Be it known that I, PAUL A. FRANK, a citizen of the United States, residin at Akron, in the county of VSummit and tate of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Spark-Plug and Priming Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined spark plug and primin device, for use .in connection with internaJ combustion engines.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and convenient in use.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a metallic tubular body portion of the deviccthe upper end of which is formed polygonal in cross-section, as shown at 6, for the reception of a wrench. The lower end of the tubular body portion 5 is cylindrical and is exteriorly screw-threaded, as shown at 7, to engage Within the spark plug opening of the cylinder of the engine.
Arranged Within the tubular body portion. 5 is a tubular insulating member or porcolain insulator 8, having a longitudinal bore 9. The insulatin member 8 is provided with an annular ange 10, adapted to engage a shoulder 11, and a clamping ring 12, having screwthreaded engagement yvith the upper end of the,tubular body portion 5, as shown.
The nhmeral 13 designates an open ended o1' cup-shaped priming receptacle, which is preferably metallic and formed integral vilh a bas'e 14. This base is provided at its lower end with an annular groove 15, for the reception of the upper end of the tubular insulating member 8. The base 14 carries an annular flange lmthe end of which is bent or spun into an annular groove 17, formed in the insulating member 8, whereby the priming receptacle 13 is rigidly attached io the insulating member.
Extending laterally from the base 11 is a metallic arm i8, provided with a binding post 19, for connection with one pole of a source of current, the opposite pole df Which is grounded to the iralne work of the engine, and accordingly has electrical connection with the metallic tubular body portion 5, as is well known.
The base 14 is provided with a conical or tapered opening 20, leading into the priming receptacle 13, and into a cylindrical opening 21, which is internally screw-threaded, as shown. The opening 21 leads into the bore 9 of the insulating member 8.
The Wall of the opening 20 constitutes a valve for a conical or tapered valve 22, carried by a valve rod 23, extending up- Wardly beyond the receptacle 13, and provided with an insulating handle 24. Beneath and adjacent the valve 22 the rod 23 is provided with an enlarged cylindrical screwthreaded portion 25, engaging Within the screw-threaded opening 2i. .This serewthreaded portion 25 is provided with iongitudinal surface grooves or passages 25, preferably U-shaped in orosssection, as shown in Fig. 4. The rodV 23 prog downwardly beyond the screvv-threaded portion 25 in the form of an electrode 27, extending through the bore 9i1 and projecting below the screw-threaded portion 7 of the tubular body portion 6, to bear-ranged in proximity to an approximatel U-shaped co-acti electrode 28, attache to the screw-threads: portion 7, as shown.
"In operation, when the handle 24 is turned clockwise the' screw-threaded portion 25 is screwed down to bring the valve 22 in contact with its valve seat 20, thus closing the upper end of the bore 9. It is obvious that the device will now function as the ordinary spark plug.
To prime the engine before starting, the handle 24 is turned counter-clockwise, to elevate the valve 22 from its valve seat 20, whereby the passages 26 placeI the interior of the primingl receptacle 13 in communication with the bore 9. The gasolene or like fuel is new supplied to the receptacle 13 i and will ass into the cylinder of the engine. Be ore starting the engine, the valve 22 is returned to its seat.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the "suine, and that various changes in the .shapeJ size, und arrangement of parts muy be resorted to without departing from the spirit ol the inv-ntion or the scope of the subjoined claims,
Having thus descriliied my invention, I claim:
l. A combined spark plug and priming device, comprising a tubular metallic body portion; :1 tubular insulator arranged therein; n nii-lullin-d priming receptacle Secured to the tubular insulator und having a Screwthreadofl opening adapted for communicalion with the bore of tljiegtubular insulator; :i rod extending longitudinallyv through the bore and having one end servnig as an electrode; a courting electrode carried by the tubular metallic body portion; a cylindrical servw-tlireaded member carried by the rod and engaging within the screw-threaded opening und having a longitudinal passage formed therein; a valve arranged above the screw-threaded member and carried by the rod to cover and uncover the opening;
memos means to turn the rod, and a binding post connected with the receptacle.
