To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLAN B. FIELD, a resident of West Cliff-on-Sea, in England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coil-Supports for Dynamo-Electric Machines, of which the following is a speciication.
My invention relates to dynamo-electric machines, and it has special reference to means for bracing and spacing the overhanging end portions of coils of such machines.
The object of my invention is to provide devices of vthe above-indicated character which shall be simple, inexpensive and duable in construction and effective and reliable in operation.
In the prior art, it has been customary practice in the rotors of dynamo-electric machines employing coils of the concentric turn type to space the overhanging end portions of the separate coils by means of suitable blocks of material severally disposed intermediate the pairs of closely adjacent turns of the coil and suitably secured by means of wrapping-cord. As an additional support, a ring or band adapted to encircle the said end portions has been employed. In many cases, no means have been provided for mutually bracing adja cent coils. It will thus be seen that, when operating under high speed conditions, the overhanging end portions of the coils might shift laterally and were not as rigidly supported as might be desired. Moreover, in case of sudden short-circuits or other causes of shock, the lack of tangential bracing has proved a series fault.
According' to my invention, I provide a plurality of wedging members severally attached to the shaft of the machine and severally adapted to engagethe confronting outermost turns of the overhanging end portions of adjacent coils, and a plurality of independent relatively small wedging `members severally secured to the shaft and severally adapted to engage the pairs of the closely adjacent turns of the end portions of each coil. The said end portions are thereby rigidly and satisfactorily braced and spaced.
It should be noted thatA whereas the end portions are radially supported by a suitable retaining ring, the additional centrifugal force of the wedging members, during rotation, is not imposed upon the ring, but is eX- erted upon the shaft.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of the rotor of a dynamo-electric machine embodying my invention, the coil-retaining ring being omitted for clearness; Fig. 2 is a top perspective view, with parts broken away, of one of my coil-spacing devices; Fig. 3 is a view of my other device, taken on the line III-III of Fig. 4; Fig. 4 is a view, pard tially in end elevation and partially in section, of a portion of the machine of Fig. l, showing the construction details of my coilspacing devices; and Fig. 5 is a view in side elevation, with parts broken away, of one of the devices shown in Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawing, a rotor 1 of a dynamo-electric machine comprises a core 2, a plurality of coils 3 of the concentric turn type, the several turns 4. being suitably disposed in the core 2, a shaft 5, my device 6 for bracing adjacent coils and my associated device 7 for spacing the turns 4 of the individual coils 3.
It will be understood that the specific structure of the rotor is not material to my present invention, and, consequently, further description thereof is not deemed necessary. l
The device 6 is disposed to engage confronting turns of adjacent coils and comprises a box-like memberthat is constructed of a U-shaped strap 8, a pair of channel members 9 severally inclosing the open sides of the strap 8, a pair of U-shaped bracing or stiffening members 10 for the strap 8 and a plurality of suitable clamping members ll for attaching the device 6 to the shaft 5.
Each leg of the strap 8 has a fan-shaped or Haring radially outer portion that is adapted to conform to the non-parallel edges of adjacent coils. The channel members 9 are riveted or otherwise suitably attached to the outer sides, and the stilfening members 10 are suitably secured within the radially outer ends of the flaring portions. Disposed within the closed end of the strap 8 is a suitably shaped block 13 through which extend the clamping members l1, which may be bolts or other suitable devices.
Suitable insulating material 14- is interposed between the device 6 and the coils 3 for protection of the coils from mechanical injury and grounds.
rlhe device 7 is adapted to engage the closely adjacent turns of the individual coils, and comprises a wedge-shaped hollow guideblocl; 15 and a clamping member 16 'that extends therethrough and is attached to the shaft 5. The clamping member is shown as a rod having a threaded inner end and a head 17 at its outer end and an intermediate polygonal enlargement 1S that is adapted to be of service in screwing the rod into the shaft. ln assembling, the rod 1G is radially adjusted until the head 17 engages an internal shoulder 19inthe bloclr 15. The rod 16 may then be held from further rotation by means of cotter pins 20 Aextending through registering openings in the block 15 and the head 17. A pair of oppositely disposed protective insulating channel pieces 21 are slidably disposed around the block 15 to leave a relativelyT narrow longitudinal chamber 22 o-n the side adjacent to the core 2, thereby serving to permit thermal expansion of the coils 3 without disturbing the bloclrs 15 or injuring the insulating channel pieces 21.
A coil-retaining ring 23 of the usual or other suitable type is preferably employed on the rotor 1, and wedging or filling members 211 and 25 are respectively disposed intermediate the ring 23 and the devices 6 and 7.
l do not wish to be restricted to the specific structure herein set forth, as many modilications thereof may be made within the spirit and scope of my invention; l, therefore, desire that only such limitations shall be imposed as are indicated in the appended claims.,
l claim as my invention:
1. ln a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a magnetizable member having a plurality of slots and a plurality of coils of the concentric turn type disposed therein, of a plurality of wedging-members severally att-ached to the shaft of said machine and disposed intermediate the confronting outermost turns of adjacent coils for bracing the same, and a plurality of individual relatively small wedging members severally secured to said shaft and disposed. intermediate the pairs of the closely adjacent turns of each coil for spacing the same.
2. ln a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a magnetizable member having a plurality of slots and a plurality of magnet coils of the concentric turn type disposed therein and having overhanging end portions, of a plurality of boX-lilre wedgingmembers severally detachably secured to the shaft of said machine and disposed intermediate the confronting outermost turns of the pairs of end portions of adjacent coils for bracing the same, and a plurality of individual relatively small hollow wedging members severally adjustably attached to said shaft and disposed intermediate the pairs of the closely adjacent turns of the end portions of each coil for spacing the same.
3. ln a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a magnetizable member having a plurality of slots and a plurality of magnet coils of the concentric turn type disposed therein and having overhanging end portions, of a plurality of box-like wedging members severally embodying` a substantially U-shaped member that is detachably secured` to the shaft of said machine and severally adapted to engage the confronting outermost turns of the pairs of end portions of adjacent coils for bracing the same, a plurality of independent relatively small hollow wedging members severally adapted to engage the pairs of the closely adjacent turns of the end portions of each coil for. spacing the same, a plurality of clamping means severally extending through said hollow wedging members and adjustably attached to said shaft, and an annular member surrounding said end portions.,
e. ln a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a magnetizable member having a plurality of slots and a plurality of magnet coils of the concentric turn type disposed therein and having overhanging end portions, of a plurality of box-like wedging members severally detachably secured tothe shaft of saidmachine and severally adapted to engage the pairs of closely adjacent turns of each coil for bracing the same.
5. ln a dynamo-electric machine, the combina-tion with a magnetizable member having a plurality of slots and a plurality of coils of the concentric turn type disposed therein, of a plurality of individual relatively small wedging members severally detachably secured to the shaft of said machine and severally adapted to engage the pairs of the closely adjacent turns of each coil for spacing the same.
6. ln a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a magnetizable member having a plurality of slots and a. plurality of magnet coils of the concentric turn type disposed therein and havin overhanging end portions, of a plurality of independent relatively small hollow wedging members severally adapted to engage the pairs of the closely adjacent turns ofthe end portions of` each coil for spacing the same, and a plurality of clamping means severally extending through said hollow wedging members and adjustably attached to` said shaft.
7. ln a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a magnetizable member having a plurality of slots and a plurality of concentric coils disposed therein, of a wedge for engaging adjacent turns of said coils and subscribed my name this 15th day of Jancomprlsing asheet metal U-shaped member uary 1914.
