which the sewing thread is sustained as a loop extending from thework around the looper that a. cutting implement may be brought into operation or actuated to cut the arm of said threadloop which extends fromthe stitches to the looper.
Another object of theinvention is to provide a'novel thread cutting mechanism for single threadsewing machines.

The machine shown in the drawings is particularly adapted for the sewing of a group of stitches to attach a tag or ticket T to a piece of material M, but it is not my intention thereby to limit this invention to that class of machines. It is however my intention to limit my invention to a machine in which provision is made to eifect in some manner a relative movement between the work and the stitch forming devices. It being understood that said relative movement between the work may be vibratory for a distance of one or more stitches or continuous in one direction for a series of stitches and that said relative movement between the work and the stitch forming devices is not'limited to the movement of the Work.
As shown in the drawings 5 is the bed plate of the machine having the standard 6 furnished with the arm 7 having the head 8 in which is operatively mounted the needle bar 9carrying the needle 10 which cooperates with the looper 11 at the under side of the bed plate 5 to form chain stitches, so called. Provision of any ordinary means being made 'toefl'ect the operation of said needle andsaid looper ofwhich means the usual shaft 12 having the gear 13 preferably formspart;
At the under side of the bed plate 5 is rotatably mounted the cam disk 14 having the usual pinion which is driven by the gear 13 of shaft 12, in the usual manner to effeet the rotation of said cam disk 14 during the operation of the stitch forming devices. This camdisk 14 has the cam path 16 which may or may not have the dwells 17, 17 and.

At its outer'end lever 26 is, pivotally connected with the slide 28 which is received in a guide of'bed plate 5 and has the comparatively narrow shank 29 furnished with the loop spreader member 30 having the thread cutter 31. 1 V I Preparatory to the operation of this ma-v chine material M and a tag T are placed between the members 20 and :21 ofthe work holder or work feedingldevice 19. The machine is then operated and the work T, M, is fed or vibrated laterally with respect to the needle 10 and looper 11 while these stitch forming devices are-operated to effect the formation of securing stitches through said work. Preferably the cam members 22, 22 are so mounted on the cam disk 14 relative to the cam path 16 and to the bevel end 23 of pivoted plate 2e that after the formation of a predetermined number of stitches one of said :cam members 22 acts against said bevel end 23' of plate 24: and through the swingingof said plate effects the swinging of lever 26 to project the slide 28fo'rward during the upward movement of the needle in completing the next stitch so that the member 30 of the slide28 passesqforward through the arms a,- b of the thread loop while said 'loop is sustained by the ljooper '11 and is under some slight-tension. This manner of cutting the thread loop leves a comparatively long end of thread extending from the eye of the needle.
I understand that it is old in the artv to provide, in a two thread machine, a thread cutting finger or member onto which a thread loop is cast from the shuttle as a preliminary step in a thread cutting operation and it is nottmy intention to claim at this time such device or any thread cutting device operating in, combination with a two thread shuttle machine. Ibelieve it to be new however to effect the cutting of "a thread loop, inra single thread sewingfmachine, by the use of. a thread cutting mechanish furnished witha member which'is introduced into said thread loop and coop; crates with a cutting device to cut one arm of said thread loop while said loop is still sustained by the looper, and it is my desire.
