BOTTLE AND LIKE vnssnn Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 23, 1918.
Application filed September 28, 1917. Serial No. 193,682.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENOIT Josnrrr XAVIER GossELIN, a subject of the King of England, residing at London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles and Like Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bottles or like vessels for liquids, and has for its object to provide means whereby the liquid, for example ink, contained in the bottle, may be brought to a convenient level for use when the general level in the bottle is lower than is convenient for use.
According to the present invention a vessel for containing liquid comprises the combination of a main container for the liquid having a single opening, a dipping well within the container arranged under the opening, and a rigid-walled filling chamber for the dipping well above the open mouth thereof to hold liquid when the vessel is inverted communicating both with the contailqer and with the mouth of the dipping we The term dip ing-well as used throughout this specl cation and claims will be understood to include a like well whether used for dipping, as for example when applied to an inkpot into which a pen is dipped or for other purposes, as for example holding water for the use of birds.
The invention will be describedas applied to an ink-bottle, though, as stated above, it is not restricted to this application. In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 1s a vertical section through an ink-bottle constructed according to one method of carrying out this invention, and
Figs. 2 to 5 are vertical sections each through a different construction of ink-bottle according to. the present invention.
"The same letters indicate the same parts throughout the drawings.
Tlie'bo'ttle shown in Fig. l is in the form of a main container B divided by a diaphra B into a lower ortion and an upper;c amber S, herein ref rred to as a filling chamber. Openings 0 in the diaphragm er afl'ord communication between the cham S and the space beneath it.
Depending from the diaphragm is a tubelike dipping well R whose upturned open mouth opens into the filling chamber S. Immediately above the mouth of the dipping well is a neck in the top wall of the container, provided with a cork or stopper E.
The use of this bottle is as follows The level of the ink in the container may be only that indicated by the line C, but by inserting the cork E, tipping the bottle up so that ink flows through the openings 0 and collects in the chamber S, and then turning the bottle back to its normal position, the ink will fill the well R approximately to the level indicated by the line D. The cork E can then be removed and the well R supplies the ink required for immediate use. When the ink has got too low in the'well R, the well must be replenished by again tipping up the bottle as already described.
In Fig. 2 the dipping-well is carried from the bottom of the container and has an enlargement R at the top which cooperates with the top of the bottle to provide the equivalent of the chamber S of Fig. 1. The well is filled by inverting the bottle so that the liquid flows around between the enlargement and the sides of the container and thus enters the dipping-well when the vessel is re-inverted.
In Fig. 3 a detachable dipping-well is again provided, being carried in a plug J which is pushed into an opening at an angle to the vertical. The lug J has a hollow enlargement S outsi e the container and beyond this enlargement is provided with a neck to take the stopper E. The enlargement S enables a considerable body of ink to collect in it when the container is tipped up so that the well R is filled.
In Fig. 4 the well is attached to the container in a manner similar to that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, but instead of the solid stopper E, a hollowstopper S is-secured in the neck of the bottle. This stopper S serves the same urpose as the enlargement S and the plug in Fig. 3, but the stopper is' removed when the dipping-well 1s to be used.
if desired to prevent it rom stopping thew chamber for the dippingwe l mouth thereof to hold liquid back flow of the ink if more should flow into the to of the container than can be received y the well R.
'Although a considerable number of modifications of this invention have been described in this specification, it will'be appreciated that further modifications can still be made without departing from the spirit of this invention. I
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A vessel for containing liquid comprising the combination of a main container for the liquid having a single opening, 'a dipping well within the container arrange under the opening, and a ri 'd-walled filling above the open whe the ves-. sel is inverted, communicating both with the corfiainer and with the mouth of the dipping We 0 I I q 2. A vessel for containing liquid, comprising the combination of a main container for the liquid having a single opening,
- rigid-walled filling the liquid. having a single opening, a diping. well within the container arrang under the opening,
said opening constltuting a rigid-walled filling chamber for open mouth thereof to hold liquid when the vessel is inverted, and communicating botli with the container and with the mouth of the dipping well.
3. A vessel for containing liquid, comprising the combination of a main a hollow arranged in the opening in and constituting a dipping well within the container, said lug having a chamber a ove the open mouth of the dipping well to hold liquid removable plug the container,
when the vessel is inverted, and a passage of the plug communicating 1 through the wall with the container.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
