Beit known that I, RENssnLAnR H. TOLL,

a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful "Improvements-in a Combined Book Pull and Marker, of which the following is a specification. r

The presentinvention relates to articles of stationery, and more particularly to a device adapted 'to be applied to books and the like,

as a pull and marker.

An object of the present invention is to provide a lightand simply constructed device which maybe applied to books as markers therefor, and which are of such construction as to overhang the top and back of the book and be readily accessible to the fingers when the books are arranged in rows upon a shelf or the like, for the purpose of withdrawing the books.

The invention further aims at the provision of means for dislodging a book from a row of books on a shelf without grasping and tearing the binding of the book, and without disturbing the next adjacent books. The device of the present invention is adapted to admit of the removal of books on closely vertically spaced-apart shelves, and to admit of the maintaining of the backs of the books in transverse register throughout the length of the row of the same.

The above, and various other objects and advantages of this invention will be in part described, and in part understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of several of the devices of this invention applied to books, the view illustrating the operation of one of the devices for withdrawing a book from a row of the same.

Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the combined book pull and marker.

Fig. 3 is an outer end elevation of the same.

Fig. 4 is a transverse section, enlarged, taken substantially on the line H of Fig. 2, and looking toward the upper end thereof.

- :The inner end of the arm 12 is provided "witha depending blade 13, which comprises a flat portion of the strip which is twisted to lie in a plane substantially at right angles to the plane of the arm 12, and which is bent downwardly upon a transverse line into substantially parallelism with the lug 10. The blade 13 is relatively long and is adapted to extend downwardly between the leaves of the book A to a considerable extent for anchoring the device in the book, and to also serve as a marker for designating any desired place in the book.

As shown in Fig. 4, the opposite marginal edges of the blade 13 may be beveled to provide cutting edges for the purpose of servmg as a paper cutter for the separation of leaves in a book which have not been separated and for such other convenient uses for which paper cutters are adapted.

If desired, the outer face of the lug 10 may be provided with suitable indicia 14 for indexing or labeling the book, or for lending ornamentation to the device.

Normally, the device is adapted to be inserted between the pages of a book as shown in Fig. 1, with the lug 10 lying close against the back of the book A. When it is desired to withdraw the book, the finger is inserted between the lip 11 and the book, and the lug 10 is drawn outwardly sufliciently to engage the finger back of the lug. The lug is now drawn forwardly, and the arm 12 slides over the top of the back of the book, and the blade 13 catches in the book between the leaves. When the device is thus pulled forwardly, the book may be tilted as shown in Fig. 1 sufiiciently to grasp the side covers of the book for removing the same from the row without disturbing the next adjacent books. By the provision of this device, it is unnecessary to engage the fingers with the top of the book, as is the ordinary custom, and where the shelves are arranged in closely vertically spaced-apart relation, it is unnec essary to dislodge the adjacent books for the purpose of grasping the book desired. The devices may also be employed as detachable index labels or tags for separately designating the books according to various indexes or the like which may be employed;
