PORTABLE GARMENT-SUPPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28, 1918.
Application filed October 11, 1917. Serial No. 195,891.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALoYsrUs G. BREN- NAN and JOHN S. BRENNAN, citizens of the United States, and residents of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Garment- Supports; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Our invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in garment supports, and refers more particularly to a portable garment horse.
In clothing stores and more particularly stores selling ladies garments, it is the general practice, when displaying garments to a prospective customer, to throw the garments over a chair back, or the like, and then to carry the garments, all bunched together, to the case or rack where they are kept. This method of displaying garments has proven entirely unsatisfactory in that they slide from the chair back to the fioor and become soiled, are creased, rumpled and otherwise damaged by this manner of handling the same, and further considerable time and labor is wasted.
Thus, with these inherent objections in mind, our invention was conceived and has for its primary object to provide a portable garment support or horse, the top surface of which is covered with suitable nappy material, such as velvet, felt, or the like whereby garments thrown thereover will be prevented from slipping to the floor.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, our invention resides in the novel conslruction, combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claim, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing we have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of our invention constructed according to the best mode we have so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view thereof. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken through the horizontal column on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents a horizontal column formed of a single sheet of metal or other suitable material of inverted U-shapc in cross section, and having its longitudinal.
edge portions secured to a suitable base 2 by means of fastenings 3, as best shown in Fig. 3.
The column thus formed has its open ends closed by the upper ends 4 of a pair of suitable supporting legs or members 5 having their lower ends connected by a suitable transverse brace 6 and supported by means of casters 7. The frame or structure thus formed is further braced by means of an angular brace or bracket 8 secured to each end of transverse brace 6 and the adjacent portions of supports 5.
Suitable handles 9 are secured to members 5 whereby the garment support may be readily moved from place to place, and entirely covering the column 1 is a sheet of nappy material 10 such as velvet, felt, or the like having its ends turned under the bottom 2 of column 1 and secured thereto by any desired fastening means 11.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the many advantages of our invention will be at once apparent and it is obvious that by covering column 1 with a nappy material 10, garments thrown thereover will be prevented from slipping to the floor, and further that by the use of such a support considerable time and labor will be saved and the garments handled with ease and facility.
We claim As a new article of manufacture, a garment support comprising a hollow garment receiving column of substantially inverted U-shape in cross sectionQe, nappy covering for the column, a pair of. supporting members having their upper ends shaped to confrom with the shape of said column and closing the ends thereof and means carried by the lower ends of said supporting members whereby the garment support may be nee'meo readily moved from place to place substantially as described.
In testimony that We claim the foregoing we have hereunto set: our hands at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin.
ALOYSIUS G. BRENNAN, JOHN S. BRENNAN.
