To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID G. MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Making Automobile-Bumpers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the manufacture of automobile bumpers and more particularly to a device for forming the same.
My object is to provide a simplified and improved machine for forming a spring metal automobile bumper of the type characterized by bent ends each having an eye.
The operation of forming the bumper consists, generally, of laying a heated metal bar in the machine and by means of a pressure die bending each end around a post, retaining said bent end in position and twisting it a quarter turn, and then curving the twisted end'into the required shape to fit. the front end of a side bar of an automobile frame.
One form which my invention may assume is exemplified in the following description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows aplan view of a device embodying my invention.

Referring in detail to the accompanying drawings, the machine comprises a base plate 10, at one or both ends of which is a set of bending dies each comprisinga stationary jaw 11 formed with a curved outer end 12 and an indentation 13. Pivoted to the outer end is a movable jaw 14:, angular in plan and having a curved inner end 15 indented at 16 and a right angularly disposed outer end 17. A post 18, carried by a swinging plate 19 and working in a slot 20, is positioned between the said jaws and a movable wedge-shaped impression block 21 also lies between said jaws. Preferably the latter is removably mounted upon the base plate, being held in position by means of a pin 22 entering an opening 23 in said plate. a
A bar 24 of heated metal is laid in place on the base plate with its end lying between the stationary jaw 11 and the in'ipression block 21 and projecting to one side of the machine, the movable jaw 14 being thrown back, as shown, to the right in Fig. 1 and the post 18 being moved to the outer end of the slot 20. A the movable jaw 14] by means of pins 26 entering apertures 27 in the right angularly disposed end 17 of the jaw, an. thereby the movable jaiv is swung about bending the heated bar around the post 18 and forming an eye 28 therein. 1 The movable jaw should be forced tightly home and held in this position during the subsequentoperations and I provide a lever 29 with a fulcrum pin 30 to enter an aperture in the base plate and having an eccentric head 31 working against the movable jaw and capable of retaining the latter in closed position.
The outer end of the movable jaw CO" operates with a stationary block 32 which is undercut or recessed to receive the bumper bar and retain the samesecurely in position while a twisting tool having a. bifurcated end 3 1 is applied to the projecting end of the bumper bar and given a quarter turn to form'a twist 35 in said bar. Thereafter, and preferably by means of the twisting tool 33, the end of the bar is kinked or bent upwardly to allow a be placed beneath. This templet has one end resting against the block 82 and is clamped in position upon the base plate by means of a crank shaft 37 having a projection 38 to engage the forward end of the templet. In laying out the bumper bar it is marked orpunched at specified distances from the ends. These marks or apertures are used to gage the position of the bar inthe press by providing a bowed plate 39 adjustably secured to the base plate near the center thereof and having an attenuated end 40 to bumper bar or enter an apertur 41 therein. The gage plate is made of spring metal and shaped as shown to permit it to yield so that the shifting movement of the bumper bar in not be interferred with. By having said plate adjustably mounted, bumpers of different lengths may be accommodated. Both ends of the base plate may be similarly quipped to form opposite ends of the bumper and many of the tools may be transferred from one end to the other, as for instance the impression member 21, the handle 25, eccentric lever 29 and templet, 36.

In a metal working machine, a rigid forming jaw, a movable forming jaw pivoted in relation thereto and between which jaws a metal blank may be bent, an arcuately movable pin adapted to be forced toward the fixed jaw and therebetween by the swinging movement of the pivoted aw and along a path of travel substantially concentric with the axis thereof, thereby causing an eye to be formed by the metal blank at the point at which it is bent.
8. In a metal working machine, a fixed jaw having a forming face against which a metal blank is to be pressed, a movable forming jaw pivoted at one end to one end of the fixed jaw whereby said blank may be bent upon itself as the movable jaw swings toward the fixed jaw, and a wedged-shaped impression block pivotally mounted in relation to the fixed and movable aws and having a freely swinging end adapted to project between the jaws and the doubled portions of the blank whereby said portions may be held apart and caused to conform to the faces of the jaws as they are drawn together.
9. In a metal working machine, a fixed jaw having a forming face against which a metal blank is to be pressed, a movable forming jaw pivoted at one end to one end of the fixed jaw whereby said blank may be bent upon itself as the movable jaw Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the swings toward the fixed jaw, detachably pivoted means whereby the double portions of the blank may be held apart from each other and caused to conform to the faces of the two jaws as they are forced together and whereby the pressure exerted by the movable jaw will be uniformly distributed to the portion of the blank against the forming faces of both jaws.
10. In a metal working machine, a pair of forming jaws pivoted in relation to each other between which a metal blank may be bent and a freely moving impression block interposed between said jaws and pivoted in relation thereto whereby the pressure exerted to draw the jaws together will act to force the metal blank outwardly against the adjacent forming faces of the jaws.

In a metal working machine, a pair of forming jaws pivoted in relation to each other between which a metal blank may be bent, a freely moving impression block interposed between said jaws whereby the pressure exerted to draw the jaws together will act to force the metal blank outwardly against the adjacent forming faces of the jaws, and an arcuately swinging pin where. by an eye may be formed at the bend of the blank and between the jaws.

In a metal working machine, a fixed forming jaw, an arcuately moving pin adjacent one end thereof, a movable forming jaw pivoted to the same end of said fixed jaw and adapted to swing partially around the pin whereby a around the pin and a movable impression block pivotally mounted in relation to said jaws whereby the pressure upon the pivoted jaw will cause the blank to assume the contour of the forming faces of the two jaws.
