Description

G. W. EDWARDS.
CAN OPENER.
APPUCATION mm SEPT- 12. 1916.
15265,?601. Patented May 14, 1918.
INVENTOR Specification of Zetters Patent.
Patented May re, 1918.
Application filed September 12, 1918., Serial No. 119,686.
generally to nnprovements in can openers.
The invention has more especial reference to a device for punching a vent opening and a liquid dispensing opening in the top of a can, such 'as one containing condensed milk, whereby the contents of the can may be more easily and conveniently dispensed.
More particularly, the present invention has reference to a device of the character mentioned formed from a single strip of material bent upon itself to provide a base and an arm, a punching element depending from the arm being adapted toprovide a hole in the top of a can when the arm is depressed toward the base.
it has been the custom heretofore when opening cans of evaporated milk, syrup, etc, to employ a knife or other article that happens to be nearby for punching holes in the can but such articles are very unsatisfactory for this purpose.
Among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the character mentioned with a view to compactness, the, number of parts of which are few, the construction simple, ithegcost of production low, and the eficiency Gther improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of parts will be appreciated from the detail description helow. which is to he read in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and wherein l disclose a preferred embodiment of the invention for the purpose of illustration.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which lFi re 1 is a side elevation of my invention in position on top of a can.
Fig. 2 is a perspective of the invention.
fiimilar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now more particularly to the portions of hot enlarged so that the base will eilectively arm, the punching accompanying drawin I provide my novel can opener or device or punching holes in the tops of cans, said device being formed from a single strip of resilient metal bent upon itself to provide a base and an arm 2 the latter being yieldable with respect to the base. As is apparent in Fig. 1 of the drawin the base rests on the top of a can 3, a guide 4 being struck out from the base adjacent the outer end to consequently provide an opening 5, the said guide serving to properly position the base on the can.
Now, in order to punch a vent opening and a dispensing opening in the top of the can I have struck out a spur shaped punching element 6 from the arm 2 adjacent the outer" end thereof, said punching element depending from the arm and being arranged so as to pass through the opening 5 when the arm 2 is deplressed. Desirably the outer the lease and the arm are support the device and so that the arm will be wide enough as to be readily engaged by the thumb of the user.
The mode of operation of the invention may he reviewed as follows:
Assuming that the device is in the posi-&
tion shown in Fig. 1, the guide 4i serves to properly position the same and by placing the thumb on the arm and depressing the element 6 will he forced through the opening and also through the top of the ca when pressure is removed from the arm, because of its resiliency it will resume its former position whereupon the devicecan he moved and adjusted in another position and operated in a similar manner to provide the other opening in the top of the can.
While I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, I am aware that many modifications may be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claim. Therefore, i do not wish to he limited to all the details shown, hut
