To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMETT MASSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Proctor, in the county of Crittenden and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sawmill SetWVorks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to saw mill set works for regulating the thickness of the slab, board or plank cut from a log.
The invention has for its object to produce means of simple and improved construction and which may be easily operated whereby the throw of the set lever may be limited and regulated.
A further object of the invention is to produce a device of the class described having a plurality of limiting stops for variously limiting the throw of the set lever, and simple and improved means whereby any one of the limiting stops may be projected in the path of the lever.
A further object of the invention is to produce simple and improved means whereby, when one limiting stop is projected in the path of the set lever any other limiting stop previously lying in the path of the set lever will be automatically retracted.
lVith these and other ends in view which willreadily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novelarrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter .fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may-be resorted to when desired.

On or adjacent to one end of the log carriage, a portion of which appears at A, is mounted a frame structure generally designated by B, said frame structure having a bearing for the set shaft C from which motion may be transmitted in any customary well known manner to the head blocks (not shown) the present invention dealing only with the means for rotating the set shaft and for varying and limiting the movement thereof. The set shaft carries a spur. wheel 15 meshing with a pinion 16 on 'a countershaft 17, the latter shaft carrying also a ratchet wheel 18 of large diameter. Pivoted on the countershaft 17 are two pawl frames 19 and 20 carrying spring actuated pawls 21 and 22 that engage the ratchet wheel. 23 is a shaft on which is fulcrumed a lever 2st, the oppositely extending arms of which are connected by links 25 and 26 with the pawl frames 19 and 20, respectively. The lever 24 has an upwardly extending handle 27 which will be hereinafter referred to as the set lever, said handle constituting the hand lever which is grasped and manipulated by the operator for the purpose of actuating the set works. The set lever swings in the arc of a quadrant 28 which is fixed securely on the frame B, said quadrant being provided near the ends thereof with shoulders or ofisets 29 and 30 whereby extreme movement of the set lever will be limited in two directions. The shoulder 29 with which the lever normally contacts when at rest will be known as the front shoulder while the shoulder 30 will be known as the rear shoulder.
It will be seen that when the set lever is actuated by the operator moving it back and forth, the pawls carried by the frames 19 and 20 will successively turn the ratchet wheel 18 a distance governed by the throw of the set lever, the pawl actuated by one of the frames slipping idly over the ratchet teeth while the pawl carried by the other frame engages a tooth of the ratchet wheel thereby turning the same. Fro-m the countershaft on which the ratchet wheel is mounted motion is transmitted by the means herein described to the set shaft, the amount of rotation of the latter being governed by the throw of the set lever. Fixed in the frame B are arcuate hearing members 31, 32 and 33. The frame also contains an arcuate bar 34' which has been shown as being located adjacent to and slightly below the middle bearing member 32, and adjacent to the inner face of the quadrant 28. Said arcuate bar 34, for reasons which will presently appear, will be The bearing members 31, 32 and 83'atl'ord bearings for a plurality of rock shafts 35 of which any desired number may 'be'used, said rock shafts being preferably arranged in substantially .radial relation to the arcuate bearing members. Mounted in the frame in substantially concentric relation to the arcuate bearing members and in spaces intermediate said bearing members are arcuate slides 36, the
. number of said slides equaling the number of rock shafts, and each slide carrying a rack 37 meshing with a pinion 38 on one of the rock shafts. Each of the rock shafts also carries a pinion 39 meshing with teeth 40 formed on a slide 41 which constitutes a stop member, there being a number of such stop members equal. to the number of rock shafts 85. Thesestop members are fitted for transverse sliding movement in apertures 42 in the stop container 34 which latter, as previously stated, is substantially co-eXt-ensive with the quadrant 28 adjacent to which it is located. The said quadrant is provided with apertures 43 registering with the apertures 42, and adapted to receive the ends of the stop members 41 when the latter are projected in the direction of the quadrant, thereby holding the stop members securely against the impact, of the'set lever the m0vement of which in one direction the stop members 41 are designed to limit to a varied extent.
7 'Each of the arcuate slides 36 is connected at one end with a retracting spring 44. These springs serve not only to retract the slides and to maintain each slide in normal or initial position, but also, through the intermediate gearing, to maintain v the stop members 41 in retracted position with respect tothe quadrant 28; For the purpose of actuating the slides 36 against the tension of their respective springs, to project the stop members in the path of the set lever, thefollowing mechanism is provided.
Pivoted in the upper part of the frame B are a plurality of keys 45, each resembling an ordinary typewriter key in that it is provided with a finger piece 46, and each having an arm or lever 47. Each arm or lever 47 isconnected by a link 48 with one arm 49 of a bel'l crank D the other arm of which, 50, is connected by a link 51 withone of the arcuate slides 36 each of which may be pro,- vided with a laterally extending arm or 'wall of the recess.
Inorder to maintain the stop member which is projected by the depression of one of the keys in a projected position, against the tension of the retractingSpring 44, until it shall be desired to, change the set, there is provided a locking slide of arcuate form, said slide being preferably interposed between the stop container 34 and the arouate bearing member 32. The locking slide 53 is provided in its outer side face with a plurality of sockets 4 in each of which is mounted a slidable spring actuated locking member or latch 55, the number of said latches being equal to the number of rock shafts, etc. Each latch is projected outwardly from the socket in which it is mounted by aspring 56, the outward movement being limited by a stop member 57. Adjacent to each socket 54 the locking slide is provided with a concave arcuate recess58 which tioned that each latch member or slide "55 will be projected beyond the wall of the re cess 58 adjacent thereto. Each of the slides or latch members 55 is also provided with said notch, howeverijbeing spaced from the against the tension of a retracting spring 61 with which it is connected until the point of the locking arm may pass by the notched ach of the rockshafts 4 r portion 59 of the latch member. As soonas the locking arm. leaves engagement with the latch member, the locking slide will be retraeted by the action of the spring- 61 there'- by placing the outer end face of'the latch member directly in the path of the locking arm 60, thereby locking the rock shaft and the parts associated therewith against reverse movement until the locking arm shall be released. Such releasing actlon may be performed automatically by the subsequent depression of another key 45 for the purpose of changing the set. By the rotation of the rock shaft actuated by the depression of such key, the locking arm of such rock shaft will presently move the locking slide against the tension of its retracting spring sufficiently to release the locking arm of the rock shaft associated with the key that was first depressed or manipulated, thereby causing such key and the parts associated therewith to be restored to normal or initialposition by the action of one of the retracting springs 44.
A spring actuated releasing lever 62 is provided, said lever having an arm 63 that extends in the path of the locking slide, and whereby said slide may be moved at any time in order to release any locking arm 60 that may be held thereby when, for any reason, it shall be desired to do so; for instance, when it is desired to retract. all the stop members 41 in order to permit the set lever to swing to the extreme limit of its movement between the stop shoulders 29 and 80.
For the purpose of protecting the mechanism of the device suitable covering members 80are provided, said covering members being preferably in the nature of slides operable in suitable guide members 81.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains. It will be seen that the construction of the improved device is such as to permit a great range of different adjustments to bemade.
The stop members 41 whereby the movement of the set lever in one direction is limited may be manipulated very easily by manipulation of the keys 45 which latter may previously be numbered to indicate the thickness of the lumber that will be cut. Projection of any one of the stop members by means of its actuating key causes the immediate retraction, automatically, of any stop member previously projected. The stop members are held very securely against the impact of the set lever not only by the stop container but also by engagement with the apertures in the quadrant 28 which will also serve to guide the set lever and to limit the extreme movement thereof in both directions. The general construction is simple and inexpensive, and the improved device may be readily installed upon and used in connection with log carriages having well known means of many different kinds for actuating and operating the head blocks.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is: 1. In a device of the class described, a set lever, a quadrant having stop shoulders to limit the extreme throw of the lever in two directions, a stop container adjacent to and spaced from the quadrant, stop members slidable in said container toward and from the quadrant, and means for actuating the stop members.
2. In a device of the class described, a set lever, a quadrant having stop shoulders to limit the extreme throw of the lever in two directions, a stop container adjacent to and spaced from the quadrant, stop members slidable in said container toward and from the quadrant, and means for actuating the stop members; the quadrant being provided with openings to receive the ends of the stop members when projected thereby co5perating with the stop container to hold the stop members securely against the impact of the set lever.

In a device of the class described, a set lever, a quadrant having stop members limiting the extreme throw of the lever, a stop member consisting of a slide movable transversely in the direction of the quadrant to lie in the path of the set lever intermediate the stop shoulder, and means for actuating said slide including a rock shaft, pinions carried thereby, teeth on the stop member meshing with one of the pinions, an arcuate spring retracted slide, and a rack carried by said slide in mesh with the other pinion on the rock shaft.

In a device of the'class described, a set lever, a quadrant having stop members limiting the extreme throw-of the lever, a stop member consisting of a slide movable trans versely in the direction of the quadrant to lie in the path of the set lever intermediate the stop shoulder, and means for actuating said slide including a rock shaft, pinions carried thereby, teeth on the stop member meshing with one of the pinions, an arcuate spring retracted slide, a rack carried by said slide in mesh with the other pinion on the rock shaft, a pivotally supported key, and connecting means between said key and the rock shaft for rocking the latter.
5. In a device of the class described, a set lever, a stop container, stops slidable in said container and adapted to be projected in the path of the set lever, means for projecting the stop members, spring actuated means for retracting the stop members, means for temporarily locking and securing the stop members in projected position, and means for releasing the locking means.

In a device of the class described, a stop container, stops transversely slidable therein, said stops having teeth on the faces thereof, slides movable transversely of the stop members, racks carried by said slides, rock shafts having pinions meshing with said racks and other pinions meshing with the teeth of the stop members, pivotally supported keys, connections between the keys and the rock shafts including bell cranks, and connecting links whereby the rock shafts may be rotated by depressing the keys, and
radially with respect to the shaft carrying the set lever, pinions on said rock shafts in mesh with the racks carried by the arouate slides, other pinions on the rock shafts meshing with the toothed'faces of the slidable stop members, means for rotating the rock shafts, and means for retracting the arcuate slides. Y

In a device of the class described, a set lever, a shaft on which'the lever is fulcrumed, means for limiting the extreme throwof the set lever in two directions, an arcuate stop container, stop members slidable transversely in said container and adapted to be projected in the path of the set lever, said stop members having toothed faces, arcuate slides, racks carried by said slides, rock shafts supported substantially radially with respect to the shaft carrying the set' lever, pinions on said rock shafts in mesh with the racks carried by the arcuate slides, other pinions on the rock shafts meshingwith the toothed faces'of the slidable stop members, means for rotating the rock shafts, and means for retracting the ar cuate slides, in combination with means for retaining the parts temporarily against the tension of the retracting spring.
9. In a device of the class described, a set lever, a shaft on which 'the lever is fulcrumed, means for limiting "the extreme throw of the set lever in two directions, an
arcuate stop container, stop members slidable transversely in said container and adapted to be projectedin the path of the set lever, said stop members having toothed faces,
arcuate slides, racks carried by said slides,
radial arms fixed on the rock shafts, an arcuate spring'retracted locking slide adapted to be moved by said radial arms, and
spring actuated latch members carried by said locking slide and adapted for engagement with the radial arms to prevent reverse rotation of'the rock shafts under the influence of the retracting springs.
