To all whom At-may concern.'
Be it known that ll, GUSTAF W. WENDrr LIUS, -a citizen of the. United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of 0hio, new and useful' Improvements in Folding Clothes-Racks';-and ll do hereby declare the' following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others 'skilled'fin' the-art to which it appertains to make'and use the same.
rllhis invention relates to new and useful' i improvements in a folding clothes rack and cost.
one of its objects is the provision of a device of this charactenwhich rable and ecient,
and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low l Another object of invention Yis to provide a pair of vertically extending standards, having folding connecting arms hinged to the upper and lower ends thereof to provide a clothes rack and adapted to be olded when not in use.
A further object of this invention is to provide the standardswith grooves upon 7 their inner faces to receive the connectlng arms when the device is in a folded or collapsed position to provide a compact article which may be Stored away in a considerably small space. 1
A still further object of this` invention isupper (con-` -necting arm for holding said arm rigid to to'provide means securedto the prevent the device from collapsing when in use. i
With these and other objects in view as apparent as the description proceeds, tain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement -ofparts as will be hereinafter more fully described vand claimed.
For a complete understanding ofi my ining, in which vention, reference -is to be -had to fthe -following descriptionand accompanying draw- Figure 1 is a front` elevation partly. in section,4 of a folding clothes rack! constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same Fig. 3 is a fragmentary lvertical sectional Speication of Letters 1"atent` Application mea nay 27; 191e. serial no. 100,265.
`operatewi`th the feet 3 in shall be simple, du-,
' a lug 16 carried by the invention consists in ceron'the line 4-.4 of Fig. 1. have invented certain Referring in detail tothe drawing, the numerals 1 and 2 indicate a pair of vertical standards having suitable feet 3' secured to their outer lower ends and transversely extending strips 4'secured'within recess portions 5 formed on the inner lower faces of the standards 1 and 2. Formedon each end of the strips 4 are suitable feet 6 which cosupporting the vertical standards. Each ofthe standards land 2 is provided their inner faces as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3. A lower connecting arm 8 is hinged together intermediate its ends as illustrated at 9 and has its outer `ends secured within the-grooves 7 of the standards Patented Tune 119 191%..
with grooves 7 nponfv 1 and 2 adjacent their lower ends by means l of hinges .10.
hinged together illustrated at 12 cured within the 1 and The connecting arm 11 is intermediate its ends as grooves 7 of the standards `2 adjacent the upper ends by means 14 which is provided depending slot 15in its free end to receive arm 11. .The strip 14 is provided with up,- wardly extending notches 17 for an engagement with lugs 18 upon each of the sections ofthe arm 11A for preventing the sections from folding intermediate their ends when in use byy a hinge 12.` rllhe strip 14 is constructed from flexible metal, whlch will permit it to be bent laterally of the device so that the lugs may be readily disengaged fromv the notches therein before the stri is swung upon its pivot.. -en it is desired to fold this device, the strip 14'is detached from the lugs 16 and 18 by simply graspingv the free end of the member 14 and thrusting the same upwardlyv and outwardly until it is relieved from its connection with the stud 16 and by urging it downwardly it is relieved from its connection with the stud-18 direction of eachother standards 1 and 2 in the direction of each and has its outer ends se-v the other sectionof the I whereby the arms 11 and 8 may. fold in the and by moving the other, the arms will move within the grooves 7 providing a compact article as clearly illustrated'in Fig. 3. Secured to the standard 1 is a hook 19 adapted to engage an eye 20 carried by the standard 2 for holding the standards 1 and 2 together when the device is in a collapsed position. V
lSecured to the arm 11 are a plurality of eye-bolts 21 whichv pivotally support hooks 22 for supporting clothing to the upper arm 11 whenlthe device is in use. The hooks 22 being secured to the arm 11 by eye-bolts 21 allow the hooks 22 to swing about their pivots when the device is in a folded or collapsed position as clearly illustrated in Fig.
3 which will not interfere with the folding lor collapsing. of the device. Secured to each of the standards 1 and 2 upon the outer faces thereof are a plurallty of hooks 23 which may be employed in supporting clothing s 1 and 2.-
and other articles to the standar From the/foregoing'description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,
it will benoted that a device has been provided which will efficiently support clothes when 1n an operative position and which may be readily collapsed to be stored away.
in a considerable small space when not in the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what ll4 claim is A folding clothes rack comprising a pair of vertical standards each rovided on the inner face with a longitudinally extending groove, a pair of supporting feet secured to the lower end of each standard on the outer and inner face thereof, a lower connecting arm consisting of sections having their inner ends hinged together and the outer end of each section hinged to the rear wall of the groove of each standard, an upper arm consisting of sections hinged together at the inner ends thereofand havin their outer ends hinged to the rear wall o each standard adjacent the upper end thereof, a brace rod pivotally secured to one section of the upper supportlng arm and adapted to be removably attached to the other section of said arm to prevent collapsing of the standards 'with relation to each other, and means carried by one Istandard and adapted to engage suitable means carried by the other standard for holding the standards in collapsed position. t
1n testimony whereof I affix my signature in vpresence of two witnesses.
