-mvENTon ATTORNEY FFILLIAM B. ROSS, OF EL MODENO, CALFGRNIA.
'WERE STRETCHNG AND TWIS'N-G TOOL..
'To all v107mm t may concern:
Be it known that l, lViLLiAM B. Ross, a citizen of lthe lnited States, residing at El Modeno, in the countyjof Orange and State of California, have invented certain new and useful improvements in vWire Stretching and Twisting Tools, ot which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to.coinbiiied pliers land Wire twisters.
The object of the invention to provide pair ot `pliers equipped with means for twisting and securing Wire loops around vthe ends ot' hose or other places where similar wire .tastenings would be required and which does not iii-any way interfere Wit-h the use of the pliers in performing their usualfunctions.
@Vith the foregoing and other objects in dew, which will ,appearlas the description proceeds, the invention resides in the coniloinatioii and arrangement oir' parts and in the `details of construction hereinafter de lscribed and claimed, it being understood jaws shown open ready for tightening the Wire loop which is engaged therewith, and
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the pliers in closed position and with the Wire removed.
in the embodiment illustrated, the iniplenient v constituting this invention c oni-y prises a pair of pliers having the usual Jaws l and 2 pivoted together upon a ulcrum bolt 3 after the manner of ordinary pliers and having lever handles l and 2. The free ends of both jaws l and 2 are formed with flat faces at het-Ween which any object-v to be gripped may be held. The flat face 4 of jaw 2 has a groove 5 extending longitudinally from its outer end inward and communicating With abore 6 which extends transversely through said j aw end and connects said groove 5v with another groove 7 arranged around the`curvedouter edge of jaw 2 and which is designed to receive the Wire to be tightened'and twisted. The Wire for this purpose is here shown in the form of a loop L which may he Wrapped around Specification of Letters ratent. Patent-.Qd Biay 14, 1918.;

the end of a hose, a bundle of metal rods or any object to be secured thereby and has one end thereo1 laid in the groove 7 and extended around the' end of jaw 2, being placed inthe groove 5 formed. in' the flat face fl thereof andv with its terminal eX- teiided through the transversebore G as 'is slioivn clearly iii Fig. l and by means o which said wire end is securely held. The
l'other end of this Wire extendsrearwardlyylv through groove "7 and has the terminal 'thereof threaded throughan apertured lug Scarried by thel lever handle l ofjaw'l and which is preferably cast inte-gral therewith as is shown clearly in Fig. l. lt will thus be seen that these ends of the Wire will be securely held so that when the handle levers i" and 2 are compressed toward each other, a pulling action will be exerted on' the loop L thereby tightening the loop around the object to be secured and after the desired tightness has been obtained, the turning of the pliers will voperate to twist the ends of the ivi-re'aiid thereby'securely tie them.l The terminalsof the Wire mayl then be disengaged from'the pliers and said pliers used to cut oit these ends close to the doop, Wire cutters shown at 10 being provided' for this purpose and Which are usually carried by pliers of this character.
It will thus be seen that when thev Wire has been threaded through the pliers in the mannerl above described that'the grooves 5 and 'Y will operate to prevent ittroin slipping laterally and the tightening and twisting operation may be accomplished Ywith the exertion ot a minimum ,amount of force and in a very short-time Withoutvin anyway interfering with the usual functions of the pliers, as the groove 5 formed lin the iat face 4 voi'` jaw 2 extends throughout-a portiony only of the Width of said face and therefore would not interfere With the clamping action of this jan/.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection With the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method ofl operation Will be readily 'apparent to those skilled in the art to which .the invention appertains andwhile l have `described the principle of operation of the, invention together With the device Which I now. consider to be the best embodiment thereof, l desire to. have/it understood that the device'shovvn .is inerely illustrative and iie that such changes may be made as are Within the scope of the Claimed invention.
I olaiin:--
l. A Wire tightening and twisting implement comprising a pair of lever handles pivotally connected at one end and one having a forwardly extending jaw with a bore lextending transversely therethrough from its inner face to its outer edge and adapted to receive one end of a Wire to be tightened,
an apertured lng, carried by the other han.
die and opening longitudinally`ofsaid handle to receive the other end of the Wire to be tightened whereby the movement of said handles toward each other will operate to stretch or tighten the Wire, and Wire retaining means to hold the tWo ends thereof in longitudinal alinement to provide for a direct pull being exerted on the Wire.
2. An implement of the class described Lesen-se' Comprising a pair of lever handles-pivotally connected at one end, one of said handles having a jaw with a bore extending from its innerl face through its rear edge With a Wire receiving groove in its` inner face leading from said bore to the outer end of said jaw, said jaw having another groove arranged around its outer edge 'and communieating with said first mentioned groove and extending yrearwardly beyond said bore to form Wire retaining means to prevent its lateral displacement, and an apertured lug carried by the other handle.
v ln testimony whereof I aiixmy signature in presence of tivo Witnesses.
