Description

W. A. HATCH. PICTURE moum'ma. APPLICATlOH FILED AUG.25. 1917- Patented June 11, 1 918 WILLIAM A. HATCH, or CLEVELAND, OHIO.
PICTURE-MOUNTING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Iatented June 11, 1918.
Application filed August 25, 1917. Serial No. 188,104.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. HATCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at 7 33 Prospect Ave, city of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Picture-Mountings, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
This invention relates to picture mountings and more particularly to that class in common use by commercial photographers today for mounting photographs, without he use of adhesive, in an ornamental folder containing an insert which is to constitute the frame for the picture.
' According to the scheme of my invention not only is the need of a separate border sheet eliminated but four separate corner clips well. My idea comprehends the use of small cutout clips formed integral with the overlay and adapted to exercise the same function as that of the separate clips. Besides, I have contrived to out a tongue from the underlay which could be so inserted through a suitable slit in the overlayas to enable it to be positioned upon the overlay and under each of the integral clips so as to constitute in fact the border sheet. In this manner it has been possible for me to obtain a three colored alternate arrangement about the picture with the use of only two sheets. In other words, I have succeeded in attaining the same result by the use of two pieces which was heretofore accomplished by the use of seven. More than that,.I dispense with the pasting operation whereby the clips and border sheet were till now usually held in place.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically de. scribed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
Adverting to the drawing:
Figure I is a plan view of a complete picture mounting embodying my invention, the same being shown inclosed in a suitable protective folder.
Fig. II is a corresponding view of the folder by itself.
Fig. III is a plan view of one part of the.
actual mounting, being what is known as the overlay.
Figs. IV and V are sections on lines IVIV and V-V respectively of Fig. III.
Fig. VI is a plan view of another part of the mounting, in fact the so-called underlay.
Fig VII is a perspective view of Fig. VI showing one portion in a relatively altered position.
Fig. VIII is a plan view of a photograph such as might be mounted by means of my invention.
A folder usually of a rather dark color consist of a rectangular backing 1 and a pair of lateral side flaps 2 and 3 respectively.
Adapted to be affixed in any suitable manner to the back 1 is an underlaysheet 4:,
usually formed of card board and of somewhat lighter color than that of the folder, at all events it is preferably of such color as to afford a contrast as against the color of the holder. It is also preferably somewhat but very slightly smaller in size than the back 1. This underlay d is according to my invention slit along a U shaped line 5 whereby to form a tongue 6 for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
Adapted to overlie the underlay 4 and of a shade similarly to afford a color contrast therewith is an overlay sheet 7. The sheet 7 is likewise to be somewhat smaller than the sheet 4 sothat an edged portion of the latter appears to view all the way around. The overlay 7 is provided at a point laterally across one end, corresponding substantially to the line of commencement of the tongue 6, with a slit 8. The overlay sheet 7 is furthermore provided at four places with angularly related slits 9 such that four corner clips 10 are formed which are capable of being slightly flexed out of the plane of the sheet of which they constitute an integral part. It will be seen that the two upper of the slits 9 intersect with the slit 8 and the width of the entire opening thus formed slightly exceeds the width of the tongue 6 measured across the line of its inception in order to enable the insertion of the tongue therethrough in a manner to be presently explained.
It is furthermore understood, indeed it is apparent upon inspection of Fi III, that the length of the tongue 6 is such that it may occupy a position in which it underlies all four of the corner clips 10 while overlying an area 11 of the sheet 7 between such clips. In this manner I am enabled to achieve a double alternate color contrast by means of only two sheets. Finally, a photograph 12, which is again to be pre sumed as affording a color contrast with the tongue 6 and possibly also with the overlay 7 is out to such a size that it will be slightly smaller than the exposed portion of the tongue 6 and still be capable of having its corners inserted through the slots 9 and snugly held in place underneath the foulcorner clips without requiring that it be pasted or otherwise secured in proper position. Owing to the slightly reduced size of the photog'aph compared to the size of the tongue the latter affords an additional border in color contrast therearound and I am therefore enabled to achieve a triple color contrast with a composite insert for a protecting folder including only two pieces. The facility of assemblage is greatly increased and the expense of manufacture greatly reduced.
1. As a new article of manufacture, a picture -mounting comprising an overlay sheet provided with a slot, an underlay sheet fashioned with a flexible tongue adapted to be inserted through said slot, and means for securing the free end of said tongue to said overlay sheet.
2 As a new article of manufacture, a picture mounting comprising a backing, a flexible sheet associated therewith and fashioned with a series of angular-1y related slits whereby to form integral clips adapted to embrace correspondingly spaced portions of a picture and another sheet of greater dimensions overall than said first mentioned sheet and provided with a tongue passed in different directions through two of said slits. p p
3.,As a new article of manufacture, a picture mounting comprising a pair of sheets, one of said sheets being fashioned with a pair of slots and the other with a tongue extended in one direction through one of said slots and in the opposite direction through the other of said slots.
l. As a new article of manufacture, a picture mounting comprising a pair of sheets of diflerent color and size, one of said sheets being fashioned with a slot and the other with a tongue extended therethrough, said tongue being flexible, and means for securing said sheets together.
5. As a new article of manufacture, a picture mounting comprising a pair of sheets, one of said sheets being fashioned with a slot and the other with a tongue ex tended therethrough, said tongue being flexible, said first mentioned sheet being provided with an additional slot adapted to receive the end of said tongue whereby to bind the sheets together.
6. As a new article of manufactu're a picture mounting comprising a folder, an insert therein adapted to support a picture and including in its structure an underlay and an overlay, one of said last mentioned parts being provided with a slot and the other with a tongue insertible therethrough whereby portions of one such part are adapted to underlie and overlie the other part respectively, and means for securing the free end of said tongue. 7
7. As a new article of manufacture, a picture mounting comprising an insert adapted to support a picture and including in its structure an underlay of one color and an overlay of another color, one of said last mentioned parts being provided with slots and the other with a tongue insertible tlierethrou'gh so as to interlock said sheets, the arrangement being such that one sheet has a portion both above'an d below the other and appearing to view at points separated by such other for the purpose specified.
8. As a new article of manufacture, a picture mounting com-prising an overlay sheet previded near one end with a slot, an underlay sheet fashioned with a relatively movable tongue adapted to be inserted through said slot, the other endof said overlay sheet being likewise provided with a slot for securing the free end of said tongue, said sheets affording a c'olor contrast, the arrangement being such that an edge of said underlay sheet appears to View between an edge of said underlay sheet, and an edge of said tongue for the purpose specified, V
