To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, Mrn'roN E.. BEAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Childrens Toilet- Seats, of which the following is a specication. i

The object of this invention is to provide an improved toilet seat for small children, and the invention aims to provide a seat which may be quickly and securely mounted on a standard toilet seat, which provides a guard device to surround the body of the child and prevent its falling from the seat; and in which the seat-securing means and the said guard means are arranged to be quickly and conveniently collapsed' into compact condition for storage or transportation.

In the drawings, 5 indicates a closet bowl and 6 the usual wooden seat thereon. My improved device comprises a base or seat portion 7 having a hole of smaller dimensions than the one in the seat 6. The base 7 is arranged to be secured in place on the seat 6 by means which is secured to the lower side of said base and which depends through the openin in the seat 6 and engages beneath the e ges of the latter opening.- Said means in the form herein shown comprises a rod 8 having its mid-portion secured to the underside ofthe base 7 rearwardly of the opening therein in such a manner that the rod may turn in its bearings. Suitable means such as staples-8? may be employed to secure the rod` in place. The end portions of the rod are offset and are sloped downwardly to engage beneath the seat 6. In associating the device with the seat 6 the hooked end portions of the rod 8 are passed through the mid-portion of the opening in the seat 6, the rod 8 being moved by gravity into operative position. The

.base 7 is then moved rearwardly during which movement the inclined ends of the rod 8 will frictionally bind against the edgev of the opening in the seat 6 so that the base 7will be firmly secured in place.

Spaced above the base 7 4is a guard which may be in the form of a U-shaped frame 9 60 providing sidearms and a back to partially surround the child.` The ends of the frame 9 may be connected by a retainer, such as a detachable flexible strap 10 to complete the inclosure. This guard frame is arranged to be connected to the base 7 by means of two links 11 at opposite sides of said seat Vnear the forward ends thereof, each of said .links having its opposite ends pivoted respectively to the seat and the end portions of the frame 9. At the rear of the structure is a link 12 which in this instance is pivoted at its lower end at 13 to the rear edge of the seat 7 and has a notch 111 near its upper end to receive a bolt 15 mounted in the 75 central portion or back of the frame 9. A thumb-nut 16 threaded on the bolt 15 provides means for clamping the link 12 to the f frame 9. The rear link 12 swings on an axis at right angles to the axes of the front links 11, so that said front and rear links resist movement of each other and prevent accidental collapse of the guard frame. The rear portion of the frame 9 is preferably spaced forwardly from the rear edge of the'V 85 base 7 and the link 12 is correspondingly bent forwardly. Due to this bendl inthe link it will conform to the curved corner of the base 7 when in folded position, as shown in Fig. 1, thereby economizing on space,

In use, the parts occupy the position shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4. When it is desired to collapse the device for storage, the thumb-nut 16 is loosened and the link 12 is disengaged from the bolt 15 and swung 95 down along the edge of the seat 7 as shown in Fig. 1. The links 11 are then swung rearwardly and the frame 9 is simultaneously swung through an arc of 180 degrees into inverted position, as shown iny Fig. 1, so that the frame may be pushed down into close contact with the seat 7. By reason of its inversion the frame 9 is confined within the bounds of the base 7 when collapsed. When the hooked rod 8 is disengaged Ifrom 105 the seat 6 the rod may be turned to bring the angular ends closely along the lower face of the seat 7 so as to further reduce the space required for storage' of the device.
