Description

C. W. LUND.
WHISTLE.
APPLICATION FILD SEPT. I. 1915.
1 ,272,822. Patented July 16, 1918.
, Furl. F 1 2 I l UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES WALTER LUND, OF WILLOW, CALIFORNIA.
WHISTLE.
Application filed September 1, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAnLns WALTER LUNn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Willow, in the county of Glenn and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whistles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in signals, particularly whistles, and is designed for use in connection with automobiles motor trucks, and other vehicles, and boats.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a signal or alarm of this character in which the tone is automatically varied.
An additional object is to provide a whistle in combination with a double-acting pump whereby the alarm may be sounded on both strokes of the pump.
Still another object is to provide a very simply constructed alarm which can be inexpensively manufactured and yet which will be very efficient in operation.
With the foregoing and many other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of an alarm constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section on the plane of the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse sections taken gespectively on the lines 33 and 44 of fieferring more particularly to the drawing wherein similar reference characters designate like parts in all the views, the numeral 1 denotes a pump cylinder having flat ends 2, from one of which projects a tube 3, said tube being connected to the pump cylinder by any preferred means at the center of one end 2. This tube forms the whistle portion of the alarm and has its outer end closed and provided with a mouth 4 as is usual in devices of this character. Surrounding the tube 3 is a horn-shaped member 5 which serves to protect the whistle Specification of Letters Patent.

and also give the device the appearance of an electric horn.
Within the pump cylinder 1 is placed the piston 6 used for supplying the compressed air for operating the whistle. This piston is fixed intermediate the ends of the piston rod 7, the latter projecting through both the flat ends 2 as shown in Fig. 2. Suitable packing boxes 8 surround the openings in the ends 2 where the piston rod cxlcml therethrough so as to prevent the escape of air. One end of the piston rod has an operating means which will later he described connected thereto, while the opposite end extends into the tube 3 where it is provided with an additional piston 9 which closely fits the walls of the latter and forms a movable end therefor.
It is well known that different tones of whistles may be provided by using tubes of diflerent lengths or difi'erent fluid capacities. Therefore in the present instance I obtain a great variety of tones by varying the length Of the air chamber within the tube Thi is accomplished by moving the piston {3 back and forth within the tube.
The piston 6 for compressing the air with in the pump cylinder 1. may be operated by hand or by any other preferred means. but when the device is used on automobiles and. other vehicles the structure illustrated is ordinarily employed. This consists of an operating lever in the form of a handle 10 which is pivoted intermediate its ends to one end of the piston rod as shown at 11, this end of the rod being preferably the one opposite the end on which the piston 9 1s mounted. One end of the lever is pivoted to a link 12 which in turn is pivotally connected to an car 13 formed on one end 2 of the pump cylinder. From the drawing it will be seen that when this handle 10 is moved to cause the piston rod to reciprocate the piston 6 within the cylinder 1, it will cause the air contained therein to be compressed between either of the end walls 2.
In order to admit air to the cylinder, suitable check valves 14 are formed in each of the ends 2. The opposite ends of the cylinder are also provided with outlet ports 15 and 16, each of which communicates with a pipe 17, whereby the compressed air is fed from the pump to a point adjacent the mouth 4 of the whistle where it is discharged in such a manner that it will cause the whisinder, will close the outlet port 16.
llc to sound, The bylpfi I? is rovided with a double acting valve 18/ which, when the piston 6 is moved in one direction, as for instance toward the Ema l and of the pump cyl- When the piston is moved in the reverse direction this port 16 will be opened and the portion the pipe leading flow the port 1"?) closed. Thus a double acting pump is provided which supplies compressed air on both strokes of the piston.
Rince the piston 9 is connected directly with the piston 6 it moves therewith, and thus the air chamber of the tube 3 is canlinuousl'y changing in length. As hereinbetorc pointed out this change in the length ol. the colinnn ol air in the tube causes the tone of the whistle to clnmge. From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have invented a. Yer simply constructed, yet novel signal which will be operated continuously and the tone thereof automatically changed during the nnwcnient of the operating parts.
I claim:
1. A whistle a pump for supplying com pressed fluid for operating the same, and means for simultaneously chem g the size of the fluid chamber of said Whistle with the movement of the piston of said pump.
'2. In combination, a whistle, a pimpfor supplying compressed fluid for operating time some, and a piston dlismsod in said Whistle for changing the size of the fluid chamber and opcratable siinnltnneonsly with i a pistonsod extending through saidpump J cylinder and into said whistle, a piston disposed intermediate the ends of said rod within said pump cylinder, an. addition-ml piston on said rod Within Sold whistle and forming one end of the latter, and means for conveying con'ipressed, fluid from said pinnp cylinder to the whistle.
l. A whistle C0!" rising a compressed air supply device, a w: istle tube connected to said device, said tube having a nmutli Iflvzll the outer end thereof, a passe eway extend ing along one side of said tn c, across the outer end thereof, partway down the other side and provided with: an outlet discharging directly into the mouth of said tube, and means of communication between said air supply device. and said sway.
In...testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
