWOR-TH, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO.
DINING FOR THE THBOATS 0F FIREPLAGES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 23, 1918.
Application filed August 14, 1916. Serial No. 114,732.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC UNswonTH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuynhoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Linings for the Threats of Fireplaces, of which I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention comprises a hollow lining or casi insertible in the throat of a fire place an" providing in itself all the flue connection required to conve the products of combustion from the fire p ace into the chim ney.
It is designed to be set directly over the fireplace and rest upon the side walls thereof.
It further comprises a correctly proportioned hollow casing having properly pro portioned parts so designed as to promote a perfect draft and good combustion in the grate, and contains a vertical opening or passage in the rear, communicatin with the chimney flue and inclined sides w ich constitute the lining proper which are positioned over the fire place and which direct the products of combustion into the vertical passage and thus to the chimney.
It also includes a damper pivoted in the vertical passage and positioned to control the passage of the products of combustion from the hood portion into the flue.
The invention further comprises the combination and arrangement of parts and construction of details hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the acompanying drawings Figure 1 is a vertical section of the fireplace lining and chimney flue; Fig. 2 is'a frontzelevation of the fireplace showing the linin and attached parts in dotted lines embed ed in the walls; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lining from the rear showing the vertical connecting passage between the lining and chimney flue, and flange which rests upon the walls of the fire place Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the front of the said lining.
In these views A is the fireplace openin A the walls; B is a metal plate prefer-ab y an angle plate over the fire place opening which supports the brick work above; 0 is the lining or hollow casing which is pro vided with a marginal flange (1" upon its lower front and side edges; the front flange rests upon a second angle plate I), and the side flanges rest upon the side walls of the fire place. i
The front wall E and side walls F of the lining are inclined toward the upper end, and the rear wall (7 is vertical, and with walls E and F approaching a hollow wedge in shape, and the rear wall is provided with a vertical, opening preferably central with which a vertical passage H. in the rear cornon ni catcs The front wall of this passage is cut away to connect the lining and vcrtii al 1 as and the lower end of the ."JI'llfl-l 5 L1, closed by means of the narrow cotton wai H which COIIllPBlS all prmlucl's of ndale tion to be drawn first through th lining and thence directed into the central vcrtical passage-1i.
A single damper or valve I is l'iingcd at the rear lower edge of the vertical. passage and by alternately directing it to engage with the front wall of the lining and rear Wall of the vertical passage the draft can be easily controlled.
This damper can be operated by means of a jointed rod J attached thereto, which passes through the front Wall of the fire place, and the outer end of this rod can hang down over the wall if desired.
The walls of the vertical passage are designed to rise hi h enough in the chimney flue to contact with the fire brick or lining L to prevent injury to the brick Work.
A lining of this characteris a long step toward practical and el'licient work in con structing a fire place, since it eliminates all inexperienced and rou h mason work and is proportioned and balanced to provide a proper draft in the chimney. 1
The lining and vertical flue are completely embedded in brick work and when completed they are not visible, and the fire place and mantel piece can be completed in any form ,of ornamental design desired.
The flue member engages the rear wall of the chimney flue and the rear wall of the fire place connects thereof. p The lining and vertical fluemember are unitary in structure-but can be made in sections rigidly connected together if desired, and the material of which it is composed m rits pa t or sheet met l or fire mkwith the lower rear edge m 1'; Hill msimilar substance, the reqnirm z: cnl living llnn it shall be so constructed an in be liiu 11:91:11 mil :nnl inserlihle by unskilled labor m any lil'n place.
It can alsn 1n llllllit in sLzmdunl sizes for nnmmliutn :ml v lniiklcl's.
