a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and 1mproved Convertible Garment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to wearing apparel,

andits object is to provide a new and improved convertible garment combining a dressand overalls more especially designed for the use of children, and arranged to permit of conveniently and quickly converting the dress into overalls or vice versa, thus allowing a child to walk to and from a playground fully and cleanly dressed and to .permit the child while on the playground to play while being dressed in the overalls and with the dress protected from being soiled.

lln order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a dress and overalls, of which either is adapted to be worn outside of the other, the overalls having shoulder straps connecting the back and front of the overalls with each other, fastening devices detachably connecting the back of the overalls with the back of the dress, and fastening devices detachably connecting the front of the overalls with the front of the dress. Use is also made of overall legs having their lower portions adapted to be turned up within the upper portion of the legs, and fastening members for securing the turnedup lower leg portions to the upper leg portions.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

The convertible garment consists essentially of a childs dress 10 and overalls 11,

either of which can be worn on the outside of the other, as will be readily understood by comparison of Figs. 1 and 2 with Figs. 3 and 4. The dress 10 comprises the usual body 12 having sleeves 13 and a neck opening 14 with a front extension 15 adapted to be closed by suitable fastening device 16 after the dress is placed in position on the childs body. The dress is also ornamented with a belt 17 but this feature may be varied or entirely omitted, if desired. The dress 10 is provided at the front upper portion with buttonholes 18 disposed on opposite sides of the median line of the front of the dress, and directly above the buttonholes 18 are arranged slits 19. Similar buttonholes 20 are arranged on the back upper portion of the dress 12 and are disposed on opposite sides of the median line of the back of the dress, as plainly shown in Fig. 4, and directly above the buttonholes 20 are arranged slits 21.

The overalls 11 comprise a body from which extend legs 26, and a bib 27 provided with side flaps 28 having buttonholes 29 at their upper pointed ends. The bod 25 is also provided with a back 30 termmating in upwardly extending side flaps 31 to which are rigidly secured the rear ends of shoulder straps 32 provided at their forward ends .with buttons 33. Buttons 34 are secured to flaps 31, and on the back of the Shoulder straps at this point are secured buttons 35. The lower portions of the legs 27 are adapted to be turned up to extend within the upper portions of the :legs, and suitable. fastening devices such as snap buttons are used for holding the lower portions of the legs in position in the upper portions of the legs at the time the garment is worn with the dress 10 on the outside of the overalls 11, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. The

\ fastening devices are preferably in the form of sockets 40 attached to the inner sides of the lower portions of the legs and are adapted to engage studs 41 arranged on the inner sides of the upper ends of the legs, as plainly I worn outside 0 26 turned u thereof and astened in place by the fastenindicated in Fi 4. When the overalls are the dress 10 the fastenin members 40 and 41 are disconnected an the lower leg ortions are extended, as plainly indicate in Figs. 3 and 4.

When the child is to go to and from a play ound the overalls 11 are arrangedwithin the dress 10, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and with the lower portions of the legs within the upper portions straps extending within the corresponding shoulder portions of the dress 10. When the child arrives at the playground the garment is converted so that the overalls 11 are outside of the dress 10, as shown in Figs. 3.and 4. For this purpose the nurse or other attendant of the child disconnects the buttons 33 and 34 from the corresponding buttonholes 18 and 20 and disengages the buttons 33 from the buttonholes 29 thus disconnectin the bib 27 from the back 30 of the overal The bib 27 and the back 30 of the overalls are pulled downward and the body 12 of the dress is now passed inside of the body 25 of the overalls, after which the shoulder straps 32 are passed up over the outside of the shoulders of the dress 10,

and the free ends are passed into the slits 19 (see Fig. 7) after which the buttons '33 p are passed through the buttonholes 18 and engage with the buttonholes 29 thus fastening the front of the overalls to the front of the dress. The extra button 35 previously mentioned is engaged with the buttonholes '20 (see Fig. 8) at the back of the garment to connect the back of theoveralls with the back of the dress thus securely fastening the near,

overalls and dress together to prevent sli ping of the shoulder straps 32 on the shoulders of the dress.- The legs are now extended as previously described and shown in Figs. 3 and 4 thereby confining the lower portion of the dress bod 12 within the ody 25 of the overalls. dressed with the overalls outside of the dress 10. After play the garment is again converted withv the dress 10 outside of the overalls, it being understood that for this urpose the buttons 33 are disengaged m the buttonholes 29 and 18 to allow of lowering the bib 27 and the back 30, after which the lower portion of the body 12 of the dress 10 is pulled out-of the body 25 of the overalls 11 and passed over the bib 27 and the back 30, after which the shoulder straps 32 are again passed over the childs shouldersinside of the dress 10 and buttoned to the bib flaps 28 by engaging buttons 33 and buttonholes 29. The-buttons 33 and '34 are now again connected with the buttonholes 18 and 20 and the terminals of the fla s 28 are proiectedthrough the slits 19 an the termma s of the. flaps 31 are rojected through the slits 21, as shown in igs.

The child is now dressed wit the dress 10 on the outside and as this dress was protected by the overalls durin the time the child was at the playgroun it is evident that the dress is not soiled and the child can walk home cleanly dressed.

It will be noticed that the dress and the overalls can be entirely disconnected one from the other to allow of cleaning whenever it is desired to do so.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A convertible garment comprising a dress and overalls, of w ich eitherv is adapted to be worn outside of the other, the

overalls having shoulder straps'conne'ctin the back and front of the overalls with eac other, fastening devices detachablyconnecting the back of the overalls with the back of the dress, and fastening devices detachably connecting the front of the overalls with the front of the dress.
