Description
S. MAHER.
WOODWORKERS SAW.
APPLICATION FILED 0 CT. 9I 1917.
1 ,272,69 1 Patented July 16, 1918.
SOLOMON MAHER, OF NORTH ADAMS, MASSACHUSETTS.
WOODWORKEBZS SAW.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it-known that I, SOLOMON MAriER, a subject Of the Sultan of Turkey, residlngat North Adams, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Woodworkers Saws; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provlde a simply constructed and inexpensive saw which may be used for marking lines at practically any angle, for numerous purposes such as cutting the ends of rafters of all sorts, and making mitered Joints, or others requiring that the cuts be made at an-angle to the length of the timber or the like.
With the foregoing general objectin view, the inventionresides in the novel features of construction and unique combinations of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a saw constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is an edge view; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the plane of the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings above briefly described. the numeral 1 designates a common type of saw blade, the lower edge of said blade having the usual teeth 2, whereas the straight upper edge 3 is rovided with a series of graduations 4 pre erably re resenting inches. The saw handle 5, which orms the head of the tool when used for marking, is provided at its front end with a straight edge portion 6 at right angles to the edge 3, and with a similar portion 7 at 45 degrees to said edge, bot-h of the portions 6 and 7 preferably having wear plates 8 of brass or other suitable material. By this arrangement, it is obvious that the saw may be used as an ordinary square, by placing the portion 6 against one edge of the timber or board, .and using the edge 3 as a rule in making the Specification of Letters Patent.

line. Similarly, the board or the like may be marked at 4'5 degrees by placing the portion 7 against the edge thereof.
In order that the tool may be used for locating lines at numerous degrees to the edges of timbers, an arcuate scale 9 is provided, this scale being positioned on an arc described around the point 10 as a center, said point being at the intersection of the portion 6 with the edge 3. The scale 9 is composed of three or more sections 11 which are positioned out of alinement, and by this arrangement, the marking slots 12 are similarly positioned, rather than providing a single slot which would weaken the saw blade. It is through these slots, that a pencil or the like maybe inserted for marking the board or timber as will be readily understood without further explanation. I attach great importance to the location of the slots 12, that is positioning these slots out of alinement, since by this arrangement, they do not weaken the blade to any appreciable extent. When using scale 9, the straight edge 6 is placed against the edge of the work and it will be seen that the indicia of said scale start at said straight edge.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be obvious that although the improved tool is of comparatively simple and inexpensive construction, it will be highly eflicient and durable for the purposes intended. Since probably the best results are obtained from the several specific details shown and described, these details constitute the preferred form of the device, but I Wish it understood that within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous minor changes may well be made.
I claim:
An angle marking instrument comprising a fiat blade having a straight edge, a head on one end of said blade having a straight edge intersecting and at right angles to said straight edge of the blade, said blade having an arcuate scale provided with indicia representing degrees, said scale having its center located at the intersection point Of the two straight edges, said blade having arcuate marking slots jointly equaling the length I of the scale in degrees but disposed in stagha nd :PresenCe ef two suhseribing gered relation with' their ends separated Witnesses.

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 1 GILBERT MAXWELL.
