To all whom it may concern I i e it known that I, WILLIAM HANDLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles, of which the following is a description.

My invention relates to handles, and more partlcularly to a reinforced handle for suit cases, bags, satchels and the like. One of the objects of my invention is to provide an improved handle of this character which will be of great strength and durability and which is of simple construction and capable of being economically manuf actured.-

Another object of my invention is to provide a handle wherein all relative movement of the component parts thereof will be prevented and which will retain its shape when subjected to heavy loads.

Still further objects of my invention are to provide an improved construction wherein practically none of the strains on the handle is imposed directly on the outer coverings of the handle, and wherein the outer surface of the handle is free from rough seams or protuberances, whereby the wear on the handle is reduced to a minimum and the same will be easy and comfortable to the hand.

Other objects and features of my invention will be hereinafter more specifically de scribed and claimed. 7

In order that my invention may be -more clearly understood, attention is directed to the drawing forming part of this specification, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of my invention, and in which:

Referring to the drawin reference character A represents the ller member or wickle of the handle which is preferably composed of a central part 1 consisting of a piece of rope or similar material-and which is preferably strengthened, enlarged and shaped to conveniently conform to the hand between its end portions as by means of a triangular piece of paper 2 or other suitable flexible material wound thereon. The paper 2 is so wound on the member 1 that the wickle will be thickest in the middle, as clearly shown. in Figs. 2 and 3. The wickle or filler member A is suitably secured to the central portion of a flat fairly heavy piece 3 of leather or like material, as by means of a suitable adhesive, the leather piece 3 preferably being coextensive with the filler member or wickle A. In order to render the handle strong and durable, a preferably flat reinforcing member 4:, preferably formed of steel, hard fiber or other suitable stiff material, is disposed between the filler member or wickle A and the leather piece 3, and is preferably co-extensive with members A and .3. To maintain the reinforcing member 4: in. proper position relative to the other parts of the handle, the same is preferably permanently and rigidly secured to the lower side of the wickle A, preferably by the last few windings of the piece of paper 2, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. A covering strip 7 of suitably finished flexible material, preferably leather, is fitted closely about the wickle A and securely fastened, preferably by sewing, to the bottom leather piece 3. The side portions 8 of the covering strip 7 beyond where the latter is sewed to the leather piece 3 are turned upwardly and backwardly into close engagement with the main portion thereof between where it is sewed to the piece 3. Bag supporting rings 5 are placed on the end portions of the composite member formed of the wickle A, leather piece 3, reinforcing strip 4, and covering strip 7, and said end portions are then bent downwardly and backwardly against the under side of the main portion of the leather strip 3 to form the end loops 6 of the handle. These bent end portions are securely fastened to the under side of the leather strip 3 as by tacking or pasting the same thereto. It will be apparent that portions 7 of the covering strip 7 will overlie and form a covering for the inner sides of the loops 6. A filler 9, preferably of leather, is firmly secured to the under side of the leather piece 3 preferably by being sewed to the latter between the ends of the composite member made up of members A, 3, A and 7, as shown in Fig. 2. The side portions of the leather piece 3 and the leather filler 9 are bent and worked upwardly about the sides of the filler or wickle A and the covering 7 thereof, until they lie closely in engagement andshaped to conform to the grip of the hand between the bent end portions thereof, substantially as described.

8. A handle comprising a filler member or Wickle, a bottom member, a reinforcing member of stiff material disposed between said bottom member and a portion of said filler member, all of said members being substantially co-extensive and secured together, the end portions of said members being bent into loops for the reception of rings or the like adapted to be applied to a bag, a filler disposed between the ends of said members, and a substantially smooth covering for all said members and said filler, substantially as described.

9. A handle comprising a filler member or Wickle consisting of a flexible member and stiffening means comprising a sheet of flexible material wound thereon, a flexible bottom member, and a reinforcing member secured to said Wickle or filler member between a portion of the latter and said bottom member by one or more of the windings of said sheet of flexible material, substantially as described.

10. A handle comprising a filler member or wickle, a bottom member, a reinforcing member disposed between a portion of said filler member and said bottom member, a covering tting closely over said filler member and secured tosaid bottom member, said covering having its side portions turned upwardly and back onto the main portion thereof, all said members and covering being substantially co-extensive and having their end portions bent downwardly and backwardly underneath the main portions thereof into loops for the reception of bag sup porting rings, the side portions of said bottom member being turned upwardly and over the upwardly turned side portions of said covering, a filler disposed underneath and secured to said bottom member between the bent end portions of said filler, bottom and reinforcing members, the side portions of said filler extending upwardly into close engagement with the outer surfaces of the upwardly extending side portions of said bottom member, and a coating of flexible material covering the bottom and sides of the handle and having its side portions turned downwardly over the edges of said bottom member and covering and fitting closely between the turned up side portions of the covering of said Wickle or filler member and the portions of the latter covering the sides of the wickle, substantially as described.

11. A handle for bags, suit-cases, and the like, comprising a Wickle, and a reinforcing element, said reinforcing element having portions thereof contacting with outer surface-portions of the wickle and being also partially embedded in said wickle, said Wickle and reinforcing element having their end portions bent to provide receiving loops, and an outer covering for said Wickle and reinforcing element.

12. A handle for bags, suit-cases, and the like, comprising a Wickle, and a reinforcing element, said reinforcing element having portions thereof contacting with outer surface-portions of said wickle, said Wickle and reinforcing element having their end portions bent to provide receiving loops, and an outer covering for said wickle and reinforcing element, combined with a central piece arranged between the ends of the said loop-shaped end portions, and an additional covering mounted upon said central piece and the said loop-shaped end portions, said second-mentioned covering being connected at its longitudinal marginal edges with the longitudinal marginal edges of said first mentioned covering.

A handle, comprising a. wickle, a reinforcing member extending longitudinally of said Wickle and having fiat end portions, a layer of flexible material also extending longitudinally of said Wickle, and shaped to the same, said layer and reinforcing memher having their end portions bent into loops for the reception of rings or the like adapted to be applied to a bag, and an outer covering for said parts having inwardly turned edge portions for securing the covering in position, said reinforcing member being of stiffer material than said Wickle and layer.

14. A handle, comprising a wickle or filler member, a reinforcing member extending longitudinally of the same and having flat end portions, a layer of flexible material also extending longitudinally of said filler member, and shaped to the same, said layer and reinforcing member having their end portions bent to provide loops, an outer covering extending over said filler member, a central filler piece arranged between the ends of said loop-shaped end portions, and an additional covering upon said central filler piece and layer, said first named covering being connected at its longitudinal marginal edge portions with the longitudinal marginal edge portions of said second mentioned covering, said marginal edge portions being directed inwardly of the handle, and said reinforcing member being of stiffer material than said layer and filler piece.

A handle, comprising a wickle, a bot tom member, a fiat reinforcing member extending longitudinally of said wickle and bottom member, said members having their end portions bent to provide loops, an outer covering extending over said Wickle, a central filler piece arranged between the ends of said loop-shaped end portions, and an additional covering mounted upon said filler piece and the bottom member, said firstmentioned covering being connected at its gituidinal 'marginal edges of "said second- "ment'ioned covering and said reinforcing member being of stiffer material than said Wickle, bottom member, center piece and coverings. p
