To all whom it may concern Be it known thatwe, MILES J. LARKIN and FRANK J. LITEL, citizens of the United States. residing at Tekamah, in the county of Burt and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gates, of which the following is a specification. p
This invention relates to an improved end gate and the principal object ofthe invention is to provide an end gate which may be varied in height and certain sections removed according to the height of end gate desired, as sections are added or removed from the wagon body.
Another object of the invention is to provide impr ved means for releasably connecting the sections of the end gate and to provide improved means for releasably holding the end gate in a raised position and also for releasably supporting the end gate when lowered and for releasably holding the end gate in a raised position.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this end gate that it may be provided with an improved lower door or closure, the handles of which may serve to re leasably hold the door in a closed position.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view showing the end gate in elevation in a raised position with one set of brackets shown in section.
Fig. 2 is a view showing the end gate and a portion of the wagon body in side elevation.
The wagon body is provided with the upper sections 11 and 12 which are positioned in superposed relation and releasably connected and held against longitudinal movement by means of the depending arms or bars 13 which lit into the sockets 1%t. It will thus be seen that when desired either one or both of the upper sections may be put in place thus varying the height of the wagon body.
The end gate 15 is provided with side walls 16 which fit within the body portion of the wagon body against the side walls 17 thereof and are provided with notches 18 through which a bolt 19 may pass when the end gate is swung upwardly to the closed position. These side walls 16 extend beyond the ends of the side walls 17 ot the wagon body and are provided with openings so that the end fingers or pins 20 of the handles 21 may pass through these openings and thus serve to releasably hold the door 22 in a closed position when swung downwardly as well as serving as handles for permitting this door to be easily swung upwardly. This door is hingedly mounted by means of the hinges 23 and it will thus be seen that the door can be swung open when it is desired to permit a small quantity of the contents of the wagon to pass without too much of the contents passing out at one time.
The upper sections 21- and 25 of this end gate are positioned in superposed relation and are provided with the sockets 26 positioned as shown in Fig. l and provided withpins 27 so that the pins of the upper section may fit into the sockets of the intermediate section 25 and the pins of the intermediate 1 section may fit into the sockets -28 of the endgate 15. Therefore when these'upper sect ons 2- and 25 are put in place the pins will prevent them from moving rearwardly but at the same time will permit them to be easily and quickly removed when desired. These upper sections 2% and 25 are also provided with side walls 29 and 30 which arepositioned in superposed relation to the side walls 16 of the end gate. The side walls of the upper sections and the side walls of the end gate are releasably connected by cam latches 31 which are rotatably mounted upon the side walls of the section 25 and end gate and engage hooked cleats 32 carried by the side walls of the sections 24 and 25 and it will be seen that when the cams are turned to the position shown in Fig. 2 they will tightly secure the upper sections of the end gate and prevent them from becoming separated. Openings 33 are provided so that the threaded stems 3 of the fasteners 35 may pass through registering openings in the upper sections 11 and 12 and walls 29 and 30 and thus assist in holding the sections of the end gate in place and prevent rearward movement of the end gate. Cleats 36 are provided to engage the outer faces of the upper sections 11 and 12 of the wagon body when the end gate is raised thus bracing the upper sections of the wagon body and preventing them from bulging outwardly under pressure of a load in the wagon.
When this wagon is in use, it can be used with the upper sections of the wagon body and end gate removed or one or both of the upper sections can be put in place. The
intermediate section carries a bracing yoke 37 which has its ends connected with the supporting arms 38 carried by the intermediate body section 12 and this yoke serves to support the end gate when lowered as shown in Fig. 2 thus permitting the end gate to be used as a shoveling board. As previously explained it it is desired to permit a small quantity of the material in the wagon to flow out and then check the flow, the door 22 can be raised and after the desired amount has passed out of the wagon body, the door can be again closed. It will thus be seen that there has been proi'ided a wagon body which can be adjusted for height and an end gate which can be correspondingly adjusted.
hat is claimed is A wagon body including removable upper sections, an end gate including removable upper sections, plates secured to the outer faces oi the sections of the end gate and provided with vertically extending sockets, depending pins extending from the lower ends of the sockets and fitting into the sockets of the adjoining sections of the end gate, a yoke carried by one of the sections of the end gate and held in place by the sockets carried thereby, and supporting arms pivotally connected with said Wagon body and pivotally connected with the end portions of said yoke for supporting the end gate in an open position.
