u Application filed November 27, 1916. 3: Serial-Illo{133,835. I
To all whom it may concern: a w v 5 ,Be it known that I, GYnUs*-Wa- Emion, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county' ofJaeks'on and State of Missouri, have invented 'certa'in new and" useful Improvements in Check- Markers and I do declare the following to be a full,"cl ea'r,' andexactdescriptioniofthe may be formed fa-long one edge of' a 11 check inorder to properly identify the amount for which the check is drawn and thereby avoid uncertainty as to the amount of the check- In accomplishing this object I have provided a mechanical device embodying the improvement hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure I is a perspective view of the preferred embodiment of the invention, illustrating its use on a bank check.
Fig. II is an enlarged detail perspective of the device.
Fig. III is a transverse section thereof.
Fig. IV is a detail perspective of the preferred type of pointer.
Fig. V is a view of a check and its stub, showing the stub removed from the check body, and the edge portion of the check removed to form the amount identifying stub. Referring more in detail to the drawmgs:
1 designates the body of the marker which is preferably constructed of flat spring metal having a straight edge portion 2 of sufiicient length to extend over a check of ordinary size, and a guide member 3 which lies parallel with the straight edge portion 2 and is spaced therefrom so that a check may be received therebetween. The straight edge portion and back member are connected by an integral spring loop 4 that is adapted to hold the back and straight edge portions in their spaced relation, but to yield to enable a check to be gripped there between when the opposite members are pressed toward each other.
Th8 straight? age aporaen 2 is provided with ianlongitudinal .rib 5zwhich vserves'to stili eir-the member and'also to. form a. rail along which: asslide poin'ter 6 may travel, in order that' the pointer. may .be located over designated numerals along the :edge of the check-that isto be marked by the device. v Thev'slide 6 comprises: the arch 7 that overlies the rib and. is adapted for free sliding :movement therealong to properly place the pointer i on the numerals in mark- I ing=-the-amount of the check to which the device israpplieda i. v
-=FExtendingfromone edge of .the. arch 7 is an arm 8 that rides along the top of the body portion 2 and hasa P0111619 extending beyondsthe edge of :said. bodyportion to overlie a5 part of'theicheck,-so that when the check: isf pulled thereagainst a portion of the check is torn away to the contour of the point. ton-leavet a projection or :stub on and obviate possible loss to the drawer:
the. edge of the check, the arm 8 being provided with the handle member 10 whereby the pointer may be easily moved along the body portion 2. Extending from the end of the arch 7 opposite the arm 8 is a lip 11 that projects under a flange 12 on the edge of the body portion 2 and is spaced therefrom to provide the slot 13 within which the said lip may ride, the spacing of the flange from the body portion 2 being sufiicient to form a channel in which the lip may slide freely without loss of motion.
14 designates a check of a type especially adapted for use'with the marker containing my improvements, and which carries along and in position for indicating a particular numeral, that numeral is covered by the point 9 and cannot be seen by the user of the device. By providing the check with the column 16, the numerals of which are arranged correspondingly to those in'the row 15, the point 9 may be directed to any desired number in the column 16 and when in that position will overlie a corresponding number in the row 15, so thatwhen the edge of the check is torn away the numeral in the column 16 indicated by the point will be exposed on the stub 17 on the edge of the check.
Assuming the device to be constructed as described and to be used with a checkofthe character shown when the check is 'made out in the ordinarymunner the protecting device is placed OVGI',ih8I1bGdy;fpOl'tl0n',Z2, overlying the face of the check along one edge thereof, thewend of: ;the nheek abeing slipped between the:'body2p0trtion12,and back member 3: so that itherche'ck may bee-gripped slide 6 .is then fmove d1 along" the: check .until it comeszto the ifilvstznumeral of.- therammmt shown by the check, when 'thezpointelgislheld inplnce and the iedge'of rthecheckitornenway to form theizstubzl'i'. hen the istub'ris formed the pointer is; moved 111:0 overlie: Ethe next numeral of the ramountttofzthe checlc and the tearing vagain =takes;place,;@thisuoperation being repeated until the "fullramoimt ''-is shown on the stubs valong :the :mzrrgimbfithe check. 7
' Itis apparent thatea device cofzthis character may be carried in :a pocket .etche'ckbook if desired, but .in any event would require but a very small space; so :that' itzcansbei used for marking vpersonal -checks as well as! vouchers or the like.
Having thus desoribed my invention What "1., A check marker comprising a straight edge'mer'nber, having a longitudinal guide rib-and ;-,a-n redgeiflenge back-turned and spaced from the body of the member to form a groove andm pointerhaving an archediportionmovabIlealong 'thex rib and a lip m0vahle in the;groove andahavingi fri tionalucOn-tactmvith the lip, for-the; purpose setrferth.
