0H. BURNER.
APPLICATIQN FILED, SEPT. 7. 1916.
Patent ed May 1918.
GARFIELD A. srnivcn, or ALIJINE, TEXAS. 1
OIL-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented na aaioie.
Application filed September 7, 1916. Serial No. 118,811.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, GARFIELD A. finance, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aldine, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in an oil burner.
The object of the invention is to provide a burner of the character described by means of which fuel oil is fed into a steam jet whereby it 'is atomized, mingled with the steam, and dischargedinto the combus tion chamber.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention relates to certain novel features of construction, arrangement of parts and use, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical, sectional View of the burner.
Fig. 2 is a nozzle end view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a rear end view thereof.
Fig. at is a plan View thereof.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation and the pipe con nections, and
Fig. 6 is a nozzle end View showing said pipe connections.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures, the numeral 1 designates a metallic block having the passageway 2 extending therethrough from end to end and forming a mixing chamber, into one end of which the thimble 3 is threaded. The inner end of this thimble is obtusely convex and has a restricted orifice 4E forming a nozzle and threaded into the outer end of the thimble is the steam pipe 5 through which steam is forced into the thimble and through the nozzle 42, forming a continuous steam jet which is discharged into the combustion chamber through the passageway 2. Integral with the block 1 and upstanding therefrom is the neck 6 into which the thimble 7 is threaded. This thimble is at right angles to the thimble 3 and its inner end is obtusely convex and has an. orifice 8 forming a nozzle. A fuel pipe 9 has one end threaded through an internal orifice through the wall of the neck 6 and thimble 7 and through this pipe, fuel oil is discharged in a continuous stream into the thimble 7 and passes down through the nozzle 8 thereof into the steam jet, and is thereby atomized and mingled with the steam and carried into the combustion chamber. The fuel being thoroughly atomized in the mixing chamber is completely consumed in the combustion chamber. The upper end of the thimble 7 is closed by means of a plug 1.0 which is threaded therein and which may be readily removed when it is desired to clean out said thimble and relieve it from deposits of carbon which might accumulate therein.
This form of burner may be easily cleaned by the removal of the thimbles 3 and 7 leaving the passageway 2 open and readily accessible.
The combustion takes place at the inner end of the mixing chamber thereby causing a slight backward pressure in said chamber 4 into the mixing chamber will rotate or whirl, by reason of said back pressure catching up and entraining the fuel from the nozzle 8 and the whirling of the mixture in the chamber will cause the complete and uniform mixture of the fuel and steam. The inner ends of the thimbles 3 and 7 have been made obtusely oval so as to project only a short distance into the mixing chamber, and thus offer the least possible obstruction to the whirling and agitation of the mixture.
What I claim is: An oil burner including a block having a passageway extending therethrough from end to end, a thimble threaded into one end of said passageway whose inner end is obtusely convex, said thimble having an enlarged internal chamber communicating with said passageway through a restricted orifice in its inner end through which steam is projectedinto said passageway in a continuous stream from said chamber, a steam pipe connected to the outer end of said thimble, a neck upstanding from said block and integral therewith, a thimble having an obtusely convex inner end and an enlarged internal chamber, said thimble being threaded into said block through said neck at right angles to the first mentioned thimble, said chamber communicating with said passageway through a restricted orifice in its inner end, through which fuel is dis charged in a continuous stream, a removable plug threaded into and closing the outer end of said chamber, a fuel pipe threaded through the Wall of said neck and thimble and communicating With the internal chamber of said thimble, said. thinlbl'e's' bein arranged to discharge steam and fuel respec- R tively at right angles to each other in said passageway.
In testimony whereof I have signed my Copies of this patent may be obtained for name to this specification in thepi'esence of two subscrlblng wltnesses.
