To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MAX Lnzrus a citizen of the United States, residing at leveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Dampers for Stoves and Furnaces, of which the following is a specification. I
his invention relates to automatic dampers for stoves and furnaces, and the inven' tion consists in a damper constructed and arranged substantially as hereinafter shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of'the invention is to?- provide a double damper arrangement for the discharge flue or pipe of a stoveor furnace, especially a gas stove or furnace, whereby down-drafts will be automatically checked and up-drafts automatically regulated by the influence of drafts in opposite directions within the'fiueor pipe. A further object is to provide a separate article of manufacture and sale, comprising a balanced damper and ring adapted to make slip engagement with the inside of stove pipes of standard s1ze.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view longitudinally of my improved damper arrangement affixed to portions of a stove-pipe, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 1, but showing the relative positions of the two dampers under the influence of a down-draft. Fig. 1 is a cross section on line 44, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a reduced view in diagram of a triple arrangement devices.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view'of a damper and its supporting ring, and Fig. 7 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of one of the two annuli comprising the ring support for the damper plate and Fig. 9 is a side view of the damper plate alone. Fig. 10 is a side view of the journal pin for the damper plate.
In installing a gas stove or furnace, the only provision generally afforded to regulate the draft is by a hand-controlled damper. The difliculty of maintaining a proper draft under the constantly changing conditions which prevail in such an installation is obvious. Moreover, different types of stoves and furnaces, and radically different pipe and flue lengths, require different damper arrangements and settings to afford quirements of damper roper regulationof the .drafts, perfect comustion at the burner, and a uniform and economical distribution of the heat units. I have discovered that. the necessary remay be met in a simple way by the use of adpair of damper devices which are adapted to operate automatically and which are particularly constructed to be adjustably affixed in any desired workin relation in the ordinary or standard pipe or fitting for the discharge flue of a gas stove or furnace. These pipes or fittings are of standard size, and my invention involves the employment of airing-shaped support 2 for a round flat damperplate 3, the said support being of a predetermined diameter externally to make asnug and slidable fit with the interior round wall of a standard pipe or fitting 4:. A T-shaped fitting is generally used, and one damper device A is placed in the main passage 6, and a second damper device B isslidably and adjustably inserted within the side extension 7 of the pipe or fitting. Both damper devices are substantially the same in construction and the same reference characters are herein applied to designate like parts. Thus, the ring or support 2 comprises two annular members 8 each made of sheet metal bent at right angles transversely to provide an inturned flange9 having a series of notches 10 and lugs or projections 11 at the edge thereof. The two members 8 spective flanges 9 in facial engagement and the lugs 11 are bent or doubled over the adjacent flange at the notches 10 to fasten the two members securely together. Each flange 9 is also provided with a pair of semicircular channels or depressions 12 oppositely on a straight line joining the extremities of a short are of the flange circle, and such channels or depressions provide divided boxes or bearings for the rounded ends 14 of a damper plate journal pin 15 when the two members 8 are fastened together with the pin in place therein.

A fixed limit .of movement of the damper plate is obtained by a lip or pair of lips 22 which are bent inward from the annular rim portion of one of the members 8 at a point adjacent or near the ends of the journal pin 15. One or more of the lugs 11 may also be bent inward to serve as a stop or as stops for the damper plate 3 when in a closed position, and this arrangement is used more often when thedamper device is installed in a longitudinal position in a Vertical pipe to positively check a downdraft. In Figs. 1 to 3, two such damper devices as described are shown in co-acting, relations. The damper device A is located in a horizontal position in the discharge end of the main or vertical pipe at a point slightly above the side extension which contains the second damper device. B arranged in a perpendicular position more or less removed from the longitudinal axis of the vertical pipe. Device A may be moveddownward or upward, more or less, and device B may be moved inward or outward, more or less, and their remoteness or nearness to one another is dependent upon the degree or amount of draft desired and the automatic regulation thereof. By moving the device B inward, its damper plate 3 can be made to swing into the vertical pipe more or less and by moving the device A downward, the respective plates,

closes, see Fi 3, and damper device B opensto permlt a temporary escape of the products of combustion, thereby preventing smothering effects at the gas burner. Such conditions are usually temporary and only a slight relief is necessary; therefore, the damper plate 3 of device B is permitted to swing outwardly only a short distance, the degree of movement thereof being fixed by the lip-22 which is flexible and adapted to be bent into different set positions relatively to the damper plate and its axis. The damper plate may also be permitted to swing absolutely free without stop or limit by pressing the lip 22 back and out of the way of the movable plate. If desired, the pipe and side extension may be provided with slots or openings 25 opposite the ends of the pivot pins for the damper plates whereby the bearings may be oiledby way of the more or less open joint between the two ring members 8. However, oiling is not resorted to under ordinary conditions as the longitudinal and rotativemovement of the journal In Fig. 5 Ishow a third damper device 0 in the direct outlet 26 for the furnace 27, and this triple arrangement of dampers is of advantage in automatically regulating direct and indirect travel of the outgoing products of combustion.
What I claim isp 1. A stove or furnace pipe having a side draft extension, in combination with separate damper plates pivotally mounted at one side of their diametrical centers within said pipe and said extension respectively on slidable supports, each plate being sensitively balanced for self-action and adapted to open and close more or less completely across the passage-Way through the part in which the same is mounted under the influence of up and down drafts through'saidpipe.
2. A pipe fitting for stoves and furnaces having a -main passage and aside opening thereto, a balanced damper plate pivotally supported at one side of its diametrical center within the said main passage to open and close automatically across said passage under the direct influence of drafts from opposite directions, and a damper plate pivotally supported at one side of its diametrical center within said side opening and balanced to open automatically under the influ- 'ence of drafts from opposite directions, the said damper plates being free to move independently of each other and each plate having an inserted support on which the plate is pivoted.
3. A stove or furnace pipe having a main passage and a side opening thereto, a swinging damper having a supporting ring therefor slidably mounted within said side opening to set said damper in various adjusted relations to the said main passage.
4:. A stove or furnace pipe having a main passage and a side opening thereto,in combination with a pair of independent selfacting dampers and separate supports for said dampers slidably mounted within said a main passage and said side opening, respectively.
5. A stove or furnace pipe and a pivoted damper plate and a ring supporting the same within said pipe and rotatably and slidably engaged therein, whereby said damper and support may be moved back from the end of said pipe.
6. A stove or furnace pipe having a side opening and a pair of self-acting damper plates mounted in independent working relations within said pipe and opening respectively, and one of said damper plates mounted on a support slidable lengthwise in said pipe to establish diflerent fixed worln'ng relations between the same and the damper in said opening.
7. A damper device comprising a pair of rings having intur'ned flanges mechanically united in facial engagement and a damper plate having a journal-pin rotatably con- I fined by channeled bearing portions between said rings.
8. A damper device comprising a pair of rings having inturned flanges united together in facial engagement, and a damper plate having a journal pin rotatably confined at its ends between said flanges.
. 9. A damper device comprising a pair of rings having projecting portions interlocked together, and a swinging damper plate having a journal pin mounted upon said rings on the chord of an arc and in the meeting plane thereof.
10. A damper attachment for stoves and furnaces comprising a pair of flanged rings having notches and projections to fasten said rings together in facial engagement,
having a journal pin with rounded ends mountedrwithin said depressions between said rings.
12. A damper mechanism for stoves and furnaces, comprising a pipe having three open extremities, a balanced damper plate pivotally supported in one of said extremities to swing open under the influence of a a draft from either direction, and a damperplate pivoted within another extremity and weighted to open automatically and adapted to be closed under the influence of a back draft, said damper plates being free to operate independently in their respective positions.
