WILLIAM GRIKSGHEIT, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN,
DRAIN-COCK.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28, 1918.
Application led March 14, 1918. Serial No. 222,278.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM GRinscHErr, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the countyT of iVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drain- Cocks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had thereinl to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates todrain-cocks particularly designed for use in connection with motor vehicle radiators and similar constructions, and it is the object of the invention to obtain a simple and inexpensive construction forming a normally tight closure and one which is easily opened when necessary.
In the drawings:
Figure l is an elevation of the drain-cock; and
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough.
In the present state of the art it is usual to form drain-cocks of plug-valves, or in some cases to provide detachable screwthreaded plugs which must be removed when the radiator or other structure is to be drained. The plug-valves to form a tight closure must be carefully made and if not so made are apt to leak, while the screw plugs are very inconvenient to manipulate. With my improved structure I combine the simplicity of a threaded plug-valve with a structure which will form a tight closure.
My improvement comprises a casing A having a threaded nipple B for attachment to the radiator or other device and also preferably a polygonal portion C for engagement with the wrench. This casing is bored axially from its opposite ends so as to leave a valve-seat D, and an angling bore E intersects the main bore at a point adjacent to said valve-seat. The main bore is threaded, as indicated at F, to engage a threaded stem G preferably formed with an integral T- handle H. The threaded portion of the stem is of greater diameter than the shank portion and the threads terminate so as to leave the outer end of this portion of greater diameter uncut. The threads are also removed from the outer portion of the main bore, as indicated at J, and from the inner end portion of the stem, as indicated at K. Thus the stem is free to be adjusted with clearance for the portion I in the portion J and also with clearance for the stem adjacent te the seat,
`striking of the portion I against the shoulder L, but in this position there is unobstructed communication between the angling passage E and the main passage through the nipple B.
In the method of manufacture all of the operations for forming the casing can be performed by a single chucking; also the threaded stem can be engaged with the casing while the latter is still chucked and the iin L spun down. This greatly simpliies the manufacture and reduces cost, while at the same time the structure when complete has advantages over constructions heretofore used. Among these advantages are, rst, that the valve when closed will be leak proof as the stem can always be forced to a true seat; second, the valve can be easily opened at any time and without the use of tools; third, in case of clogging of the passage this may be cleared by the running of a wire or other instrument through the angling bore and into the nipple; and fourth, the fact that the stem is provided with an enlarged portion which is free from threads and the casing with the spun fin eectually prevents the disengagement of the stem from the casing. This would not be the case if the threads were continued on the stem, as they would then cut through the lin by the application of a slight force.
What I claim as my invention is:
l. A drain-cock comprising a casing having an axial passage therethrough threaded in one portion thereof and provided with a contracted seat in another portion, said casing also having an angling passage intersecting the axial passage at a point adjacent to said seat, a stem for engaging said seat having a threaded portion for engaging the threaded passage in said casing, a shank of reduced diameter and an unthreaded portion between said reduced shank and threaded portion, and a fin on said casin spun in to form a shoulder for engaging sai n unthreaded portion adjacent to said shank.
2. A drain-cock comprising a casing having an axial passage therethrough and an intersecting angular passage with a valve xvi seat adjacent lo the point oil? interseotiom said axial pass ge being threaded, a stern for engaging Said seat threaded to engage the threads or Said axial passage having` a shank of lesa dian'ieter and an Unthreaded portion of the diai'neter of the threaded portion and between the saine and Said Shank, and a iin on Said caeing closed in to enrround said shank and forni a shoulder for engaging` the larger diameter Unthreaded portion, the latter being located to permit outi'ard movement oi' the Stein to clear the connection between Said angular and axial pas-Sages.
3. A drain-cook comprising a casing hav ing` an axial passage and an intersecting angular paseage therein with a valve-seat adjacent to the point of intersection, said easing haringl a threaded nipple at its inner end and a polygonal portion adjacent thereto and the outer end portion of Said axial passage being threaded, a valve stein haring a portion threaded to engage the threade` of said axial passage havingy a shank oi lese diameter and an mitin-ended portion of larger diameter than the shank portion .hetWeen said thank and the threaded portion,
of title te obtained for ave tente caen, t3 Washington,
a portion of the threads in Said axial passagre heilig remored to permit nioreinent of the Unthreaded large diameter portion of said stein, and a iin on said casing turned in around Said shank and forming a stop :tor engaging said Unthreaded large diamo ter portion.
if. i drain-,cook comprising a casing and a ralve Stein having; a T-shaped head, said stein having a threaded port-ion, a Shank portion or less diameter and an Unthreaded portion of larger diameter than the Sha-nk portion between Said shank and threaded portion and Said casing being provided with an axial passage and an intersecting angling paesage with a Valve seat adjacent tothe point oi intersection, said axial passage haringthreaded portion for engaging the threads of said Stein, and an Unthreaded portion at itsI outer end for receiving Said Unthreaded portion of larger diameter on Said Stenrr and a iin at the outer end turned in around said shank and adapted to prevent the detachment olf the Stern from Said eaeing.
ln testimony whereorI I aiiiX my Signature.
