NURSERY-CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 25, 1918.
Application filed November 24, 1917. Serial No. 203,709.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. COSTELLO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Great Falls, in the county of Cascade and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nursery-Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in nursery chairs and it is the principal object of the invention to provide a commode chair for use by infants, whereby all matter discharged will be received by the receptacle arranged beneath the same, thus, rendering the device sanitary and convenient for use.
Among other aims and objects of the invention may be recited, the provision of a device of the character mentioned with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production small, and efficiency and operation high.
Other objects Will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The improvements in the details and ar rangement of parts will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in connection with the specific description hereinafter contained, and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is dis-closed for the purpose of imparting a full understanding of the same.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown one of various possible embodiments of my invention Figure 1 is a vertical section through the improved device,
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section therethrough, and,
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same having a part shown in section.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Certain features and aims of this invention will be more readily understood if the following facts be borne in mind The proposed improvement, as hereinbe fore stated, has reference to what is commonly termed a nursery chair, particularly, a chair used by infants and small children while urinating and exuding from the bowels. The improvement resides in the provision of a nursery chair, which consists of a small chair, similar to the ordinary chair having a round hole in the seat thereof, under which a receptacle s placed. Due to the relative positioning of the opening in the seat and the receptacle arranged therebeneath, it *frequently occurs that in use, the urine flows around the seat of the chair instead of through the opening therein, as'intended. This is particularly true, when the child using the same is of the male species. In this latter case, the chair is next to useless for the reason that the urine invariably flows out onto the floor where the chair is placed. With my novelly constructed chair, the above outlined disadvantages are entirely eliminated and are among other advantageous features, attained in the constructions of the nature of that hereinafter described.
Having more particular reference tothe drawings, 1 represents the chair in its entirety, the seat 2 thereof being provided with an opening 3, the forward portion of which is open as at 4.
Arms 5 are secured to the opposite sides of the chair back and serve for obvious purposes. To one of the arms 5, there is swivelly secured, a table 6 having a depending concaved leg portion 7, which leg portion, is adapted to be received in the portion 4 of the opening 3 when the chair is being used by an infant. In this connection, it is to be noted that when the leg is in a position in the opening 3, the concaved portion thereof will be arranged adjacent the infant and further, that the lower extremity of the said leg will be arranged directly above or projected slightly into the receptacle 8 arranged beneath the said opening 3 in the seat.
It is to be understood, that the table 6 and its depending leg portion 7 may be formed of any suitable material, preferably metal which is coated with a suitable composition.
When using the improved chair, the table and leg portion 7 are swung into position adjacent the seat 2, the said leg portion 7 snugly fitting into the portion 4 of the opening 3 in the manner hereinbefore stated. Thus, when the infant is placed on the chair, its limbs will be separated by the depending leg 7, which, as stated, extends down to the receptacle beneath the chair seat. Thus, when the child urinates, the urine which would otherwise be directed out in front and onto the floor, flows up against the concaved surface of the said leg and is thereby directed into the receptacle, with the result,
" 1. ln a chair of the character described,
having opening-formed in the seat there-a he finer-7 pf, atable pivotally mou ted thereon, a de- PQDdiIlg guard carried ,ysaidtable and adapted fcrarrangeinent adjacent the openthe chair, at times.
2; In a chair of the character described, having pening in the seat inherent, e
table plvotally secured to the chair, and a depending cencavedyg'uard carried by said table and adaptedto be arranged adjacent the opening in these'at, at time-S.
In teeti niony whereof, I affix my signatnre I hereto.
7 WILL AM 1P. COSTELLO."
