BELT-BUCKLE.
Specifi cation of Letters Patent.
1 Patented July 9,
Application filcii July 28, 1916. Serial No. 111,776.
i which the following is a full, clear, concise,
and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to belts and has for its object the provision of an improved belt buckle structure to facilitate holding the belt in any given position without the use of holes in the belt proper. More particularly my invention provides a clamping mechanism adapted to engage the free belt extremity at any desired point and hold it firmly. The structure of my invention is of peculiar utility in this connection in that it has structural provision for securely clamping the belt extremity, and at the same time permitting an angular irregularity or. displacement in the belt extremities without reducing the firmness of the grip upon the free belt extremity. My invention concerns itself with means whereby the buckle portions may be removably mounted in place on any belt body.
I will explain several forms which my invention may take by referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in
Figure 1 is a front view partly in section ofa belt and buckle structure constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a view partly in section along line a'a of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the adaptability of the belt structure when the parts are angularly displaced;
Fig. e is a vertical sectional view to illustrate the structures of Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the front or escutcheon plate having been cut away;
Fig. 5 is a View similar to that of Fig. 4' showing a modified form of link;
Fig. 6 shows a link somewhat similar to the link of Fig. 1 arranged however to cooperate with a button, and
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the clamp ing: element.
' Referring more particularly to Figs. 1, 2,
a and 4, I Show a. belt 1 which has the free attaching tongue 2 and the looped opposite extremity 3. The looped extremity has a "slot t through which a link 5 can be inserted and then turned at right angles to occupy the position of Fig. l. The two portions of the loop 3 can then be snapped together by the clasp 6 to hold the link 5 in po-- sition. This link 5 forms part of the buckle structure, which buckle has the front or escutcheon plate 7 and the two side walls 8, 8. Between the side walls there is mounted the stud 9, which stud besides the two distance pieces 10, 10 carries a serrated clamping element 11.
This serrated clamping eleinent 11 is pivotally mounted upon the stud 9 and also has pivotal engagement with the link 5, the link having projections 12 to pass through holes in the side walls of said clamping element. This bridgelike clamping element is shown more in detail in Fig. 7 The free belt tongue2 is adapted to pass rearwardly of the front plate 7 and be clamped into position by the clamping element 11 as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The structure herein permits the link 5, for instance, to occupy a position at an angle to the front plate, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3, without in any way reducing the clamping characteristics of the buckle, there always being pressure due to one fiap'of the garment against the clamping element 11. Under these circumstances the angular displacement may be considerably larger than shown in Fig. 3 without aii ecting the clamping qualities of the structure.
In Fig. 5 I show alink 5* which can be held by the looped portion 3 without the use of the slot 13 shown in Fig. 1. This'link 5 is again pivotally secured to the clamping element 11 which in turn is pivotally.
mounted on the stud 9 carriedby the side walls 8.
In Fig. 6 I have hown a link 5" similarly held as shown in liig. 1 but having a'central slotted portion 14 so that it may 00- operate with a button 15 fastened to the free belt extremity. Ihis button 15 may of course be mounted upon a suitable attaching device 16 adj ustably fastened to the belt as may be desired.
From what has been described the nature of my invention will be readily clear to those skilled in the art, as will also its various modifications within the scope of the appendedeluim. Hzwing however thus debed one form which my invention. may
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A belt and belt buckle device of the char acter described comprising a front plate having two side Walls projecting rearwnrdly thereof, a clamping element arrztnged between said side Walls. means whereb said clumping element is pivotelly mounted Within said side walls. said clamping element ha ving apair of separated bridge like serrated. engaging surfaces, and a link of substantial length pivotally carried by said clamping element, said clamping element be ing adapted to clamp the belt tongue between it and the front plate, the axis of the pivotal mounting of said link and the axis of said pivotally mounted clamping element being normally in 3 plane substantially parallel to the plane of said front plate, one belt extremity being: pivotnlly asseeiztted with the free extremity of said link.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 30th day of June, l), 1916.
