Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 14, 1917. Serial No. 154,846.
tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to'electric circuit changing devices coming generally under the head of push button snap switches and in particular to a switching mechanism of the class named by which one or more circuit terminals may be positively and quickly placed in electrical connection with certain contact members, or else held disengaged therefrom, the whole being of comparatively simple construction and operating with certainty and precision. Other objects of the invention will be set forth in the following detailed description of the same.
To attain the desired end, the invention consists in the construction, arrangement and operation of parts hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings is illustrated one type of switching mechanism in which the invention is embodied, and in which the separate parts of the improve ment are designated by suitable reference numerals in each of the views.
Figure 1 represents aside elevation of the working parts of the mechanism;
Fig.2 is a similar view of the said parts in another position;
' Fig. 3 is an end elevation, partly in section, of the shouldered disk and stop device; Fig. 4 is a plan view of the mechanism assembled in a casing;
Fig. 5 is a front elevation of'the same partly broken away to disclose the contact members; and
Fig. 6 is a v1ew in section of the device the same are operated b the push button.
Like numerals of re erence indicate like parts in all the views.
Referring particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the preferably metallic frame supporting the working parts and ordinarily having depending side portions in which the axle 8 and bushings 8 and 79 are mounted, the said frame servlng to support a manually actuated device, as the push button 2. On the bushing 78 is rigidly mounted a plate 9 supporting by means of attachments 10 a movable three-point switching mechanism 50 comprising contact members 51, 52, 53, preferably spaced ninety degrees apart.
To the said bushing is also securely affixed a duplex stop disk 20 having slots formed by oppositely disposed shoulders 21, 22, 23, 24, projecting alternately from each Patented June a, was.
side of the disk in the planes of the outer i faces thereof, which disk also carries a stud 25. Another disk .30, having cams 31, 32, 33, 34, and a longinwardly projecting pin 42 and shorter similarly disposed pins 41, 43, 44, 1s rigidly fastened to another bushing 79 independently rotatable on the axle 8.
The opposite ends .of a helical spring 14 encircling the bushings are respectively attached to the stud 25 and to the outer end of the pin 42 adjacent to the disk 30, which spring normally serves to hold the two parts 25 and 42 so as to abut each other. A stop or -detent bar 5 works in the depending sides of the frame 1 and is made with a slot to engage and to be reciprocated by the cams of the disk 30, at the right hand thereof, and it also has a depending part adapted to move alternately in and out of one of the slots 21, 22, 23, 24 of the stop disk 20 at the left hand portion of the same.
The lower part of the push button 2 is attached to a cross arm 3 which works vertically on rods 11 depending from the frame 1 and is normally held in an upward relation by sprin s 12. An actuating device, as a dog 4, is pivoted at 6 to the push button and held so that the lower portion of the same will project inwardly to respectively engage the pins 41, 42, 43, 44 by means'of a spring 7.
The whole device is preferably inclosed in a porcelain or other dielectric casing 13 having a plurality of terminals, as 71, 2, 73 respectively electrically connected with the stationary contact members 61, 62, 63 which are preferably spaced ninety degrees apart.
In operation, the parts being in the position illustrated in Fig. 1, the depending projection of the stop or detent bar 5 will be engaged at one side of the same with the slot 21 of the shouldered duplex stop disk 20, and the slot of the detent bar at the other end thereof will be engaged with the cam disk 30 between h c 31 and 32,- Upon the depression of the push button 2, the cam disk 30 will be partially rotated as hereinbelow described, and the spring 14 attached to the adjacent lug 25 and pin 42 thereby put under tension, inasmuch as the duplex stop disk 20 is held immovable by the detent stop 5, which rotation will cause the cam 31 to force the detent stop to the ri ht hand and to thereby withdraw the depen ing part of the said detent .out of the slot 21 of the duplex disk 20, thus allowing the spring 14 to turn the freed duplex disk 20 until its next rearward shouldered stop 24 is engaged with the bar 5, and the lug 25 is engaged with the long pin-42 of the cam disk, thereby stopping the further movement of the latter. -By this movement of the parts a quarter turn of both the duplex disk 20 and also of the cam disk 30 is made. 11
The cam disk and duplex'disk now having each made a quarter of a revolution, the
slot 21 of the duplex stop disk has moved to the (position shown in Fig. 2 and the depen ing part of the detent bar 5 is engaged with the slot 24 of the latter, while the slot at theright hand of the detent bar is engaged with the cam 34 of the cam disk 30.
Upon ,nbw depressing the push button again almost far enough to release the duplex stop disk again, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the dog 4 pivoted to the said button at 6 and held in'position by spring 7 will engage the pin 44 of the cam disk and-thereby partially rotate the same. Upon a further depression of the button, the cam disk will again make a quarter of a turn and the duplex stop disk will be released and make another quarter of a revolution; whereupon a subsequent depression of the push button will engage the dog 4 and the pin 43 of the cam disk, and so on, both of the-said disks advancing in the same direction a onequarter of a revolution at each depression of the push button, the duplex disk 20 being stopped alternately by the engagement first of a shoulder on one side thereof and then by a shoulder on the opposite side ofthe' same with the depending portion of the detent bar. v
The switch, preferably made with the three- point contact members 51, 52, 53, is shown in Fig. 5 with the said movable contact members respectively engaged with the stationary contact members 61, 62, 63 of the terminals 71, 72, 73. The terminal 71 may be that'of the circuit of the main line, while the terminals 72 and 73 may be those of other circuits. When the switch 'is in the position illustrated. in Fig.- 5 the contact members 51, 52, 53'are respectively electri- .cally connected with the three terminals 71,
72, 73 through the intermediate contact members 61, 62,63.
Upon depressing the push button 2 the contact members 51 and 52 will be electriaaeaeee cally connected with the terminals 72 and 7 3. A subsequent depression of the button will serve to electrically connect the contact members 51 and 53 with the terminals 73 and 71, while a further depression of the button will electrically connect the contact members 52 and 53 with the terminals 71 and 72. The movable contact member is thus advanced in such a manner that the terminal 71will be in electric connection with the T terminals 72 and 73 at one one-quarter movement; and so that only the terminals 72 and 73.; and so that the respective pairs of terminals 72 and 73, 71 and 73, and 71 and 72 will be electrically connected at the other three-quarter revolutions of. the said movable contact member.
- It will be observed that the cams of the cam member, upon being actuated serz'atim by the depression of the push button, advance with a step by step movement, and by the consequent throw of the detent stop bar the movable three-point contact member and duplex disk become released, the latter parts moving in unison and synchronously with the termination of the said step movement, the parts being then held in a stationary relation byv the detent bar. Each advance movement of the cam puts the helical spring under tension which latter causes the movable contact member aiid duplex" disk to rotate until stopped by the detent bar, rear ward movement of the said movable parts being stopped by thelug of the duplex disk 10 0 and the long pin of the cam disk. By the use of the movable and stationary threepoint contact members one of the latter may e put in electrical connection with either or both, or with neither, of the other two stationary contact members at will. 7
I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to persons skilled in the art.
