Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 16, 1918.
Application filed January 24, 1918. Serial 1\Io. 213,534.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN BORBLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Athens, in the county of Athens, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful VVire- Twisting Tool; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to, which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to a wire twisting tool, and has'for its object to provide a device of'this character which embodies novel features of construction whereby the adjacent ends of two lengths of wire can be quickly and securely spliced together.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a' tool of this character which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction, which can be easily carried in the pocket and readily manipulated, which is not liable to break or get out, of'repair, which does not require any special adjustment, and which will twist the ends of the wire in a secure manner.
-With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a wire twisting tool constructed in accordance with the invention, showing the same in operative position.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof, showing the same as initially applied to the overlapping ends of two lengths of wire preparatory to twisting the same together.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line 1-4 of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5 is a view of a twisted wire connection formed with the tool.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, which illustrate one embodiment of the invention, the numeral 1 designates a head which has an' integral handle 2 extending rearwardly therefrom and an integral hooked arm 3 projecting forwardly therefrom, the hooked arm opening downwardly and being adapted to loosely receive the wire strands 4c and At one side of the hooked arm 3 the head is formed with an integral wire twisting shoulder 6 which has a guide notch or groove 7 therein, the ends of the said guide groove deepening and merging respectively into the top and bottom of the head, as indicated at 7. An arm 8 projects laterally from the head 1 on the opposite side of the hooked arm 3 and terminates in a guide hook 9 which has a spaced and parallel relation to the hooked arm 3, but is reversely disposed with respect thereto. This guide hook 9 also receives the wire strands 4L and 5, and when the. tool is in operation it is swung bodily about the wire strands as an axis. It will be observed that the handle 2 is offset laterally from the head 1 in a direction toward the guide hook 9 so to be disposed in a plane intermediate of the main hooked arm 3 and the'guide hook 9. The force applied to the handleifor bodily rotating the tool about the wire strands is thus caused to rotate the tool in the desired manner without any tendency to become deflected or canted out of proper position.
The end of the handle 2 is shown as provided with an opening 10 which can be used for initially bending the extremities of the wire strands 4L and 5 at right angles, as indicated at 4 and 5. When it is desired to connect the two strands of wire, they are brought side by side and positioned within the main hooked arm 3 and guide hook 9, as indicated by Fig. 2, one of the laterally bent ends of the wire strands, in the present instance the end P, being in engagement with the guide notch 7 of the shoulder 6. The tool is then rotated bodily about the wire strands, with the result that the twisting shoulder 6 of the head causes the laterally projecting end 4? of the wire strands l to be coiled about the strand 5 in the manner indicated by Fig. 1. After the end 4* of the strand 4 has been properly twisted around the strand 5, the tool is reversed and the end 5' of the strand 5 twisted around the strand 4:, thereby producing a splice such as that shown by Fig. 5; The two ends of the wire are thus securely fastened together so that there will be no danger of the wires pulling apart under any ordinary strain to which they may be subjected.
If desired, the lateral arm 8 and guide hook 9 may be detachably secured to the head 1, thereby enabling a longeror shorter arm 8 to be used, as may be necessaryto splice the wires in the most effective manner. As indicated on the drawing the arm 8 is provided with a base 11 which fits against the head and is detachably secured thereto by a fastening member such as the screw 12. A polygonal stud 13 projects from the base 11 at the point where the screw opening is provided therein, said stud being adapted to be received within the corresponding recess in the head 1, so that a single screw or fastening member 12 will be sufficient to secure the device in position and lock it against movement upon the head.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A wire twisting tool including a head, a handle projecting rearwardly from the head, a main hooked arm projecting forwardly from the head and opening laterally on one sidethereof, an arm projecting from the head at one end of the main hooked arm and terminating in a guide hook which has a spaced and parallel relation to the main hooked arm and opens laterally on the opposite side of the head, said hooked arms being adapted to loosely receive the strands of wire to be twisted, and a twisting shoulder projecting from the head at the opposite end of the main hooked arm and provided with a guide groove adapted to receive the laterally projecting end of one of the wire strands.
2. A wire twisting tool including a head having a polygonal recess in one side thereof, a handle extending rearwardly from the head, a hooked arm projecting forwardly from the head and adapted to loosely re ceive the strands of wire to be twisted, a twisting shoulder projecting laterally from one side of the head and provided with a guide groove adapted to receive the laterally projecting end of one of the strands of wire, an arm projecting laterally from the head on the opposite side of the hooked arm and terminating in a guide hook which has a spaced and parallel relation to the hooked arm, a base provided at the inner end of the lateralarm and'fitting against the side of the head, a polygonal stud projecting from the base and received within the before mentioned polygonal recessof the head, and a fastening member detachably securing the base to the head. 7
