SPARK-ARRESTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28, 1918..
Application filed October 4, 1917. Serial No. 194,740.
To all whom t may concern.
Be it known that I, ALBERT EDMUND HUD- soN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Calgary, in the Province of Alberta and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark-Arresters, of which the following is the specification.
This invention relates to improvements in spark arresters, particularly adapted for use on locomotive boilers and is of that type in which baffles or ldeectors are located in the smoke box of a locomotive boiler, and in the path of the products of combustion from the furnace, so as to intercept and deflect the cinders from their course while passing through the smoke box to the atmosphere. As the cinders or sparks travel at great velocity, their coming in contact with the baffles or defiectors changes their course, and by repeated deiiections the sparks are crumbled or extinguished and retarded sufficiently to permit the cinders to burn themselves out before reaching the atmosphere, thus effectively destroying the sparks and eliminating all fire hazard.
Further objects of the invention are to effectively destroy the spark without impairing the draft and efliciency of the boiler, to so construct the arrester, that it may be readily installed, and removed from the smoke box of the boiler, to permit of each bafie plate of the arrester being individually removable, so that t'may be easily replaced by a new one when found necessary, and further, to permit of the several parts being capable of ready inspection and adapted to better perform the functions required of them.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists essentially of the improved construction particularly described and set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings forming pari; of the same. l
In the drawings;
Figure 1 is a fragmentary longitudinal section of a locomotive boiler showing the improved spark arrester installed therein.
Fig. 2 is a sectional end elevation of the boiler showing the location of the baffle plates of the spark arrester.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective View of one of the bafle plate supporting members.
which is located in the smoke box B in front of the tube plate C, the said wall extending downwardly and partially across the smoke box, being provided with an offset portion 11, which is designed to lie in a substantially horizontal plane, the said offset portion terminating in a vertically disposed flange 12, which forms with the inner wall of the lower portion of the smoke box a passage way 13 through which the products of combustion from the furnace pass.
A. tapered conduit 14 is located between the bottom of the smoke box B andthe offset plate 11 and the exhaust steam is designed to pass through this conduit and thence through the conduits 15 and 16 located immediately below the smoke stack 17.
A screen 18 extends around the edge of the offset plate 11 and terminates at the inner wall of the smoke box B, the several parts so far enumerated being the facsimile of those described in my United States application No. 109,917, iiled July 18th, 1916; these parts are not deemed to form a part of the present invention and are only described for the purpose of thoroughly explaining the location of the baffles and the manner in which the same will arrest the sparks passing through'the smoke box to the atmosphere.
In front of the flange 12 and screen 18 a plurality of angularly disposed deflectors or baffle plates 19 are located, each of the deflectors or baffle plates being carried by a rod or bar 20 which is adapted to engage with the notches 21 in the longitudinally extending carrier bars 22.
It will be seen by reference to Fig. 2 that some of the longitudinal carrier ars 22 are rigidly attached to the inner wall of the smoke box, while others are arranged in pairs on opposite sides of the vertical supports 23. The baffle plates 19 are arranged in a series of superimposed rows each staggered relatively to the others and the baffle plates are made in three sections so that they can be readily positioned in the smoke box B.
'Ihe bars 20 are thus supported at the ends in the notches 21 of the longitudinally extendingcarrier bars 22 and these notches are angularly disposed so that tortuous passage ways extend upwardly between the bafile plates. v Y
ln assembling the arrester the side longitudinally extending carrier bars 22 are se cured to the inner wall of the smoke box B and-the intermediate carrier bars 22 are ar.- ranged in pairs on each side ot the supports 23. The bars carrying the baille plates 19 alf@ 110W- engaged at the ends with lthe notches 2l in the bars 22 and each section of finto contact w-ith'the. baille plates 19, the oppositie row-e 0i which. areansularly disposed relatively to each other.I
On the products of combustion passing upwardly through the tortuous passage ways between the balli@ Plates the YSparks mprlg@y on the angularly disposed plates and so bef cOIne extinguished. The baille platesl 1,9 are preferably made of screening, the mesh. of which will depend to a large extent on the fuel being used.
From this description it will be seen that plates of which are readily removable and can be removed with a minimum of time and labor, the cost of installation being extremely low and the several parts being arranged or ready inspection.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely differentembodiments of my invention within the scope of the claim constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
That I claim as my invention is:
In a spark arrester, a plurality 0i' pairs of uprights, a plurality of spaced cross pieces connecting the pairs of uprights, the upper edges of the cross pieces being notched, the notches of adjacent pieces being oppositely inclined, and baille plates having bars, the bars adapted to t into and be carried by the notches.
ln witness whereof- I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT EDMUND HUDSON.
