BERTRAM 1i. RANCH, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
AUTOMATIC REGISTERING DEVICE.
Application filed. February 10, 1917.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BERTRAM F. RANCH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Registering Devices, of which the following is a full, true, and exact specification.
My invention relates to automatic registering devices, and more particularly to devices of this class which are adapted to be used on street cars, or other public conveyance. The principal objects of this device is to provide an improved and novel and automatically operated type of registering device in combination with the steps of a street car or the like in order that all who enter the car are automatically registered.
While it is well known that many registering devices are at present in use, it is believed that applicant is new in a device which is operated from the steps of a car. Applicants device is used more particularly to check to some extent the ticket register on the ordinary pay-as-you-enter car.
Other objects will appear as my invention is more fully explained in the following specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim:
In the drawings Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of the rear end of a street car. Fig. 2 is a plan View of same with parts broken away. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side elevation of my device shown separate from street car steps.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, numeral 1 indicates the body portion of a street car which is provided with steps 2. One of the steps 2 is hinged at one end as at 3, and at the other end is free to move within certain limits in a vertical direction. Stops 4 limit the movement of the free end of the step. A spring 5 normally holds the step in its uppermost position, and when tread upon it is forced downwardly into its lowest position. The movement of the free end of the step is taken advantage of to Specification of Letters Patent.

operate a counting or registering device 6, which is of any wellknown or standard type, and is not a part of applicants invention, as applicant is not claiming any improvements in the register itself. A bearing 7 is attached to the inside of the movable step 2, and is connected by means of a link 8 to a lever 9, which is fulcrumed to a bearing 10 which is secured to the step frame 11. The free end of lever 9 is piv oted to the operating connection 12 of register 6. When a person entering the car treads upon the loose step 2, his weight is sufficient to overcome the resistance of spring 5, and force the free end of the step against the lower limit stop t. The movement of the step operates the lever 9 by means of the link 8, and the lever 9 in turn operates the register 6 through a distance required to register one additional unit.
\Vhile I have shown a particular form of embodiment of my invention, I am aware that many minor changes therein will readily suggest themselves to others skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and I therefore desire to avoid being limited to the exact form shown and described.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is:
In combination, a frame, a step hinged at one end to the frame, two spaced stops on the opposite side of the frame and between which the opposite free end of the step is fitted, a spring between the frame and the hinged end of the step, a register, a link pivoted to the under side of the free end of the step, a horizontal lever pivoted to the lower end of the link at right angles to the upper link pivot, a pivot extending from the frame to support the lever, and a pivotal connection between the free end of the lever and the register, said pivot being parallel with the pivotal connection at the opposite end of the lever.
