Application filed .lune 13, 19M, Serial Ito. 844,998. Renewed December 1, 1917. Serial No. 20%886.
To all whom it may concern ]Be it known that l[, RAY M. SJKEELS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Buflalo in the county oflErie and State of York, have made a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Wrapping or of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for wrapping or forming cigarettes and one of the principal object of the invention contemplates the provision of means for forming a cigarette of loose tobacco and an ordinary cigarette paper with a minimum consumption of time and labor and with a maximum degree of proficiency.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cigarette roller including an inner tube, an outer tube and .a forming band or strip adapted to co-act in compressing a portion of loose tobacco and rolling a cigarette paper around the tobacco for forming a cigarette.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described which will be extremely simple, durable, eflicient 1n operation and inexpensive to manufacture..
With these and other objects in view which will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures, of which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the device, the forming bandbeing removed.
Fig. 3 represents a vertical transverse sectional view of the device showing one step in the operation of rolling a cigarette.
Fig. 4 represents a view similar to Fig. 3, showing another step in the operation, and
Fig. 5 represents a view similar to Flg. 3, showing still another step in the operation.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the invention comprises an inner tube 5 formed of any desirable material, and provided with substantially heavy closed ends 6, said tube and ends being formed if, desirable from a single piece of metal the tube being provided on one side with a longitudinal slot 7 running the entire length of the which is of tube, said slot terminating atits ends at the end walls of the tube and being bounded at its ed es by the parallel rounded edges 8 form by the slot.
An outer tube 9 is provided and surrounds the inner tube, said inner tube being rotatable relatively to the outer tube and the outer tube is provided with a slot or opening 10 corresponding in width and length to the slot in the'inner tube and said outer tube at its ends projects slightly beyond the end walls 6 of the inner tube and is housed at each end within an annular groove 11 formed in the inner face of buttons 12, which buttons are secured to the end walls 6 of the inner tube by any suitable means, said means in the present embodiment including studs 13 projecting centrally from the end walls 6 through central openings in the buttons 12, said buttons being keyed as at 14: to the studs, whereby, as the buttons are turnedthe inner tube Wlll be rotated relatively to the outer tube.
A forming band or strip 15 is provided a width equal to the length of the slots in the tubes, and substantially equal in width to the length of the ordinary cigarette paper, said forming band being composed of paper, parchment, silk, rubber, or any other suitable fabric.
The operation of the device may be briefly described as follows:
The device may be held in the center in a horizontal position between the thumb and first two fingers of the left hand and the inner tube turned by means of the right hand end button so as to bring the slots in the inner and outer tube into alinement. When in this position, the forming band is placed in the opening in the position indicated in Fig. 3 so that its short end 19 is disposed toward, and its long end away from, the operator, and tobacco is then oured into the inner tube upon the forming and level with the edges of the inner tube and is packed down with the first two fingers of the right and left hand of the operator, and a cigarette paper indicated at 17 is then placed with one edge touching the forming band adjacent the rear edge paper lying substantially fiat toward the operator.
The outer tube being then held firmly, the
inner tube is turned toward or away fromthe operator into the position shown in Fig. t to leave a slight opening 18 extending longitudinally of the device through which opening the two ends of the forming band extend and the edge portion of the paper extends, and the tubes in this position are held firmly in one hand while the end of the forming band nearest the operator indicated at 19 is pulled toward the operator, thus compressing the tobacco within the chamber and pulling the paper around the same in the manner indicated in Fig. 5. This operation is continued until turned to again bring the slots into alinement and the finished cigarette may be removed from the device.
' One of the important advantages of this device is that-a piece of tobacco leaf may be used in forming the cigarette, in place of the ordinary paper, so that an all tobacco cigarette may be produced.
Although I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I may desire tube, buttons suitably secured tow the end 'walls of the inner tube, whereby the latter may be rotated relatively to the outer tube, the ends of said outer tube projecting beyond the ends of the inner tube, and being housed in annular channels formed in the inner faces of said buttons, and a forming band composed of suitable material and adapted to co-act with the forming device in compressing a portion of tobacco and rolling a paper around the same within the inner tube, substantially as described.
2 A device of the class described comprising an inner tube, an outer tube, saidinner tube being rotatable relatively to the outer tube, said inner and outer tubes each pro vided along one side with a longitudinally extending opening, the edges of the openings being rounded, buttons secured to the inner tube at its ends,,said buttons at their edges overhanging the outer tube, said outer tube extending at its ends beyond the inner tube, said buttons provided with grooves into which the ends of the outer tube extend, and a forming band of a width substantially equalto the length of the openings in the inner and outer tubes, and adapted to co-act with said tubes in forming a cigarette, substantially as described.
3. The herein described cigarette former comprising an outer tube having a longitudinally extending slot in one. side thereof, an inner tube positioned for rotation within the outer tube and provided with a slot adapted to be brought into and moved out of registration with the slot in the outer tube, buttons carried at the ends of the inner tube and providing portions overhanging the ends of the outer tube journaling the latter, and a forming band adapted to coact with the tubes in forming a cigarette, substantially as described.
