CAR-LOCK FOR MINE-ELEVATORS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SERAFINQ GALLI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Breezy Hill, in the county of Crawford and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Locks for Mine-Elevators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which -it appertains to make and use the same.
a One object of my invention is to provide a locking means for mine car elevators which will eltectively secure the cars on the elevator while the latter is moving upwardly or downwardly, the arrangement being such that as a car passes onto the elevator, it releases the locking means so that the latter is automatically applied to hold the car.
A further object is to provide novel construction whereby the passage of one car from the elevator and another onto the same is necessary before the lock will be applied.
A still further object is to provide a pair of dogs operatedautomatically by projectionoi the locking block, said dogs gri iping the axles of the car to hold them; against possible shifting. 1 t With the foregoing general objects in view, the invention resides inthe novel features of construction and unique combinations ofparts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptivematter being supplemented by. the accompanying drawings which form a part of thisspecilication andin which w Figure 1 is a top plan view of a mine elevator equipped with the invention;

In the drawings above briefly described, the numeral 1 designates a mine car elevator consisting of an upper section 2 carrying the rails3, a lower section l, anda suitable supporting structure 5 hinged. at 6 to the base section 4 for supporting the track carrying section-2 therefrom, the hinge being located adjacent one end of the elevator and the other end of the latterbeing held against depression by suitable posts or the like 72 The section 2 may be tilted around its hinges 6 to cause a car to travel from the rails 3 as will be readily understood;
Mounted on the upper section 2 of the elevator 1 and positioned between the rails 3, is a bar 8 having a thickened central portion formed with a recess 9 opening through the upper and lower edges and through one side of said bar, the open side ofsaid recess being closed however by a plate 10 so that a truly rectangular shape is imparted-to the recess 9. for effectively guiding a rectangular lock block 11 which is received therein for projection between the car axles A. Hecesses 12 are formed in the end walls of recess 9 and a pair of hook-like axle gripping dogs 13 are pivoted in said recesses 12 as shown clearly in Fig. 3, said dogs being automatically moved to operative position by ascent of the lock block 11.. This block. is provided with recesses 14in its ends into which the dogs 13 drop when said block is lowered, whereby to permit the car to travel from the elevator.

the fork 16 and the link to lower the lock block 11 against the tensionof a coiled spring 19 which holds said block in raised position. As shown clearly in Fig. 3, the relation of the dog 17 and lever 18 is such as to permit tilting of the upper elevator section 2 without offering any obstruction whatever to such movement.
For holding the lock block 11 in lowered position, a sliding latch bolt 20 is provided, one end of said bolt extending through one side of the vertical guide 21 in which the fork 16 operates as will be clear from Figs. 4 to 7. The other end of the bolt'20 is spaced below one of the rails 3 and provided with a longitudinal slot 22, a suitable bearing 23 being provided for slidably supporting the central portion of the bolt. Betwe'en bearing 23 and a shoulder 2a on the bolt 20, a coiled sprlng 25 is provided for projecting said bolt whenever lever 18 is operated to lower the fork 16 to the extent depicted in Figs. 5, 6 and 7. When the bolt is thus projected, the outer end of the slot 22 is positioned below the beveled lower end 26 of a vertically moving operation plunger 27 which projects upwardly through the rail 3 above mentioned (see Fig. 5). When the car now travels from the elevator, one of its wheels W will depress the plunger 27 sothat its beveled end 26 engages the outer end of-slot 22 and partially withdraws the bolt 20 against 'the tension of spring 25 as depicted in Fig. 6. The tension of spring 19 is greater-than that of the spring 25, so that the bolt will remain in its partially retracted position, due to friction. When now a second. car passes onto the elevator, one wheel thereof will again depress the plunger 7, and in order that such depression I may totally release the bolt 20 to permit 'spring19 to automatically move the lock block 11 to operative position, I provide the following construction.
A slide 80 is mounted on the outer end of bolt 20 and is formed with a longitudinal slot 31 which is disposed over the slot 22, the inner end of said slide being connected to the bolt by a rivet or the like 32' which passes through; said slot, said slide being normally forced outwardly by the coiled spring 33. Upon the first depression of the plunger 27 as above set forth, the slide 80 will'move away from the outer end of slot 22 as depicted in Fig. 6, but when the plunger 27 again rises, the spring 33 will return the slide to its initial position, thus disposing its outer end beneath the bevel 26 of plunger 27 as shown in. Fig. 7. As the next car passing onto the elevator now depresses this plunger, its beveled end will engage the slide'30 as shown in Fig. 8 so'that the bolt20 will be totally withdrawn to permit spring 19 to move the block 11 to operative position between the axles A, the dogs 13 being automatically projected at the same time.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be obvious that although my invention is of simple and inexpensive nature, it will be highly eflicient and durable for the purposes intended. The operation is the same at both the upper and lower ends of the mine shaft, that is the lever 18 is operated. to re lease the lock block 11, thus permitting the car on the elevator to travel therefrom. At the same time the bolt 20 is automatically applied to hold the lock block in lowered position. The car in passing from the elevator depresses the plunger 27 and thus partially withdraws the bolt 20. As the next car now travels onto the elevator, the plunger is depressed for a second time and by its engagement with the slide 30, the bolt 20 is totally withdrawn so that the spring 19 moves the lock block to operative position and applies the dogs 13. The lever 18 may either be actuated by hand or by any suitable type of trip mechanism.
Since probably the best results are obtained from the several specific details shown and described, these details are preferably employed, but I wish it understood that within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous minor changes may well be made.
I claim:
1. In a car look for elevators, the combination of a car elevator, a lock for holding the car on said elevator, means for releasing said lock, a latch for holding said lock in released position, a car-depressed operating member for partially releasing said latch when the car leaves the elevator, means including said operating member for completely releasing said latch when another car passes onto said elevator, and means for moving said lock to operative position when said latch is released. 2. In a car look for elevators, the combination of a car elevator, a lock for holding the car on said elevator, means for releasing said look, a latch for holding said lock in released position, a car-depressed operating member having a cam surface, an
abutment on said latch coacting with said cam surface on depression of said member by a car leaving the elevator, whereby to partially release the latch, an additional abutment on said latch for engagement with said cam surface when said operating member is again depressed by passage of another car onto the elevator, whereby to completely release said latch, and means for moving said lock to operative position when said latch is released.
3. A structure as specified in claim 2, said additional abutment being movable away 1368,00 1 11bit from said first named abutment upon the first mentioned depression of said operating member, and a spring for returning said additional abutment after ascent of said operating member.
4:. In a car lock for elevators, the combination of a car elevator, a lock for holding a car on said elevator, means for releasing said lock, a horizontally slidable latch bolt for holding said look in released position, said bolt having a longitudinal slot, a car-depressed plunger Whose lower end is positioned above one end of said slot and beveled to engage said end, whereby to partially withdraw said bolt upon depres sion of said plunger by passage of the car from the elevator, a plate mounted on said bolt and having a slot whose end is disposed for engagement by said beveled end of said plunger when the latter is depressed by passage of a second car onto the elevator, whereby to totally release said bolt, said plate being slidable away from said end of the slot in said bolt upon said first named depression of said plunger, means for returning said plate upon ascent of said plunger, and means for moving said lock to operative position when said bolt is released.
5. In a car look for elevators, the combination of a car elevator, a vertically slidable lock block of a length to abut both axles of the car, means for raising said block between the car axles, a fixed guide for said block, a pair of axle-gripping dogs mounted pivotally on said guide at the ends of said block and moved to operative position by ascent of said lock block, and means for lowering said block.
6. In a car lock for elevators, the combination of a car elevator, a lock block and means for raising said block between the car axles, a guide for said block, a pair of axle-gripping dogs mounted at the ends of said guide and moved to operative position by the ascent of said lock block, and means for lowering said block, the ends of said block having recesses into which said dogs drop when the block is lowered.
