Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM S. Burrow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riverside, in the county of Riverside and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Canteen-Mouthpieces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a bottle or canteen construction and particularly pertains toa special mouth provided therefor.
In pouring liquid from a bottle or canteen, or other small mouthed containers and especially when drinking from such a vessel, it is very inconvenient to satisfactorily obtain the contents from the container. This is due to the fact that the opening or bottle mouth is filled with the outgoing liquid and thus air is unable to enter the bottle to displace the liquid flowing therefrom. This action forms a partial vacuum in the bottle and retards the flow of the liquid. It is the object of thisinvention to provide a bottle mouth with suitable vent means to prevent the difficulty above described and to allow the liquid to flow readily and continuously from the container.
Another object of this invention is to provide the bottle mouth with a suitable lip shield which enables the drinker to drink from the bottle mouth with the same convenience that would be had when drinking from a cup or glass and at the same time prevent the spilling of the liquid.
Another object is to provide a bottle mouth of the above described character which is extremely simple in construction and may be readily fitted with a suitable bottle cap to close the mouth of the bottle as well as the vent opening.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective illustrating a bottle or canteen provided with the special mouth and showing a portion of the bottle as broken away.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of the bottle mouth and a portion of the bottle neck as seen in its inverted position and while a fluid is being poured therefrom.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of the canteen and shows it as fitted with a modified form of the bottle mouth.

may be of any desired construction, shape, or material and is shown as fitted in a suitable manner with a special mouth (5 which is illustrated in the drawing as being formed of thin sheet metal. It is likewise evident that the mouth might be formed integral with the body of the container and of a simi lar material whether metallic or vitreous.
The mouth is cylindrical in shape and formed with a threaded outer surface as indicated by the numeral 7. A shield memher 8 is formed integral with the cylindrical side wall and in the preferred form of the invention it is shown as being crescent shaped and covering substantially half the area of the mouth opening. The shield member, as particularly shown in Fig. 2, is conca-ved and thus is adapted to accommodate the upper lip of the drinker as he drinks from the opening 9 beneath the shield. A vent port 10 is formed through the cylindrical wall of the mouth-piece and at a point directly above and on the center line of the crescent-shaped shield member. This port is provided to allow air to flow into the body of the bottle as the liquid is forced therefrom, care being exercised to insure that the water line within the container does not lie above the port opening and thus seal the container.
Reference being had to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the bottle month there disclosed is quite similar to the preferred form of the invention as previously described, the difference being that the shield portion here consists of a straight upper part 11 which is formed integral with a beveled portion 12 lying upon a plane diagonal to the end of the mouth-piece. The vent hole 1a is formed through the wall 11 in this form of the device although it is evident that its action will be identical to the preferred disclosure.
The utility and operation of this device is evident as the vessel may be readily filled through the opening 9 and then closed with a suitable screw cap. When the bottle is to be used. the cap is removed and the mouth of the drinker placed with the edge of the cylindrical mouth wall between his lips and the shield portion against or adjacent the upper lip. As the bottle is tilted, the liquid will flow therefrom and will be displaced by an inflow of air through the vent hole provided for the purpose.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a container mouth-piece which is simple in a crescent-shaped concave lip'shield adapted construction and may be readily and conto partiallyobstructthe passage-Way through veniently used.
