EDMUND ruunr, orlirnw MONTEREIY, cALIFonN'iAL V i I eminence} I To all whom it maycomem: 1 1 j Be it known that I, EDMUND Dar/13a citizen of the United States, residing at-New 'Monterey, in" the {county of Monterey. and
. State of California, Y have invented certain new and useful "Improvements in Digging Tools, of whic'hth'e following isa specifica "tion;
This invention has ranians digging tool's, and has for an -object to'provide' a spade, oncombinedspade and shovel, constructed and shapedina manner to permit the digging ofa'narrow' trench to receive water and-gas pipes; electric conduits or the like.
vide means whereby my improved fdigging tool may be mountedon" a-handle, and adjusted r tive y th re oh qr ythe ng e. 'of the tool'as the" depth ofthe'tr ncn im; creases, or according to Whether the tool is" used for digging or for elevatingearth from the bottom of the trench.
In addition to the foregoing, this invention comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended metal. v g t compared to its wldth, a wldthf of approxie claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar and corresponding parts-are desig nated by the same characters of reference, throughout the several views in which they appear:
Figure 1 is a view in s1de elevation of a trench digging tool, constructed and formedin accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 1s a view thereof In plan.v
Fig. 3 is a view thereof in rear elevation, and
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional View, taken on the line 44 of Fig. 1. 7
With reference to the drawmgs, 10 1ndicates as an entirety the blade of the tool which may be cast or pressed from sheet The blade. is extremely narrow as mately two inches being suflicient for all practical purposes; the width will however' depend upon the use to which the tool is to be put. A length of approximately five or six times the width affords a proper pro portion in the dimensions. V
The outer end of the tool is formed with a straight edge 11, and the toolis curved retiree-rd from said edge with. a gradual H Spcilicationof Letters Iatent. U

The depth again decreasestoward therear f as indicated.

A, wing nut 17 "applied to the threaded end of the bolt serves to retain the bolt against displacement and to bind the ears against the handle. The'said end of the handle is provided with an axially extending pin 18 which is engaged in any one .7 of a series of vertically spaced Openings 19 provided in the rear end of the blade. It will be apparent that by engaging the pin in any one of the openings, the angle of the blade relatively to thehandle may be varied,

The primary object of my invention is to provide a tool for digging trenches in which to lay pipes, conduits or the like. 'In accordance with present practice a trench of about twelve inches is dug in which to receive a pipe of from two to three inches in diameter, thus entailing an extra amount of labor in the removalof the earth. A trench of this width is necessitated in view of the inches. 7 My object therefore is to provide a, tool. which may enable a'trench to be dug which will be no wider than the diameter of -width of the shovelused which is about nine the pipe or other article to be-laid. The tool may 7 furthermore be adjusted so that its --1ineal dimension coincides more nearly wlththe axis of the; handle when-the blade is lsed for digging; or the angle may be increased whentheblade is used to elevate earthfrom the bottom of the trench.
