BRACING AND DOOR-STOP FOR CARS.
Application led February 20, 1918.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, MINor C. BLusT, a 'citizen' of the United States, residing in Bellevue, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bracing and Door-Stops for Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to bracing for railway cars and more particularly to that type of bracing which is adapted to be applied to a car in which one or more of the walls is largely composed of doors, one of which types of bracing is described and claimed in my pending application for United States Letters Patent filed May`24, 1916, and Serially numbered 99,633, and has for its object to provide means for automatically insuring the placing of the bracing in operative position before the doors are closed.
Another object of the invention is to provide bracing means which will when applied to a car having an end wall composed of large doors and when in inoperative position, automatically prevent the closing of the doors until the bracing has been placed in operative position.
These and other objects will from the following description be apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains.
Referring now to the drawings in which like reference characters refer to like parts, Figure 1 is a cross sectional view of a car embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of a portion of the car taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross sectional view of a portion of the car showing the invention in detail; F ig 4c is a sectional view taken on the line 1 -f1 of Fig. 3, and Figs. 5 and 6 are enlarged detail views of a door stop member.
Referring now in detail tothe drawings, 1 indicates the underframe which may be of any desired construction and may comprisea center sill 2 and side sills 3 which may be connected by the end sill 4 and b the other usual cross members (not shown The superstructure of the car may be of any suitable construction and may be provided with a floor 5 andside walls 6 which side walls may be fastened to the usual side framing (not shown) in any suitable manner.

plates 7 may be provided which maybe connected at their ends by anl end plate 8, such side and end plates being of any preferrd t the end of the car body door posts 9 are providedl which at their lower ends are suitably connected with the underframe, and at theiry `upper ends are connected to a transverse member 10 through the medium of gusset members 11. Each of these door posts may be secured to a wooden corner post 12 or may be a part of a metallic corner post as disclosed in my above referred to pending application. The posts 9 andthe transverse member 10 define an openingin the end portion of the car body which open. ing is closed by doors 13 hinged to the end portions of the car. No locking means for the doors has been shown in the drawings, but it will be understood that any suitable means may be provided.
At the end of the car body and preferably within such body, braces la are provided which when in operative positions are adapted to extend across the door openino' and which'are movable to positions near t e car sides where they are substantially clear of the door opening. Each of these braces comprises an upper section 15 a lower section 16 and a tightening device 17. The lower po-rtion of the section 16 is pivotally connected with a member 18 which is preferably Secured to the side and end sills, and the upper portion of the section 15 is pivotally connected with a member 19 which is preferably secured to the gusset 11. The tightening device 17 may be of any suitable form but as illustrated in the drawings is substantially the same as that described in my above referred to application and may comprise a yoke 20 which is connected with the lower portion of the section 15, which yoke may comprise a hook 21 which when the brace is in operative position engages an eye portion 22 formed in the upper portion of the section 16.
On each side of the longitudinal center line of the car a door stop member 23 is provided which is movably mounted in the end plate 8. This member comprises a stop portion 24 with which one of the end doors is adapted to engage, a portion 25 which passes through the end plate 8, and an arm 26 which is connected with an arm 27 on the section 15 of the brace by a rod 28. and 16 of the brace-are disconnected the secas indicated by the arrows A in Figs. 1 andand such Varm Will, throughthe medium of the rod 28, move the arm 26 of the stop member in the direction as indicated by the arroWsB in Figs. 1 and 3 and will thus move the stop portions 24 yof the member vfrom a position clear of the door opening, as shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 3, to
aposition into the path of the door as shown vin dot and dash lilies in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, thus making the closing of the door substantially impossible While the brace is in 'inoperative position. When the section 15 ofthe brace is being moved to its operative position the operation of the parts is the reverseof that just described.
-Instead of providing a stop member 23 for each door a single member 23 may be provided vvhich may be engaged by both doors. When a single member is used it is so mounted that the stop portion 24 is movable into and out of the path of both doors and is preferably operated by the section 15 of one of the braces 14.
In' the drawings the stop members have been shovvn mounted in the end plate 8 and have hereinbefore been so described, but it is to'be understood that these members may be mounted in any other suitable part or parts of the car at any other suitable point or points around the door opening so long as they perform the function of preventing the closing'of the doors when the braces are in inoperative positions. v
It Will also be understood that the mechanism shown and described is illustrative and l that any mechanism for preventing the closing of the doors, operated by a brace or braces, When such braces are being moved totheir inoperative positions, is Within the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention What 1 claim asneW and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a car body having an opening formed therein of a door movable into said opening, a movable brace adapted to extend across said body, and means actuated by said brace for preventing the closing `of said door.
2. The combination With a car body hav-1 ing a door opening formed therein, of a door for closing said opening, a brace adapted to extend across said opening When in operative position and adapted to be moved to inoperative position substantially clear of saidY opening, and `means for preventing the closing of said door When said brace is in inoperative position.
3. The combination with a car body having Va door opening formed in its end, of doors for closing said opening, braces oonnected with said body adapted to-extend across said opening When in operative positions and adapted to be moved to inoperative positions substantially clear of said opening, and means operable by said bracesforpreventing the closing of said doors When said braces are in inoperative positions.
4. The combination With a-car body having an openingy formed in its end, of kdoors for closing saidv opening, movable braces Vadapted to extend across said opening, and
means movable into and out of the path of said doors, said means being actuated by said braces.
` 5. The combination With acar body having an opening formed in its end,of doors for closing said opening, braces Within said lbody adapted to extend across said openingk When in operative positions and adapted to be moved to inoperative positions substantially clear of said opening, and door stops movable by said braces into and out of the paths ofsaid doors.

doors for closing said opening', means connected 4With-said body adapted to extend across said opening when in operative position and conteract distortion of said body, said means being movable to inoperativejposition near the sides of the body and a movable door stop actuated by said means.
8. The combination with a car body having a door opening formed in its end, of doors for closing said opening, means connected with said body adapted to extend across said opening when in operative posi- `tion to counteractv distort-ion of said body,
said means being movable to inoperative position substantially clear ofsaid opening, and means actuated by the first mentioned means for preventing the closing of said doors When the first mentioned means is in inoperative position.
9. The combination with a Lcar body hav-v ing adoor opening formed in its end, of doors for closing said opening, means connected `vvith said body adapted to extend across the spacevvithin said body to counteract distortion thereof, said mcansbeing movable to inoperative position near the sides of said body, and automatically actuated means for preventing the closing of said doors When the iirst mentioned means is in inoperative position.

The combination With a car body having a door opening formed in its end, of doors for closing said opening, braces arranged Within said body adapted to counteract distortion of the body, said braces extending diagonally across said opening When in operative positions and being mov,- able to inoperative positions substantially clear of said opening, and means movable into the paths of said doors as said braces are moved to inoperative positions.

The combination With a car body having a door opening formed in its end, of a door movable into said opening, a brace pivotally connected with said body adapted to extend across said opening When in operative position and movable to inoperative position substantially clear of said opening, said brace comprising Lipper and lower sections, an arm on said upper section, a door stop member having a portion movable into and out of the path of said door, an arm on said member, and a link operatively connecting said arms.

The combination with a car body having a door opening formed in its end, of superstructure framing defining said opening, a door hinged to said framing and movable into said opening, a brace pivotally connected with said framing and movable transversely of the body, an arm on said brace extending beyond the connection to said framing, a member mounted in Said body having a portion adapted to be moved into and out of the path of said door, an arm on said member, and means for operatively connecting said arms.
13. The combination with a car body having a door opening formed in its end` of a door movable into said opening, a brace pivotally connected with said body and adapted to extend across said opening said brace being movable to inoperative position substantially clear of said opening, an arm on said brace, a. member movably mounted on said body, said member comprising a door engaging portion which is movable into the path of said door as said brace is moved to inoperative position, and means for operatively connecting said arm and member.
14. The combination with a car body having a door opening formed in its end, of superstructure framing defining said opening, doors hinged to said framing adapted to close said opening, braces connected With said framing and adapted to extend diagonally across said opening When in operative positions and movable to inoperative positions near the sides of said body, each of said braces comprising` pivoted upper and lower sections, and members having portions adapted to be moved into and out of the paths of said doors, each of said members being operatively connected With one of the pivoted sections of one of said braces.

The combination with a car body having a door opening formed in its end, of superstructure framing defining said opening, said framing comprising spaced door posts, a. transverse member connecting the upper ends of said posts, and an end plate, doors hinged to said posts adapted to be moved into said opening, braces connected with said body and adapted to extend diagonally across said opening When in operative position, said braces comprising upper and lower sections which are pivotally connected with said body and adapted to be swung to inoperative positions substantially clear or' said opening, members mounted in said transverse member and end plate, said members having portions Which said doors are adapted to engage When the braces are in inoperative positions, and Which are out of the paths of said doors When the braces are in operative positions, and means for operatively connecting one of said members with one of the pivoted sections of each of said braces.
