To all whom 'it may Concern:
13e it known that I, Tnoams NATHAN RUS- SELL, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improveuu-nt in Car-Roofs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to outside metal roofs for railway ears, and has for its principal objects to improve the strength and rigidity of the roof frame; also the attachment for movably confiningr the main or fiat portions of the eaves ends of the roof sheets` whereby the joint incident thereto made proof against leakage and minor accidents; and also to improve the construction and 'functions of the seam clip whereby the roof sheet seam is confined.
The invention consists in the parts and combinations thereof hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In order to make the invention more clearly understood I have shown in the accompanying drawings means for carrying the same into practical effect, without limiting my improvements, in their useful applications, to the particular construction which, for the purpose of example, I have delineated. In the said drawings Fieure 1 is a transverse vertical section, showing one half of a car root' embodying the invention.

Fig. S is a vertical transverse sei-tion of the same, showing the eaves portion of the roof and supporting frame parts on a larger scale.

Referring to the drawings, 4 in'di fates the sido plate of Z-bar forni in cross` section, having a top inner horizontal flange 1, a vertical wel: 2 and an outer bottom horizon tal flange 3. Alis the ridge pole, and 5 the cai-lines. the latter being ol' Z-bar form in cross sci-tion having a, top horizontal flange t3. a vel-tical web 'l and u bottom horizontal flange 8. Each carlino extends preferably across the car, from side plate, to Side plate,
and is attached to the ridge pole by a bolt 9, passing up through the flange 8 of' the earline. At its outer end the flange (i passes under the flange 1 of the side plate and is attached thereto by one or more rivets 10, the web 7 is bent parallel with the web of the side plate and is attached thereto by one or more rivets 11, and the fiange 8 abuts the said web 2 of the side plate. To accommodate this construction the carline flanges 6 and 8 are cut. ofl` flush with the inner face of the side plate web and the web 7 is bent described.

The filler is also recessed along its outer edge at 18 to receive the eaves strip 19.

The said posts are or may be of Z-har forni in cross section, having an inner flange. 21 arranged Hlongitudiually of the ear. an outwardly extending web 2:2, and an outer longitudinal flange 'The flange Zi is cut ofi' to ahnt the 'under side of the bottom side plate Bange :5, the web 22 is bent parallel with `said flange and attached theret0 by a rivet 24, and the Bange Q3 is bent inwardly parallel with the flange 3 and attached thereto by a rivet 25. So far as are concerned other features of my invention, the posts .20 may be of U-form in cross section, having their outer longitudinal web out ofi' to abut the under side of the fiange 3 and their two outwardly extending webs bent forward and rearward respectively, parallel with the under side of the Range 3 and attached thereto by rivets similar to the rivet M.

38 is an. eaves flashing ineloeing the upper part of the fascia and formed with an inwardly extending flange 39 which entere` the recess 18, over the bottom flange 31 and under the hook flange 37 and between the said fianges. The flashing is attached to the outer side of the fascia hy nails 40, and is also overlaid by the Shanks of the roof sheet seam clins 41.

Between the projection 42 and the fingers 43 the elip is formed at its slidee` with openings 44: which extend outward past the eaves end of the seam 35, thereby allowing free escape of cinders and duet, and moisture, which would otherwise aecumulate and cause the rotting of the roof sheets in proximity to the clips. The. outer partis of the fingers 43 are also elevated above the flashing 38 sie as to leave forward and rearward `openings 45, for the saine pur- -pose with respect to the fiashing.
