To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MILLIE M. DEIBEL, a citizen of the United States, andresident of Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Match Safes, i Vind-ShieIds, and Strikers, of which the following is aspecification.

The present invention relates to match boxes, and more particularly to the type provided with means for facilitating the lighting of a cigar or cigarette.

An object of the present invention is to provide a match box embodying in its structure a compartment for the re'ception of the end of the cigar or cigarette to be lighted, and to receive the head end of a match and provide means within the compartment for igniting the match; the casing or body of the device being so formed as to provide compartments within which matches may be conveniently carried in position with their heads out of contact with the walls of the lighting compartment.

The invention also aims to provide an improved structure comprising relatively few parts which may be easily assembled and which form a strong and durable holder and light protector.

The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will be in part described and in part understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings where- 1n tion taken through a match box constructed according to a the present invention, and showing the same in use with the end of a cigar in the lighting compartment and a burning match in the compartment applied to the cigar.

Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the match box, taken edgewise through the same and showing the large opening leading to the lighting compartment through which the cigar may be projected.

Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the match box of this invention, showing the side thereof Figure 1 is a longitudinal transverse sec through which the match to be struck may be projected.

Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken through the lower end of the match box, showing the arrangement of the partition with its marginal edges seated in the grooves in the casing.

Referring to this drawing the device comprises a casing made up of a pair of side walls 10 and 11 joined by edge walls 12 forming a substantially rectangular body open at opposite ends. The body is preferably constructed of sheet metal in any suitable manner for facilitating assembly of the parts. The casing or body is provided therein with a substantially inverted V- shaped partition 13 formed of a strip of sheet metal having its lower diverging ends offset outwardly from each other to form tongues 14 adapted to lie fiat against the inner faces of the edge walls 12.

The sides 10 and 11 are provided with outwardly pressed beads 15 which not only reinforce and brace the casing, but which form downwardly diverging grooves in the inner faces of the side walls 10 and 11 in which are seated the lateral edge portions of the strip or partition 13. The beads 15 follow the shape of the free ends of the partition 13 to firmly hold the latter in the casing and seal the partition therein.

The upper ends, of the beads 15 merge into a circumscribing head 16 pressed outwardly from the casing near its upper end, and also merge. into a second annular outstanding bead 17 near the lower end of the casing. The upper and lower ends of the casing are preferably ofiset inwardly to form flanges 18 adapted to receive thereover' caps 19 and 20 which close the inner and outer compartments respectively located at opposite sides of thepartition 18. The caps may be hinged upon transverse pins 21 and are adapted to yieldingly bind over the flanges 18 for frictherein against the outer sides of the partition 13 matches A with the heads thereof projecting above the partition 13 and into the cap 19. The diverging walls of the partition provide means for holding the matches in stepped relation so that the heads thereof may be individually grasped by the fingers when the cap 19 is raised: The heads are also thus supported above the partition 13. r

The inner or lower compartment is provided with a cigar receiving opening 2-2 formed in one side wall of the casing, the wall 10 having the opening therethrough in the present instance. The end of the cigar B to be lighted is projected through this opening 2 2 into the inner compartment. The said wall 10 is provided with a roughened surface 23 located below the opening 22 and adapted to receive thereagainst the head of one of the matches A which may be projected through a match receiving opening 2%. formed in the opposite side wall 11 of the casing. The opening 24 is located below the transverse plane of the opening 22 and is of sufficient size to freely receive the match A therethrough and admit the manipulation of the match for moving the head thereof againstthe roughened surface 23.

Access may be gained to the lighting compartment for cleansing and facilitating the removal of accumulations therefrom; The device requires no adjustment of the parts to adapt it for use as a wind shield or protector for the burning match while igniting the cigar.

The use of the device is apparent, for when it is desired to light the cigar B, it is only necessary to swing the cap open, with draw a match, close the cap, project the end of the cigar B intothe lighting compartment through the opening 22, and extend the match into the lighting compartment below the end of the cigar through the opening 24, the match being rocked in the opening 2% with the head of the match bearing against the igniting surface 23. The match is thus lighted, and the flame rises against the end of the cigar, lighting the same. The openings 22 and 24 admit sufiicient air to promote combustion of the match A and at the same time exclude wind from the compartment which would otherwise blow the match out.

The device is relatively small and compact, and is of approximately of the size of the ordinary match box in use, presents a strong and durable structure and. requires no further adjustment of its parts than the opening and closing of the cap 19 to withdraw the match. The caps 19 and 20 afford top and bottom finger holds by means of which the device may be easily held in position as shown in Fig. 1. By placing the means? casing and the match receiving opening 2st in the other side of the casing the latter may;

be held between the forefinger and the thumb of either hand and the match A readily held inthe other hand and manipulated irrespective of which hand supports the casing.

, It is of course understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically formed device without departing from the spirit of this invention, the changes and modifications being restricted onlyby the scope of the following claims.

What is claimed is: V

l. A combined match safe and windshield comprisin a casing open at opposite ends, a ll-shaped partition arranged transversely and longitudinally in the casing forming inner and outer compartments opening through the opposite ends of the casing, caps closing the opposite ends of the casing and the respective compartments and adapted to house a plurality of matches in one of the compartments, said casing having in one side a relatively large opening through which an end of a cigar may be projected into the other compartment, the casing having a relatively small opening in its opposite side through which a match may be projected into said second compartment, and means within the second compartment for igniting the match.

2. A combined match safe and windshield comprising, a sheet metal casing substantially rectangular in cross section and open at opposite ends, the opposite lateral walls of the casing having outwardly pressed beads extending longitudinally in the walls, a partition strip arranged in the casing with its lateral edges seated in said beads to hold the partition longitudinally in the casing and divide the same into pair of independent compartments, said partition extending obliquely to the longitudinal axis of the casing to extend said compartments longitudinally of the casing and to open the compartments each through an end of the casing, caps on the oppositeends of the casing for independently closing the compartments, said casing having cigar and match receiv ing openings leading to one compartment for admitting lighting of the cigar therein.

A combined match safe and windshield comprising, an elongated casing provided with registering outwardly pressed beads in its opposite walls diverging from end to end of the casing, a returned partition strip seated at its oppositeedges in said beads and dividing the casing into inner and outer longitudinal compartments opening through the respective ends of the casing, caps on the opposite ends of the casing for independently closing the compartments, one side of the casing having an enlarged opening leading to the inner compartment and the other side of the casing having a relatively small opening, the large opening admitting the introduction of the end of a cigar into said inner compartment through one side of the casing and the smaller opening admitting the introduction of a match 10 arranged below the transverse plane of the 15 larger opening.
