This is a division of my pending applica tion for patent for a machine for finishing and cool ng stereotype plates, Serial No. 11110343, filed A ril 6,1906.

Amohg the objects of the invention,

It is to observed that on account of the incline of the run-way and on account of the fact that it is provided with antifriction devices shown as in the form of a series of rollers 25, no positive feedin mechanism and no driving device for feedin the plates or other blanks is necessary. he incline of the bed is such that the plates are readily fed down by gravity when they rest freely on therollcrs and if the rollers are held in stationery position and, prevented from rotatin the plates are held and do not slide along the stationary surfaces of the rollers.

Both ,tiese passages are connected by pipes 6 with a supply pipe 7 having a valve or cook 8. With this cock is connected an arm 9, link 10 and lever 11. This lever is pivoted on the frame and is provided with dogs 12 located normally in the path of motion of a plate entering the cooler. \Vhen the plate asses along the rollers and engages these dogs, it moves the lever in opposition to the force of a spring 13 which normally holds the valve 8 closed. This opens the valveso as to permit the cooling fluid to enter both passages 3 and 5 and cool both sides of the plate as long as the plate ismains in :cnga ement with the dogs.

The lever moves in opposition to the spring 20, and the plate in the cooler slides out on the table 6 against a stationar stop 21. It will be seen, therefore, that one plate remains in the cooler until another plate is finished and delivered into a position to enter the cooler. If the operator de sires to allow a plate to leave the cooler before another plate is delivered to it or if no more plates are to be delivered, e can manipulate the lever 18 by a hand-operated slide The water or other cooling fluid applied to the plates is collected in a receptacle 23 and may be discharged in any desired way.
The broad combination of a stereotype printing plate finishing mechanism and a cooling device is claimed in my ori inal application previously referred to, his divisional application being filed in pursuance to a requirement of the Patent ()ilice that the details of the cooling mechanism be specifically claimed in a divisional application.
Vhile I have illustrated and described certain preferred embodiments of the in vcntion, I am aware of the fact that many modifications can be made therein by any person Sklllfid in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore I do not wish to be limited to all the details of construction herein shown and described, but what I do claim is z- 1. The combination with a stereotype plate cooling device having means for applying'a cooling fluid to the surface of a curved plate, of meansfor feeding a semicylindrical plate longitudinally to the cooling device.
2. The combination with a stereotype plate cooling device having means for ap lying a cooling fluid to the surface of a curved plate, of means for feeding a plate longitudinally through the cooling device with a dwell of the late therein.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a frame having an in clined bed, a series of anti-friction rollers mounted along said bed and adapted to support stereotype plates and feed them by gravity, a cooler located in the path of the plates through the bed, a receiving table located at the end of the bed and provided with rollers, and a stop at the end of said receiving table.
25. In a device of the character described, the combination of an arch, meansgi'or intro ducing a cooling fluid into said arch, and means operating upon the adwincc of a plate into said arch for automatically turning on a cooling fluid,
26. In a device for cooling stereotype printing plates, the combination of means for guiding a stereotype plate to move lon git-.ndinally along an inclined path and in dependent means controlled by the plate for forcing a cooling fluid against the plate.
2.7. .In a device for cooling stereotype plates, the combiinition of means for guiding a stereotype plate along a straight path, means for forcing a cooling fluid toward the plate, and means in position to be controlled by the plate as it moves along said path for turning on said cooling fluid.
28. 1n a device for cooling stereotype printing plates, the combination of means for discharging a cooling fluid, means for guiding a stereotype plate longitudinally along a path over said discharging means, and means in position to hc operated by the plate as it moves along said path for controlling said discharging meansv 29- lll a device for cooling stereotype printing plates, the combination of a water supply valve, a cooling saddle, means for guiding a plate along a continuous path to and from the saddle, and means for keeping said valve open when the plate is over the saddle, and for closing it at all other times.
30. In a device of the character described, the combination of a device for applying a cooling fluid to the surface of a curved stereotype plate, and means for supporting and guiding said curved plate by its straight edgis to said cooling device.
31. In a device of the character t'lescrihcd, the combination with a frame, and a linislr ing means supported thereby, of a series of rollers carried by said frame adjacent to the discharge end of the finishing means for moving the date along the frame after it is discharged Tom the finishing means, means located over said series of rollers for spray inc the plate while it is located on said ro lore, and means adapted to be engaged by the plate during its motion along the rollers for turning the water on and for thereafter turning it oil.

In a device of the character described, the combination with a frame, of a finishing mechanism mounted on the frame, guiding means carried by the frame for supporting and guiding a plate from the finishing mech anism, a cooling arch arranged in the path of the platc along said guiding means, means in position to be actuated by the plates as they enter said arch for turning on cooling water, and means adapted to be operated by the plates as they leave the arch for turning of? the cooling water.

In a dc vice of the character described, the combination with a cooling fluid supply valve, of means for guiding a plate to move along a, straight path adjacent thereto, and means controlled bv the plate for automatically locking the valve to prevent the dis charge of fluid whenever the plate is out of position to be cooled.

In a device of the character described, the combination with a supply valve for cooling fluid, of means for guiding a plate along a path adjacent thereto, and means controlled by the plate for automatically unlocking the valve so that it can open when the plate moves into position for being cooled.

38. A method of preparing stereotype printing plates which consists in finishing the plates, feeding them in a straight. path, and while in position in line with their position while being finished, cooling them.
39. A, method of preparing stereotype printing plates which consists in finishing the plates, feeding them forward in a straight path, and cooling them on the im side and outside simultaneously while they are in position in line with the position in which they were finished.
40. A method of preparing stereotype printing plates which consists in finishing the plates, feeding them forward in a straight path, and cooling them on the inside and outside simultaneously while they are in position in line with the position in which they were finished.
41. A method of preparing stereotype printing plates which consists in locating said plates on an incline and finishing them while in that ppsition, feeding said plates forward by gravity in line with the position in which they are while being finished, and cooling them while in the position parallel with that in which they were finished.
42. A method of preparing curved stereotype printing plates which consists in finishing the plates, feeding them forward in a straight path parallel to the pOSllIlWl in which they are located while being finished, and while still in that position, spraying water upontthe plates to cool them.
43. A method ofpreparing curved stereotype printing plates which consists in finishing the plates, feeding them forward in a straight path parallel to the position in which they are located while being finished and, while still in that position, stopping them in a position beyond that in which they were finished, and cooling them while still in that position;
44. A methdd'of'preparing curved stereotype printing plates whicliconsists in feeding them along in ii straight path, stopping them in a certain position, finishing them while stopped, feeding them forward, and cooling them while in stationary position.

A method of preparing curved stereotype printing plates which consists in feeding them along in a straight path, stopping them in a certain position, finishing them while stopped, feeding them forward, cooling them whilcin stationary positiomfinally starting them forward again, shutting oil the cooling means, and stopping the plates in an inclined position from which they may he removed by hand.

A method of pre aring curved stereo type printing plates w ich consists in feeding them forward by gravity to a finishing device, stopping them therein, shaping the plates while in the finishing device, removing the stopping means and allowing the plates to be fed forward out of the finishing device by gravity- 47. A method of preparing stereotype plates which consists in finishing the plates,
.feeding them from the finishing device to a cooling device, and cooling them thereby.
