GEORGE 1?. BROWN, OF HELENA, MONTANA.
' BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 191$.
Application filed August 28, 1917. Serial No. 188,617.
v To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. BROWN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at elena, in the county of Lewis and Clark and State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Box, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to boxes or containers, and aims to provide a novel and improved box folded from a blank of paper, stiff cloth, cardboard or other suitable material, and capable of use as a suitcase or the like.
It is the object of the invention to provide a box of the nature indicated which is composed of two hingedly connected parts which can be swung open and closed, and constructed in a novel manner.
A further object of the invention is the provision in a box of the nature indicated, of a novel handle for carrying the box and also serving as a latch for holding the box closed, novel means being employed for as- 1sjembling the handle with the parts of the It is also the object of the invention to provide a container of the nature indicated which can be inexpensively manufactured, and which will be thoroughly practical and eflicient in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise cmbodimentof the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimedwithout departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view of the box or suitcase.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one corner of one part of the box.
Fig. 3 is a similar view of one corner of the other part of the box.
Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a plan view which the box is formed.
Figs. 6 and 7 are plan views of the two straps of the handle.
The box comprises the opposite ide Wal of the blank from 1 and 2 preferably of elongated or rectangular form, and having their adjacent edges connected by a bottom wall or web 3, the fold line between the bottom and side walls 2 serving as a hinge connection between the parts. The two parts or sections of the box are provided with the respective end walls 4 and 5 united with the ends of the side walls 1 and 2, and top walls 6 and 7 are united with the edges of the side walls 1 and 2, respectively, remote from the bottom wall 3. The end, bottom and top walls extend at right angles from the side walls to ward the opposite side wallsof the respective parts or sections, and the ends of the top walls 6 and 7 have the flaps 8 overlapping the respective end walls 4 and 5, and provided with T-heads 9 engagedinwardly through openings 10 in said end walls, to lock said tabs to the end walls, thereby holding the top and end walls in place relatively at the respective corners. The ends of the bottom wall 3 are provided with similar flaps 8' overlapping the end walls 4 and provided with T-heads 9 engaging inwardly through openings 10 in said end walls, whereby the side wall 1 with its end walls 4, bottom wall 3 and top wall 6 provide the box proper, while the side wall 2 and its top wall 7 and end walls 5 provide the cover hingedly connected with the bottom wall 3 to open and close the box similar to a suitcase. The flaps 8 and 8 preferably overlap the outer sides of the respective end walls, with the T-heads inserted inwardly through the openings, thereby rendering the corners of the box rigid and holding them together. The box proper or body is adapted to snugly receive the cover, whereby to retain the contents therein, and the end walls 4 of the body are provided at their edges with inturned flaps 11 overlapping the inner sides thereof and covering the heads 9 and 9', the end walls 5 of the cover fitting against the flaps 11 within the body.
In order to attach or anchor one part of the handle'to the body, the upper ends of the flaps 11 have tabs 12 extending therefrom underneath the top wall 6 or overlapping the inner side of said top wall and projecting toward one another. These tabs 12 have openings 13, and a handle strap 14 extends through openings 15 provided in the top wall 6 near the ends thereof and between the tabs The intermediate porti n f he strap 1 1 is on the exterior, while the termi- "strap extending outwardly through the openings 13 and having heads 16 between said tabs and top wall 6, thereby anchoring the terminals of the handle strap 14; to the tabs 12 to prevent said strap from tearing loose. The strap 14 can slide through the openings 13 and 15, whereby the strap can be moved flat against the top wall 6 the heads 16 moving toward the ends of the body, but when the intermediate portion of the strap is moved away from the top wall 6, for grasping the handle by the hand, the
, terminals of the strap will he slid away from the ends of the body, their movement being limited by the heads 16.
The handle includes a second strap 17 having its terminals extending through openings 18 in the top wall 7 of the cover, the intermediate portion of the strap 17 being outermost, and the terminals being pro vided at the inner side of the top wall 7 with Theads 19. This strap 17 can be moved flatly against the top wall 7, like the strap 141, and when the box is closed, the intermediate portion of the handle strap 17 can be raised through an elongated slot 20 provided in the top wall 6 between the openings 15, thus bringing the strap 17 up against the strap 14:, to provide a handle for conveniently lifting and carrying the box or suitcase. The two straps or parts of the handle are connected to the body and cover of the box, thereby distributing the strain, and furthermore, the strap 17 in extending upwardly through the slot 20, will serve as a latch for holding the box closed, since the box cannot be opened until the strap 17 is forced downwardly through the slot 20.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A box having top and end walls, said end walls having portions underlapping the top wall, and a handle strap engaging through said top wall and anchored to said portions.
2. A box having top and end walls, the end walls having tabs underlapping the top wall, said top wall and tabs having open- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the ings, and a handle strap inserted inwardly through the openings of the top wall and through the openings of the tabs, and provided with portions anchoring it to said tabs.
3. A box having top and end walls, the end walls having tabs underlapping the top wall, the top wall and tabs having openings, and a handle strap having its terminals extending inwardly through the openings of the top wall and outwardly through the openings of the tabs, said terminals having portions between said tabs and top wall for anchoring them to said tabs. 1
4:. A box embodying top and end walls, the end walls having flaps folded inwardly against the ends, said flaps having tabs underlapping the top wall, and a handle an ehored to said tabs.
5. A box embodying top and end walls, the end walls having flaps folded inwardly against the ends, said flaps having tabs underlapping the top wall, and a handle strap having its terminals extending through the top wall and tabs and anchored to said tabs.
6. A box embodying sections hinged together and adapted to telescope, the one in to the other, top and end walls for each section, the end walls of one section having portions underlapping the top wall thereof, a handle strap passing through the top wall and anchored to said portions, the said top wall having a longitudinal slot therein, and a handle secured to the other section and passing through the slot.
7. A box embodying sections hinged together and adapted for telescopic engagement, top and end walls for each section, the end. walls of one section having portions underlapping the top wall thereof, a handle strap passing through the top wall and anchored to said portions, and an element secured to the other section for holding the sections in telescopic engagement.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, have hereto aflixecl my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE F. BROWN.
