SHOE FAST-ENER. APPLICATION'FILED SEPT. 10. 19! 7.
I Patented May 28, 1918.

A. It. NEWMAN, or rUKwAnA, SOUTH DAKOTA.
SHOE-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented lIay 2S, 1918.
Application filed September 10, 1917. Serial No. 190,594.
To a whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUBREY H. FISHER,
a citizen of the United States, and resident.
which are illustrated in theaccompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The invention relates to improvements in fasteners for apparel shoes; its object being to provide for the secure fastening of the shoe by means concealed from view when the shoe is worn, and which may be operated both in fastening and releasing by drawing upon a single cord.
The invention consists in a plate adapted to be pivotally attached to one flap of the shoe upper and having a tangential slot engageable with a stud secured to the other flap, the plate being turned on its pivot by cords attached thereto, one at each side of the pivot pin and extending upwardly to the top of the shoe, the same cords being employed for all of the fastening plates when a plurality thereof are used. It consists further in certain details which are hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a shoe, some parts being broken away, equipped with the improved fastening device;
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view through the two flaps of the shoe and one of the fastening devices; and
Figs. 3 and 4 are plan views of the fastening plate and stud detachable from the shoe, one showing the parts in closed position and the other in the open position.
The shoe 10 may be of any style or type except that its upper 11 is provided with an overlapping flap 12. To the under face of the flap 12 there are attached, by means of pivot studs 13, securing plates 1%, as many being used as the length of the flap may require. Each of these plates has a tangentially projecting slotted wing 15. headed stud 16, secured to the under flap 17 of the shoe upper and transversely alined with the pivot pin 13, engages the slot 18 of the plate, the outer end 19 of the slot being sufficiently large to permit the entry of its head.
Draw cords 20, 21, are attached, respectively, to the outer end of the wing 15, as at 22, and to the body of the plate at the opposite side Ofthe pivot 13, as at 23. These cords may be made of any suitable material, either leather fabric or wire, and eachis attached to all of the fastening plates. Conveniently thetwo cords may be of a single piece threaded through a plurality of apertures in each of the attaching plates ll and doubled upon itself at the lower plate. lVhen the shoe is unfastened the wing 15 extends transversely thereacross, the stud 16 occupying the outer end of the slot. By drawing upon the cord 20 all of the plates are swung upwardly, the wing of each sliding along its cooperating stud from the position shown in Fig. i to that shown in Figs. 1 and 3, drawing the flap 12 over upon the flap 17 by a camming action of the plates upon the studs.
At the upper end of the flap 17 there is placed an additional stud 2%, so positioned that the enlarged end 19 of the upper attaching plate may be caught thereover, thus preventing all the plates from swinging backwardly. In order to unfasten the shoe the upper plate is first disengaged from the stud 2a; thereupon by drawing up the cord 21 all of the plates are turned on their pivots to the position of Fig. 4.
While a preferred embodiment of the invention is shown and described, various changes of detail may be made without departing from its scope.
I claim as my invention- 1. A shoe fastening device comprising a plurality of plates adapted for pivotal attachment to one flap of a shoe, each having a tangentially slotted wing, a plurality of studs adapted for attachment to the other flap of the shoe for engagement with said slots, and means for turning said plates simultaneously about said points of pivotal attachment.
2. A shoe fastening device comprising a plurality of plates each adapted for pivotal attachment to one flap of a shoe and having a tangentially slotted wing, a plurality of studs adapted for attachment to the other flap of the shoe and engaging the slot of the wing, and a draw cord attached to the ends of the wings of the several plates.
3. A shoe fastening device comprising a plurality of plates each adapted for pivotal attachment to one flap of a shoe and having a tangentially slotted wing, a pluralitt of studs adapted for attachment to the other flap of the shoe and engaging the slot of the Wing, and draw cords attached, respectively, to the ends of the Wings and to the body portions of each of the several plates. 7
memes adapted to be attached to the second-named shoe flap for engagement With the slot in the Wing of the upper plate when the firstnamed stud cooperating therewith is at the inner end of the slot thereof.
5. A shoe fastening device comprising a plate adapted for pivotal attachment to one flap of a shoe, and having a tangentially slotted Wing, and a stud adapted for attachment to the other flap of the shoe for en gagement with the slot of the Wing said slot being formed to allow the plate to be moved from locked to unlocked position without drawing the flaps together.
